Hey snafle I dont understand what you mean?
I think he means

Big displays (with higher resolution) need more graphics power and a dual link DVI

he predicts that the smaller mackbook (non pro) will not be able to power said display (not enough GPU power) instead apple will choose to limit that option to its "pro" line...

coulb be, I mean the ibook couldnt do it why should the mackbook.
just one more thing to consider.

Just read your post, I your not doing anything graphic intensive,(and the system can handle the res with no serious downsides) I would go with the macbook/ibook.

To use an external diplay its just one cable, just like hooking up a USB exept a diferent port. (and a cable from LCD to power)

and about wireless internet, your notebook will come with that standard, other than that you need somewhere to log on ...a router or something, or one of these cards (cant remember name) that is like a cellphone line you can hook upo to your computer and be on the internet.

(or somethin like that)

For additional programs, you might want to get iWork bundled with the machine.

And for OS X, pick up a copy of "Mac OS X: the Missing Manual" (Tiger Edition) by David Pogue.

Thanks. So I since Im wanting to get the MacBook/iBook 13" should I get a lcd for stantionary use or not? Thanks
post #26 of 81
Yeah, the apple 23" would be fine, or a dell. Dell are good, and cheap. Just make sure that if the macbook doesnt support dual DVI you dont get a dual DVI monitor. That would be a disapoitment.

Which of the following would be the most bang for the buck:

Choice 1:
13" MacBook/iBook
30" Apple Cinema HD Display
Apple Wireless Mouse
Apple Wireless Keyboard

Choice 2:
15" MacBook Pro
iCurve Stand
Apple Wireless Mouse
Apple Wireless Keyboard

I was thinking Choice one would be but Im not sure. Thanks
post #28 of 81
I'd say Choice 2. More powerful, available now, and stuff along those lines. Get it with the 23inch display, it will probably cost the same as chocie 1.

Rember, there is a chance the 30" will not work the normal macbook for the reasons above.

1) Will the 23' work with the MacBook 15" and 13"?
2) IS 15" portable enough to carry absolutley everywhere with me?
3) What are all the accessories I should get, so I dont have to get any later?
4) Just so yall know I dont have the money now but I will by July/August.
5) Any other adivce is appreciated.

Thanks

6) Which would give me the most protablility?
1) Im not sure ... I dont think anyone is... but judging from snafles the 13" should work with the 23"

2) my dad has a 14" i dont think theres any problem ....
3)IDK I would get a logitech mouse...(for right clicking) and apart from keyboard and stuff maybe an external drive, thats about it.

4)hold out as long as you can and think things through.

Thanks for the help. Now I just have one more question whats an external drive? Thanks
post #32 of 81
I consider 15" portable enough, but then I normally have a bag on my anyway so I don't know what you tihnk. Imagine a medium thickness text book.

And external drive is just that- an external hard disk. The fact that it's external allows it to be bigger than what would fit in a laptop, so they can have huge capacity. However, most require an external power adaptor so bear that in mind.

Obviously, the smallre ibook will be more portable, however for me it makes little difference.

The ibook should work with the 23", i'd be willing to bet on it, but I can't promise anything. Wait till it comes out, if it has DVI then its a definite.

Accesories... well, I'd say a nice carry case, an external mose and a big external disc. Just my thoughts though.

I cant find one for apple, do they make them? If not whats a good one to get? Thanks
post #34 of 81
Do you mean a HD, No apple dosent make them (atleast to my knowledge)
Get a maxtor or a seagate.. (only brands I can think of right now) and stick em in an external case...
Dude, google is so very much your friend for this sorta thing. Decided on a size you want. Then but, oh I don't know, "200GB external" into Froogle and see what turns up.

Blam.

Snaflr I think he means a carrying case... you seem far more apple knwoing could ya point him in the right direction?

You're asking too many questions at this point to buy a lot of external appliances. Just get a laptop for now and wait until you feel the need for expansion.

By the way, the old 15" and 17" Powerbooks could drive the 30" cinema display. Apple will state on their website which browsers the laptops can and can't support.

A 15" laptop is sufficient for your needs. Even a 12" would be.

I and many friends of mine build websites, print advertisements, video production, photography, and plenty of other production work inside the confines of a single Powerbook screen. It's a good compromise of power and portability.

The only reason I could see having a laptop/desktop combination would be for field/studio work. Bring a small laptop with you on shoots to transfer data and check your work. Then when you get to the studio, upload all of that onto a desktop to utilize fast and large drives, dual large displays, and the processor power for things like Aperture. But that means lots of $$$. And it also requires a NEED for such a setup, with a professional setting.

Oh right, cases? Well, there's a huge list, so I'll just point to the thre i've heard good things about eachtime.

http://www.pakuma.com/

Look through those sites, you should be able to find something nice.

If you want me to advise some stuff, then here's what I'd say:

MacBook Pro
An external, 200 gig or more hardrive
http://www.booqbags.com/Detail.bok?no=363 <--- that bag

and if you can afford it:
Dell 2407 or 2707 screen (soon to come, hopefully, and driveable by anything)

yes, but w/ the advent external sata enclosures the ballgame changes. assuming an expresscard gets as much access to the pci bus as an internal drive, you could very well get desktop performance out of a laptop by way of a sata expresscard and a 3.5" external sata drive/enclosure. your workstation would in fact be the monitor, keyboard, mouse, external drive, and whatever else one needs at their desktop station.

heck if apple ever takes intel up on their modular laptop initiative (making laptop parts, read:GPU, as interchangable as desktops are) down the road i'd opt for a MBP as my only computer system. mind u, i'd have to opt for the 512MB GPU (hypothetical) to allow for gaming on an external monitor.
