Buy M170 or wait for M1710?

The M170 looks really good at ~$1400.

Question: How well does the M170 run current-generation games (e.g Battlefield 2, HalfLife 2, FEAR, Elder Scroll: Oblivion, COD2, etc.)? How well do you think it will run games in the next 18 months?

Basically, is the M170 good enough to run games well in the near future, or is the M1710 the way to go? (It has duo core and a 7900.)

Future games will utilize DX10. Not even the 7900 will support DX10 (so they say). The 7900 is only marginally better than the 7800. The M1710 will be A LOT more than $1400. The M170 plays those games real well. Most with high settings and max AA.

Ok I just bought it literally 30 minutes ago.
I have been pondering this for honestly hours upon hours over the past few days, the cons and the pros. First off, Dell will undoubtedly be releasing the XPS M1710 in a matter of days. It will have a better chipset in the 945PM, which allows faster memory at 667mhz aswell as a maximum of 4GB. It will have a core duo processor along with either a 7900GS or 7900GTX go, with the 7900GTX providing about 15% better performance aswell as a more advanced architecture with 90nm as opposed to 110nm with the 7800GTX. In short the new XPS M1710 will be better. But then you have to factor in cost, aswell as the arrival of Windows Vista in January 2007.
When Vista hits, it will hit with Intel Merom and DX10 capable graphics cards, no question. BY the time Vista has settled in, which is about 12 months from now, there will be a new and improved XPS by then, which is more suitable than the upcoming XPSM1710. The new XPS will cost substantially more than they are selling the M170 for now I think, and it's worth saving perhaps $1000-1500 on the new XPS and put that towards a future vista notebook next year, as the current XPS is more than capable up until and perhaps through the beginning of Vista.
Conclusion, if you want the best of the best creme de la creme, wait a few days and get the XPSM1710. If you can settle for something very good but not quite the best, but at a bargain price, get the XPS now and put the difference towards a Vista based notebook next year. Sorry for the long post, just went through the possibilities.

Can the M170 play Battlefield 2 and Oblivion at 1920x1200 (not necessarily at full details)? If so, that's enough for me.

BF2 yes, Oblivion hell know. Even Crossfire and SLI desktops have trouble at those settings.

I play oblivion at 1900x1200 medium details and it plays fine.

Not natively, but it will surely be supported, by software emulation in some parts. That will make it significantly slower than a card that implements DX10 in hardware, at least for games that depend heavily on DX10-specific features.

Anyone hear anything more about the rumored April 14th release date for the M1710?

Well, it's much easier to just wait a number of hours than to try to get an informed reply, now isn't it?

DX 10 will be only with MS Vista. 99% of todays games are DX 9 and will stay that way for a number of years to come. I would buy the XPS M 170 and wait for a few years until the gaming industry starts making games DX 10 before going with a high priced machine that will be obsolete in a couple of years.

Hey, almost ANYTHING is better than my I9300!

I'd get the M1710 anyday. Ny I9300 that I bought last year is CRAP compared to it.

No matter when you buy, something new will be out soon.

I don't like the new look, particularly the silver on the main body (the area surrouding the keyboard). It looks like a mac laptop.

I'm sure it can, but the next one (after the M1710) might be more worth it, not only for DX10 and 64-bit capability through Merom's architecture....but because the next laptop SHOULD be HDCP-ready and *probably* have a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD option, making it a bonafide entertainment center laptop.

Or you can just pirate HD movies and not have to worry about that crap...
