8204 - A really nice laptop

A Quick review of my Acer 8204

The screen:
As people say, it’s not a top quality screen. It’s not as sharp as the one on my other laptop (Z-note 4100 SXGA), but the contrast and colours are better. I wouldn’t recommend it to people working e.g. web graphics, but then again I would never recommend a flat screen for this.
It however doesn’t have any grey lines or light leakage as other people are having problems with.

GPU:
I can’t hear any buzzing noise. In Oblivion or the Tokamak demos the only sound is the fan spinning. It is not a silent laptop when running e.g. Oblivion but that’s to be expected with the x1600, and if you use for taking notes in school the laptop doesn’t make a sound. My 3DMark05 score is 4350 with should be more than enough for running the games on the marked today.

Keyboard:
If you never used this kind of keyboard it will take some time getting use to it. Some of the keys are places rather odd (Like the “\<>”), at least in comparison to my other laptop, but the quality of the keyboard is great.

Core Duo:
What can I say: Wau!

Software:
In my experience, the Acer software is buggy. I have made a clean install with nothing but the drivers, and it runs much faster. I haven’t had a single crash since the reinstall and all the hardware function perfectly.
I have installed the Omega drivers and the realtek drivers from their own homepage. No problem there. The only problem is the Logitech drivers. Gcc will not compile unless you disable the drivers. I had some similar problems with this on my old laptop, so the laptop it selves is not the problem here.
A quick fix is to create a bat file that disable and afterwards enable the driver when developing programs.

Here is my specs and setup:
Acer 8204 build 602 with the Samsung screen.
Bios: 3312

Clean Windows XP SP2
No Acer software!
Omega 6.3 Graphics Driver
Newest Realtek HD Audio Driver
Windows Power Meter - 3+ hours on battery
All other drivers are from the acer-euro.com website.

Thanks for the review kohaar, you're just helping me reaffirm my decision to purchase the 8204!!!

Quick questions though, I'm a newb when it comes to reformating, installing new drivers, and switching the HD from FAT32 to NTFS, is it at all complicated or difficult?

I was thinking of converting partition 2 to NTFS, then delete partition 3, then using something called Partition Magic to stretch partition 2 out to the end of the drive.

If you own (or "own") a Windows XP (not the one delivered with the computer) it's really simple. Just boot the cd, start the installation. You have, during the installation, the possibility to create partitions (and format them with ntfs).

Be sure that you have the drivers ready. I'm not sure if the windows install will detect your modem or network, so you won’t be able to download them afterwards. Download the different network drivers and put them on an external harddrive, cd or usb key before install.

If you are not that experienced in installing, be sure to have your original xp (the one that comes with the computer) on a dvd, so you can easily start over if anything goes wrong.
If it’s not delivered with the computer, Acer will send you one for free.

Here is a couple of pics of the laptop in comparison to my older one (as you can see, I misuse my laptops :-) )

Sorry for the low picture quality. My camera is pretty old :-) Also, the screen is not quite as bright as on the picture. Again my camera :-)

Wow, thanks for all the tips! However, once I'm actually doing the reformatting I will probably call for your help again!

The screen on the ACER looks great IMHO, not horrible like a lot of people seem to say.

Have you had a chance to run 3dMark2006, and if so what did you get?

Also, if you don't mind the trouble, could you possibly list the drivers i'll need to get (both from the euro acer site and from other manufacturers)?
--->It would greatly assist this newbie

Yeah I'm getting my laptop in about a week. My friend is trying to sell me on the dell 6400 but it but it simply doesn't compare

Hehe. I’m not 100% sure if this is all the drivers, but after installing them all, check if some of the hardware in the computer is not detected and write me. I will try to figure out which driver you need. :-)

I haven’t had a chance to run 3DMark06, but considering my 3DMark05 score, I think you can just look at the other 8204 owners score, and mine/yours would be the same.

Omega driver: http://www.ngohq.com/home.php?page=F...&dwn_cat_id=14
RealTek (sound) driver: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dlhd-1.aspx

Acer driver: http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/ftp/ftp.html
802abg.zip
amt.zip
btw.zip
cardrdr.zip
ccd.zipchipset.zip
gsensor.zip lan.zip
modem.zipsmartcard.zip
touchpad.zip

I’ve had some work to do the yesterday, but just ask, and I will try to help you as good as I can. The Windows install will automatically format your main partition when you do the install. Your other partition can easily be formatted after the install, just by right clicking on the drive and press format. Good luck with it.

Thanks for the links and instrustions kohaar!

I've read that you can use the omega drivers or the catalyst 6.2 drivers to get your gpu running at optimal speeds. Have you tried both or just the omega one?

I haven't tried the Catalyst driver. It would however be interesting to see if it performs better.

Next time i reinstall I will try it.

kohaar, I've read somewhere about people using certain programs to help brighten the screen, so it wasn't (in their opinions) so dim. Have you used, or know of any programs like this?

I haven't used these programs, but I know that the Omega driver allows you to ajust brightnes, contrast and gamma.

If people were wondering how the game performs in games, I took a couple of screenshots from Oblivion. The game runs in 1280x768 at a steady framerate of 30, with HDR, Largest Textures, and every object set to show at a maximum distance. No shadows though. That killed it. :-)

I had to make a few ajustments in the ini file to get these graphics. One of the nicer tweaks is to enable Core Duo support for rendering e.g. trees :-)

I have to agree with you on the 8204. I was one of the lucky ones that got a decent screen and no buzzing noise in the first batch 0512 build.
I have been very happy with the performance of the laptop overall.
I got the QD screen with no grey lines or light leakage. It is not the best screen I have seen but after some adjustments to the color settings It is not bad at all. The brightness on mine was ok.

I have updated all the drivers and bios released so far and it has fixed most of the issues that I had early on. The only remaing issue that I have is the bluetooth mouse dropping out but it happens much less with the latest bluetooth drivers.
i'd love to get that BT mouse thing fixed. I have the latest driver too, and it's improved it, but Murphy seems to rule: just when you're on the phone with a customer looking something up, it craps out.

That's pretty much the only problem I have with the machine at this point.

Have you tried the mouse with other computers. A stupid question of cause :-)

I haven't tried out bluetooth since I don't have any devices to test on, so I can't say if it's a general problem
post #15 of 17
Unfortunately, I don't have any other computers with BT to compare against.
Yea I have used this mouse with other computers and it works fine. I actually have two different ones and they both have problems with the 8204 bluetooth. It is much better with the new drivers though. I hope they will get it fixed eventually in a future software update.

Yea. Lets hope it's just a software problem (sure sounds like it).
