Looking at Voodoo Thread Closed?

Thread Starter
I thought this was an open forum???

Why did the Alienware moderator close my thread regarding my question of selecting Voodoo or Alienware??? Are they afraid that someone is going to say that Voodoo is a better laptop?

Quite honestly, the reason I asked the question here is because I thought it would give all the Alienware owners a chance to tell how good their experience was with Alienware's laptop and the company, but instead, my thread gets closed as if they are afraid of what someone might say. Curiously, it was closed right after someone suggested getting the Voodoo instead of an Alienware laptop.

I'm starting this thread again because like most perspective purchasers, I don't want to make a mistake and I believe in the power of information. So again I ask, what are the differences between Voodoo and Alienware...

the laptops
the companies
your experiences

And please, if you don't want threads like this, then don't just close the thread, take Alienware off the forum!

oof, so many things i could say to flame you, and so many things i could say about alienware and voodoo, but I won't, and thats why they closed the thread, so it wouldnt start into another which company is better flamewar against the forum members.. I think.

Put these questions in NOTEBOOKS GENERAL and you wont run into trouble...you might end up getting flamed but there is an equal chance of getting good answers

well, Charlie was complaining over in the Sager vs AW thread about flaming, etc. (when there was none to be found) and then he complained in the Voodoo vs AW thread (when, again, I seem to recall no flaming), so maybe the mod closed it in order to shut him up. I don't know, but it ticked me off, personally.

If there was a full-out flame-war going on, I can understand that. But when it's someone wanting an honest opinion on a potential $3500-5000 purchase, I don't see what the problem is in comparisons. I'm all for comparisons. My tastes change according to the information that I take in and other peoples' experiences with their machines is part of my overal equation used when trying to decide what to buy. Threads like this give me pros and cons of each. If there are flamers, well, I think the mods can feel free to delete those posts (if necessary) or have the posters edit their comments. I don't see how that relates to the last thread in the least.

I fail to see what the problem was in the last thread (other than Charlie not being able to shut his box). Grrr. Someone needs to learn the difference between comparisons and mad, lunatic raving. Accepting that AW is not the pinnacle of computing prowess will go a long way in helping said "someone" relax a bit more whenever a viewpoint that isn't his is expressed.

As for the AW/Voodoo question, I'd like to know myself. Personally, the Voodoo's seem way overpriced for the options that they have. I've been trying to figure out what's so special about the Voodoo's other than cool paintjobs (which come standard w/ AW and as an option w/ Sagers thru PC Torque). As I'm looking to buy a notebook right now, any and all opinions count. I've got my mind set on the Sager 8790, but AW and Voodoo aren't necessarily out of the race. That's another reason I was disappointed that the last thread was nuked (unnecessarily, I feel).

My advice is stick with Sager. Less pricy, less funky where it doesnt matter, more powerful where it matters - which is what matters...you get BANG!! for the buck.

besides - do you want to wait for a month (maybe more) for your cool Alienware - if so then go ahead because its a nicer looking notebook than the Sager. The Voodoo is essentially the same as Sager but they paint it (if you want them to) and bump up the price with a load of hype (Anyone thinking Go-L ?? )

I just read the closed thread. No reason why it should have been closed. I dont think mods should intervene unless something goes horribly wrong. I am beginning to doubt who's side the mods are on...

this forums is also slanting towards the old and closed alienware forums mode of operation where people are being shut up. The question was innocent, the following discussion was sensible - no reason to close a thread.

to the mods

The forum is Alienware notebooks not "Let's compare different notebooks." And besides, these threads have a tendency to inhabit flamers ::cough cough:: gsferrari
post #8 of 45
Polite, mature discourse, regardless of the topic, should not be closed. We're all adults here, right?

That is all.

mature Terraform? I thought so...now im not so sure

The moderators earn their places because they tend to have good judgement. They are the mature ones, and thankfully they are in charge. If they close any of my threads, I will understand that they though that it was in this forum's best interest- not mine.

so suck up some more to the mods...mebbe you'll be a mod some day

Where was the good judgement in closing that thread?

enlighten me please...
There was already a thread asking this question. Why didn't he contribute to that one instead of starting a new one?

That makes more sense.

I agree with this but better to tell him than to close the thread where people were having a discussion. Its like walking into a room where people are having a meeting and then asking them to get out!!

Removing the previous thread was good judgment because posts like this occur in comparative threads.

How can one be objective when they are partial?
Biased?? I am not stopping you from making your comments on the qualities of an Alienware or a Voodoo notebook

Please do - trying to close threads like this undermines the very notion that you are comfortable with anyone discussing something that might "offend" or "put-down" your beloved alienware...

Besides - if you care to read - I actually, quite against my character, made a point in favor of Alienware in that post

So please post your opinion of the alienware and why he should be getting one instead...

Try to win an argument instead of running away from it
post #16 of 45
Being partial is certainly different than being biased. I have no quarrel with the topic. My problem is with ignorant people that think they have to have their way all the time.

Without trying to be rude, you know nothing about me. I made an educated decision on getting an Alienware computer. I researched it for over a month. I even planned on getting a Sager at one point. So I wouldn't call it my beloved Alienware.

By the way, I haven't gotten my notebook yet (read signature), so I couldn't possibly give my opinions on the qualitative points of my notebook. I also don't own a Sager. My purpose here was to support the moderators because they have good judgement.

Your character was never established by contradicting your support for Alienware (cool Alienware). Be specific and avoid averments and you wouldn't unintentionally flame as much. Lastly, and believe me lastly, using funky to describe a notebook is wholly general in nature.
My character is normally anti-alienware but of late im seeing positive things in them too. Not quite enough to make me drool but its there and they seem to be getting better.

And i have to have my way when I am right, which in this case has not been decided yet and is still open for discussion. I usually make a statement and wait for the others who differ to come up with an argument which has not happened in this case.

Again you focus on defending your purchase rather than answering this guys question. Shall we say...lack of focus on the topic?

Since you have done your homework before ordering surely you must have something to say about what influenced your decision to go with AW in which case I invite you to put it down here for the gentleman to see. Who knows it might help him make a decision.

Lastly - I dont intend to flame, neither do I intend to change the way I speak on the forums. If you look at my posts rationally you cannot find any reason to call it an attack of any sort - unless of course you are on the defensive even before the debate has begun.

Moderators dont need support from you and me - they have to know what is acceptable and what is not. That thread which they closed was not offensive in any fashion...just a decent discussion...which is what the forums are for. They stepped in on a whim because they are always on the defensive here..."Ooh! someone's gonna say something about Alienware and its gonne be a mess - so lets shutdown the whole thing!!".

See where this can go? The forums is heading the way the original Alienware forums (which happens to be paid for and maintained by Alienware unlike this forums) went - closed/heavily moderated and totally useless for all practical purposes.

Dont let this happen to this forums. Support the mods and help them get on with their task but dont be blind to the lines that define the limits.

I still think its wrong to close a thread without some kind of indication as to why. Looks to me like Alienware is afraid of a little competition. Could it be because Voodoo got Notebook of the Year in Maximum PC and Gamers Depot that Alienware is concerned? Naaaaa. Couldn't be that.

Anyways, if money is no object, and you want looks/performance either company makes a compelling statement, but Voodoo's M855 will beat AW Area 51M, and Voodoos M460 will kill the Sentia and match the Area 51M in performance in a thinner, lighter, better battery life form factor.

I agree to an extent but choosing a laptop is not always about performance. I want to hear the other reasons why one would prefer an Alienware or Voodoo to a Sager and I am waiting for feedback from the people who own/ordered an alienware.

Lets not make strong statements until the other side has spoken. Save the best for the last

FriedToast,

Normally I do not respond to people that personally attack me, but I will make an exception. First, EVERY thread that I have read that started comparing one notebook to Alienware has gone nowhere, this is fact. Second, I believe when you start a thread that starts comparing one notebook to another, it is called "Trolling", which is not allowed in this forum. Third, if you want to talk general notebooks, then there is a general notebooks forum here http://notebookforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=35 if you are challenged enough not to be able to find this, which I assume this is true because if you knew how to search this forum then you would already have found several threads that compare Hypersonic vs AW, Voodoo vs AW and would have noticed how they turn sour, very quickly. Fourth, we are not all adults here, hence the personal attacks, flaming, and trolling that go on in these forums. Thankfully, there are adults that are moderating this forum. Thank you for your understanding.

Sincerely,
