Overclocking a PCG-VX71 (PIII-850Mhz) Vaio

Hi there

Im a Notebooks forum newbie, so please be gentle with me

I was wondering if i could overlock this slightly. To say 1Ghz? or 900Mhz?

Has anyone done this? I tried clockgen on a desktop P4 3.0 and have a thermaltake fan etc... for my desktop PC. Meaning i know something about overlocking, but nothing about overclocking laptops!

FYI the specs are below:

Sony Vaio-PCG-VX71P
PII 850Mhz
384MB RAM
4MB Internal Video Card
Wireless Orinoco LAN Card

Many thanks

For one, OCing a laptop is nothing like a desktop, because nothin can be done in the bios. You have to do it in windows with clock gen or set fsb, which is hit or miss, because it doesnt really work as well, but u also have to find a version that works for ur motherboard, which is old as hell, so i doubt ull be able to.

Good point adinu

I guess the only thing i can do is i remmeber a program about that made your cpu run at its proper clock.

laptops sometimes drop down when theyre not doing much and only use full speed when they want to. For example 850Mhz is the speed of the Vaio but at idle on a checking program it said running at 500Mhz.

Is there any way i can make it always 850Mhz? Also wouldnt it then speed up slightly by actually being in the speed its supposed to?

(Not that bothered about power consumption as it will be plugged in. When using batteries i just wouldnt run the program).

I forgot the name of it. It had a smiley face as its icon.

Recap anyone?????

First, u can just do it in the control panel, then power options, then select always on. Thats gonna make the cpu run at full power. You can also do this using rmclock, or notebookhardwarecontrol.

Secondly, when the cpu is underclocked, its because its not needed to run at full speed. And when it is needed, it will automatically go up to 850Mhz.

So overall, having a cpu run at full speed, and one running at half speed and only goin up to max when needed gets teh same performance. You should not be noticing a performance decrease from having the cpu throttle itself up and down.

you can upgrade your cpu up to i think it is 1.13 for about $30 shipped from ebay

Really?

Tell me more..please?

What make? Is it new of course? Will it fit the Vaio PCG VX71P motherboard (ie> made for that)

£30 is nothing. i might aswell so i am interested.

Of course its not new, p3's have not been made for years. And yes if u get the same exact cpu as the one u have now only faster, it should fit. Tho idk if u can get them for that low of a price, but u can look.

How do i know which CPU Model i have to make it work?

Are there instructions for removing processor on these laptops? (i done on pc before btw) just a beginner on notebooks. Though i have just managed to change the HDD on it successfully.

I have just rang Sony Europe up and asked about upgrading CPU and they said no (obviously i suppose cos it invalidates warranty etc..) however it is already out of warranty i suppose!
