any recommendations to go with my laptop ?

any suggestions from the nikon brand?

also, how much more does a 8mp compared to a 5mp take in terms memory usage per photo?

mp means practically nothing

my recommendation is always to go with something from the canon sd series

Vibration Reduction minimizes the effects of camera shake, offering equivalent shutter speeds of up to 3 stops faster for more flexibility with handheld shooting

This feature is in only 1 other camera in their store I'm sure.
It's a very important feature.
The more megapixels. The more detail.

"mp means practically nothing"

Don't know what you mean by mp means a lot.
What is the file size in megabytes of a 5mp pic versus an 8mp, using the standard picture size?

Given the same rate of compression, about 62.5% smaller, I'd guess. Depends on the camera.

Well I have a 7MP Canon A620, and love the hell out of it... it all depends on what you want your camera to do... For me, I wanted something I could grow into (timed exposures, aperature, colors, etc), didn't mind that it was a bit bulky in the pocket, and took great pictures. I also wanted as many MP as possible for if I need to do full page posters at hi-res. a 7MP super fine picture is usually about 3.5mb... As opposed to a 3 MP super fine taking about 1MB... I would STRONGLY STRONGLY STRONGLY suggest going to www.imaging-resource.com and reading the reviews/recommendations based on what you will use it for...

panasonic makes good cameras. any of their FZ model cameras would be nice. they get their lenses for the FZ models from the german company leica; their lenses are top notch and they have a long history in the industry.

I like Canon and Minolta (Konica) digital cameras. What type of camera do you want? I HATE compact cameras so I couldn't recommend one of those. Canon Digital Rebel is damn nice if you want SLR-ish.

hey bazzel. have u taken out any 4x6 prints with the a620. how r they compared to other dig. cameras u have. the pic quality looks top notch so far but i havent had any prints made out yet. i think at this point, if i had a choice id prob. return it & go for a sd550 cause this thing is flippin huge. the advanced manual is also a little unclear when explaning the different settings u can mess arnd with.

yeah I've had some prints made and they are real nice... actually had a full page printed (what, 8x12?) and it looked spectacular... I dunno, I actually got an SD400 (same size as SD550) and returned it because the thing was too flippin small... I like something with a little more bulk, but it still fits in my pockets fine, so what if it sticks out a bit, at least it doesn't feel like its going to snap in half or fall out at any moment... and the flip screen so it doesn't scratch/break... plus there is so much more you can do with the A620 its wasnt even a competition... FOR ME THOUGH, I wanted more than a point and shoot, something I could grow on... if you read up on it, it really has a lot of cool little things you can do (like color replacement, giving different shooting priorities, etc)... and as far as the manual settings go, just play around... go to the manual mode (where i spend most my time) and just play around... thats all I did... I was no grand master photographer, I just read what buttons let me change what things and played around to see what everything did... change one thing, take a picture, see how it changed the picture... but then i did a little reading as well, but you dont have to... all in all I'm very happy with my A620 and its my take everywhere camera, now I'm saving up to get a 350D as well as I've started to grow as a photographer...
