Should I get laptop or desktop?

Hey everyone. I have a question. I'm going to upgrade my computer and I don't know if I should go laptop or desktop. I thinking about buying the Sager 9750. It has the amd 64x2 and 7800 nvidia, and if I got the 7200rpm hard drive with 2 gigs of ram, would it run as fast as a desktop with similar specs? Has anyone done a laptop/desktop benchmark comparison between similar spec machine? Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

A desktop is going to perform a little better than a laptop with the same hardware. The reason for this is the lower latencies, and wider busses in a desktop system. However the difference is not too much, and what you give up in power you get in portability. I wouldn't give up my laptop for the same desktop system. I am a laptop guy for life.

If you are asking if you need a laptop or desktop, then you probably should save a ton of money and get the desktop.

The only purpose of these laptops is to add portability to a desktop machine. And you pay dearly for it.

If you don't need this portability, then the desktop is the no brainer.

However, if you do need portability, then it becomes sticky. Do you want a phatty desktop and a more mobile laptop?

One phatty laptop machine that is all in one?

You really have to weigh if you need the portability or not.

^ yeah if you're asking if you should .... go with the desktop, you can get alot of better stuff for 3.5 grand in a desktop then in a laptop. Unles you're a serious "Lanner" go with the desktop

Yes this is a very fast laptop but keep in mind it's not going to be very portable and will cost a lot of money. It's a heavy beast that will generate a great deal of heat and noise while offering poor battery life. It may better be described as a portable desktop.

For that price you could buy both a desktop and a laptop of a more midrange performance and have the best of both worlds. Look at my signature. Both my systems cost less than this Sager 9750 you are describing.

If you are a builder you can save a ton of money and build a very nice mid to high end desktop for under $1500 with a monitor.

Just something to consider.

ever since i got the 9860 i do my gaming in my office room, my living room, and at work....and at my parent's house when i visit.

the portability factor blows away the slight performance differences between a desktop and a laptop and this is what you pay for.

wireless internet and laptops go hand in hand.

Thanks for all the replies. Portability is definitly a plus. I'm also thinking I can do my work on the laptop. The thing is, I do alot of photoshop and sometimes I work on files in the 2 to 3 gig size. My desktop right now is an amd64 x2 4200, radeon 850 xt video card, 2gig of ram, and it runs pretty good. I'm thinking that a sager amdfx 60 with nvidia 7800gtx plus 2 gigs of ram should run photoshop better than my desktop. Anymore more thoughts would help.

You already have an impressive desktop. Get a great laptop and you will have the portability. You can even use both of them side by side with this little program http://synergy2.sourceforge.net/
And if you add an external monitor to your laptop you'll have THREE screens!!! You'll never go back to one screen hehee (except when you are travelling and you can use the laptop).

Another point to consider is, your big-ass laptop may be cool, fast, and screaming, but it's also more fragile, expensive to repair, and more difficult to upgrade. So maybe you want to work on your desktop more often when you are at home, and save the laptop for the times when you are away... it all depends on your usage patterns and the depth of your pockets.

LOL! Yeah that would certainly be a photoshop screamer. But do you really need that much power? I think a nice fast Intel Core Duo machine with a mid range graphics card would do almost as well and offer better battery life and portability. You did mention that portability is a plus. If you really want gaming power I believe Sager is coming out with a variation of the 5720 with a Core Duo and the 7800GTX. It would be cheaper, lighter, quieter, and cooler than the behemoth 9000 series machines.

Have you considered Apple? Apple is now offering the ability to multi-boot with OSX and WindowsXP on their new Core Duo machines. Since you said you are a heavy photoshop user this may be a new consideration. Those new Intel Macs are pretty nice!

you say that you do alot of work with photoshop....if you do go with the 9750, you may want to go with the WSXGA screen. I got the WUXGA screen and do love the resolution, but there has been some color issuses with this resolution. My 9860 has the WSXGA screen and the color is great and the resolution is fine. On my 9750, I had to tone down the blues to get good color representation. It's not perfect, but it's good enough for what I do.

My wsxga screen had worse color issues. On the 4750 wsxga it was IMPOSSIBLE to get grays.

Anyway, portability for me is critical because I like being able to take my main work machine home and vice versa. This machine is NOT good for cars, cafes, class, etc. It's just too bulky.

Lol, yeah it is a bit hefty for taking notes in class.
Before it blew up my alienware 7700m (same size) got a lot of
funny looks when I pulled it out to take notes.
But, I would deffinitely reccomend the 9750. I am actually probably going to order mine tomorrow.
It will serve mostly as my fiance's work/gaming computer, and will mostly be in an office or at home.
I will continue to use my 5720 as the quasi-mobile machine that it is ^_^
Now we just have to come up with a nice paint scheme for smooth-creations to do with it!
