NIC doesn't start due to USB?

I have a "Jewel" notebook (from the Netherlands) wich has a sis650 chipset.

The problem is that my networkcard doesn't work when I boot my notebook when my usb printer is attached AND switched on (hp930).
I was thinking that it could be that my mobo can't start the NIC because the printer is draining to much power. This because when I remove the printer, switch off my notebook and back on, the nic works again.

Has anyone else experienced something like this?

I already ruled out some options:
* it has nothing to do with a cable
* it doesn't happen with my usb flash drive (wich uses very little power)
* no driverproblem, happens in XP, win2k3 and Linux
* ...
Another strange thing is that another computer (connected directly) or a switch detects a network connection but they cannot reach my notebook. So it must be getting some power but maybe not enough?

want more details, just ask

Smells like a power overload issue.
USB can only support 500 mA per hub. Particularly on a notebook these current loads are strictly enforced and will cause the shutdown you see.

One way to check your current loads under XP is to go to Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager.
Then select USB controllers -> USB Root Hub -> Power
That should tell you the current draw from each device.
If it exceeds 500mA you cannot connect both at the same time.

It doesn't shutdown.
When turned on or off my printer draws 2mA, the flashdrive 100mA.

The problem is that my networkcard doesnt work when I boot while my printer is connected. I haven't tested this with other printers (because I have no others). Just disconnecting it and rebooting doesn't help, I really need to shut down and switch back on after disconnecting the printer to make the nic work.
=> maybe BIOS cannot start the device?
