Acer Aspire 5672 Review

aight i finally got my acer 5670
i started ordering from Newegg.com but i had so many problems with my credit card that i ended up ordering from ncix.com. i now love them , i can even pay through my online banking so :P the only thing i can b!tch about is the fact that when i put the lappy on a table it didnt sit right, so i turn it over. and behold , the main cover was popped out. extremely weird. probably when they installed the ram they didnt put it back together right.
bad packaging

popped up cover

sooo nice. i love the crystalbrite (aka glossy) screen. here its playing milkdrop on winamp

that annoying cover on the card reader (ps no compactflash)

the amazing viewing angles

the only bad angle is from top (prolly because of cristal orientation)

and here the shortcut buttons (programmable) mine are setup for openoffice/winamp/firefox/steam

the windows media player buttons (im trying to get them to work for winamp. can any1 help?)

and finally the whoe lappy lovely just lovely

i power it up. this machine boots up soo fast ( compared to my oldass desktop lol)
skip throught the whole windows settings part :P
sofar i havent run any tests, only installed firefox and codecs and openoffice. i cant do too much for now cause i got finals these two weeks.

for now all i can say is:
pros :
- beautifull, just beautifull
- build is good.
- great battery life : 3-3.5 hours
- not too heavy
- the webcam is very nice under good lighting. when you turn the option for low lighting the cam is extremely slow so i turned it off (default on)
- cs:s with full eyecandy runs great
- i love the screen ooo so glossy (this might be a con for some pple as it reflects a hell of a lot)
- multitasking on this baby is a cinch. i run mildrop (winamp vis) on desktop mode, while dlding, transferring large folders, and burning a cd. without a pb

cons
- the wifi and bluetooth buttons on the front are oddly loose but work
- the little cover on the card reader is so freaking anoying. you pulll it out and it hangs by a little rubber end, so ill prolly just rip it out
- even when not playing the right side gets pretty hot.
- the touchpad acts up on its own and rightclicks when it freaking wants to. im gonna have to see that (anyine else have this problem?) it also oddly heat up as the cpud and northbridge are right underneath
- the keyboard flexes a hell of a lot. but heard many pple say this
- THIS THING GETS HOOOT!!!! i wouldnt recommend using it on your lap for too long
- acer programs
- comes with 2 partitions in......FAT32 !!!!!
- blowhole on the right side makes your hand sweat when using a mouse
- sofar havent been able to configure the media keys for winamp.

im sorry bout this poor review but im no laptop expert (desktop forever before this beauty)
i also forgot i dont have a winxp cd anymore and this didnt come with one, so ima ask a friend to mail me one. and then ill format the freaking FAT32 freaking two partition drive

***UPDATE***

Well, I've had this acer for almost 18 months now.
My main change to the ratings was a lowering of the build quality. The carcass of the beast squeaks (especially the sides) when lifting or moving the whole or closing the screen. Worst of all, I have a huge red racing stripe down the screen starting right under the webcam (I'lll take a picture when I get my camera back). My warranty ran out so I am going to try to fix it myself.

Overall I'm pretty let down by the overall life of the laptop. It ages badly.

This is extremely strange, my cover was popped up a little when my 5672 arrived, I figured it was due to shipping, although I wouldnt like to knock it that hard! LOL

yes the touchpad does get warm, thats because it is sat immediately above the Northbridge and the CPU both of which are cooled from underneath, (will someone tell heat to go that way for a change ? LOL )
so you have all the heat generated by the dual core and the northbridge under your touchpad and right handrest.

the right clicking is a little concerning, if course the touchpad recognises even the slightest tap as a click, which is a nightmare if you ever try to play an fps on there best to plug in a mouse for gaming.

another user on these forums has bought a lapcool 2 and the machine runs much cooler using that.

good luck and enjoy

so far havent done much more. just reinstalled realtek drivers. im waiting for the winxp cd to get here to rredo everything especially the crappy partitionning.
another issue im having is with the middle scroll thingy. it wont work for scrolling up and down. i programmed the side to side to go back/forward in internet and that works just fine. did you get yours to work for scrolling in firefox?

holly toasted bread batman!!!!!!!
i just noticed something horribly wrong. on the right side of the screen the frame is stickking out by 2-3 mm !!!!!! and theres a piece of plastick between the frame and the lcd. freaking manufacturing errors. im on hold with acer right now to tell them this and that the lappy came with the bottom cover popped up and no windows cd.
wow sounds like someone didnt assemble the machine very well, must have been a job finished @ 5.25 pm eh?
good luck getting it sorted out

acer support seem really nice about fixing problems here in the uk, just remember dont be angry with them on the phone , the support guy didnt put your machine together, but they are more willing to be helpful, with a cheery voice from your end.

rofl for sure. i called them and they said just send it back. ill do it as soon as my exams are over cause i need it to type papers and stuff. oh and heres a picture of the gap between the screen (bezel is how you say it in english- im french lol) and the frame. thats as good quality i could get from that close up

thanx BOFH for being the only one to reply. this is my first review
i updated the review and added pics. my roomate lent me her nikon so their much better than the first ones.

I'm happy you liked yours. I was lucky, as I received mine in a perfect state (but then again, I purchased mine from Newegg). I really hate that double-tapping on the trackpad, so I usually turn that off, lower sensitivity, and usually use a mouse. My only gripe is that when I use my Logitech mouse, the pointer sometimes goes haywire and moves to the opposite side of the screen! I thought maybe some insect or something fell and touched the touchpad but nothing. Otherwise, I love my Acer 5672. Nice review, motoso!

glad to hear your machine is going to be sorted
that gap is terrible
these things happen though, basically because humans interact with it somewhere in production LOL

Download the latest Synaptics driver... That should resolve the Firefox issue.

Also, NCIX is my Home..i live like right beside them on the island..reason packaging is bad prolly cuz they arent use to US (there CanadaaBuilt) and thats never happened too me tho.

man im getting the 5672 too! except im getting the stacked version lol 2GB,XP-Pro,X1400 though and 120GB Space...

btw how well is the built in camera? and can it twist n such..and can u take a few pics with it? thank you.
nice pics/review too
yep the latest synaptics driver should sort the firefox issue as wynand32 says
the camera is ok, you have to turn off low light compensation for higher frame rates
you can flip it under so that it points outwards, quite good for looking when youre not looking LOL
I would like it to be able to see behind me though

fun camera 1.3megapixels on a webcam is a good resolution

lol i live in montreal so yeah it didnt ship to the US. the bad thing about packaging is that they just put the acer box into a larger box with nothing in between. they shoulda put that foamy stuff in, or no extra box at all. but otherwise i was extremely satisfied with ncix. they got great selection, customer service is good, and the best is that there are many options for paying especially for canadians through internet banking. i like this cause i got no credit card so its anoying getting stuff on internet.
as for the camera its actually really good under good light. you have to take the low light booster as bofh said cause that makes it slow. it turns down only but a full 225 degrees.
here is a pic with a bunch of items so you can see the detail. this is under good daylight in 640x480 res:
nice, btw..thats what they did with mine..put Bubble Packaging over my Desktop Parts..also.. did u PRICMATCH it? its right now for 1,780$, and i pricedmatched to 1,699$ CDN... they rock with pricematching, and delivery.

by the way, how good is the X1400?
Thread Starter
the x1400 is great. runs W3 and cs source with full eyecandy perfectly. havent ried FEAR on it yet but i hear it runs well with decent settings. its great decoding video too.

This lappy is really starting to piss me off tho. besides the pb with the screen and the battery. i had another pb which i thought was minor. the piece of plastic between the keyboard and the touchpad was slightly curved upward. i didnt care much for that untill today. after a while of gaming the touchpad got really hot (as it does) but then i noticed the plastic getting more and more curved. when i stopped playing. the piece of plastic was actually detached from the touchpad on the upper right part. now when i push the top right corner of the touchpad it actually goes in by 2 milimeters or so, and i can stick my nail between the plastic and the touchpad. I am really strting to annoyed at acer for sending me an extremely badly built machine. im gonna send it back on friday cause i need it for my exams. well see how it goes. they should replace the whole thing cause thats just not right (4 manufacturing errors on one machine )
im not bashing on acer cause this is my first product from them. but this has me doubting a lot. hopefully their customer support is good enough to counterpart all these problems.
anyway thats the current situation for me. im also trying to resolve problems like windows getting hung every once in a while, and the touchpad doing whatever it freaking wants.
peace.
yay cs: source now im gonna <3 it.
Anyway, u use the touchpad for gaming n such.wow, as soon as i buy it im hooking up my 5$ logitech mouse onto it
good luck, on returning it.. I think NCIX has free RMA Shipping if ur a VIP (i am!) if not its cheap, and acer always recieves and sends borked laptops.

are you insane??? lol touchpad for cs source is like trying to play FEAR if youre blind lol. nah i hooked up my logitech mouse asap.
i was just saying that under normal windows usage the touchpad acts up and rightclicks whenever it freaking wants
as for sending back. i have to send it back to Acer panam.
Ok.lol
anyway, how is the speakers on the front? the two of them..
and is there any subwoofer on bottom or any other speakers?
Thread Starter
hmm.
speakers are, well, laptop speakers. theyre alright. no bass at all tho which bums me out. im no expert on laptops, but ive heard better on my friends speakers. they dont have the subwoofer on the bottom.
i wasnt too worried about sound when looking for a laptop cause i use my headphones a lot (sexy sennhiser hd570). but when i tested with these headphones, the sound was really low on them, even on max volume. the only way to get it louder is in the realtek pannel where you can up the decibels (also doable in winamp). but this messes with the sound.
on smaller earphones the sound gets decently loud.
i guess you need usb sound for the good heaphones
