Looks like I only have a headphone output on my S676

How do I go about connecting my 5.1 audio system?

buy yourself a soundcard.

yeah buy yourself an external usb (creative audigy 2 nx like mine) or pcmcia (creative audigy 2 zs) soundcard. get it set up and then plug in your speakers and your ready to go

Wait a second, doesn't it already come with a 5.1 soundcard?

I know it's listed in the specs somewhere

So you're saying it doesn't come with a 5.1 card like advertised
post #7 of 17
it was never adv. with 5.1

During the P20 series 5.1 surround sound wasn't even an option for 90% of notebooks.

I'm pretty sure it was advertised with 5.1 as it was one of the reasons why I bought it....

Although, I can't find it listed on the Toshiba site, there are a ton of reviews that say it does have it

Here's one:

there is an SPDIF out, which looks like a headphone jack should be inline with your headphone and microphone jacks. that can be used for the output the tunes to a set of speakers.... use google and you will find a wealth of sites with info on SPDIF.

however the sound from that will not be as good as the sound from a proper external soundcard such as the ones i suggested.

OK, I Googled SPDIF and found a bunch of Toslink cables (I've never seen a Toslink before)

According to the specs andy posted, the S/P DIF is shared with the headphone jack....

Is there a simple cable with a headphone jack on one end and a set of 6 RCA's on the other?

Or will I have to get some kinda Toslink dongle setup?

guys... the P20 series does NOT NOT NOT have a 5.1 decoder audio card on board.... next to ZERO notebooks around that time had that type of technology (economical) for notebooks.

SPDIF can be used, but only as a signal that still needs to be decoded by some external device.

yeah i know but he was just saying he wasnt sure how to hook it up, and to that end the basic signal to be decoded can be output from the SPDIF, he still needs to get an external hardware decoder such as a home theater reciever to have 5.1 surround sound.

Yeah, I know I won't be able to just plug in 6 speakers to my laptop if that's what yer trying to say....

I have a basic home 5.1 surround system (philips) with a receiver/amp....

I just dunno how to go about hooking it up as it requires 6 RCA inputs
post #15 of 17
you need a reciever with a spdif in.... what other inputs does your reciever have?

Then your reciever does not have a decoder....

6 inputs = pass through to the speakers w/ the reciever controlling volume/amps/power

does your reciever have a coax digtial in? or a optical digital in?

yeah those are pretty key, as for things, he may still need to get something like the creative products i suggested if he wishes to hook his machine up to that reciever.... as they have a variety of outputs including optical and others...
