Acer Ferrari4006WLMi - 100GB or 120GB?!?!

Thread Starter
Over the last month, I have done research on which laptop I want and believe that I can get the most out of the Acer Ferrari 4006 for the price. If I do purchase this laptop, I would like to purchase it from newegg.com because of their price/service.

Newegg
states that this model comes with a 100GB hard drive as well as the following sites:

Buy.com
ZipZoomFly

The sites below states that this laptop comes with 120GB:

TigerDirect
eCost
Everyone on eBay
CDW

OnSale.com actually STATES BOTH!! (100GB below the title, 120GB in the Specs table below)

If you click any of the links above, you will be taken right to the product page.

Can anyone please clarify how much hard drive space the Ferrari 4006 comes with? All of the models above were the (LX.FR40M.027) so I do not see why there would be any difference. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Also does anyone here own this laptop? If so, please let me know what you think of it.

Thanks.

I clicked the link but did not see where specifically you got that information. Can you please provide the exact url.

A few weeks ago, I called Newegg and asked them the HD question. They told me to contact Acer, and they provided me their phone number. According to the person I spoke with "The LX.FR40M.027 has a 120 GB" but they were kind of clueless and had to put me on hold for 5 min to get that answer. So I'm not sure if newegg got a different setup then most of the other companies or if it is just a simple typo.

I just found where you got that information (here)

But the ironic thing is that EVEN ACER HAS CONFLICTING INFORMATION!!! When I click the "Technical specifications" link above the text, under storage, is says "Up to 120GB* Ultra ATA/100 hard drive". This is supposed to be the specs for All Ferrari 4000 models as stated in title of that page. Is this implying that the 4005 has 100GB and the 4006 has 120GB or does it mean both have 100GB but can be upgraded to 120GB? I didn't think there was a upgrade limit on hard drive space (only things like memory). According to the sites I listed earlier to purchase this laptop, 120GB is included.

Again anyone who knows anything else or anyone who owns the Ferrari 4006, please clue me in.

Thanks again.

It´s the german Acer-page! Hope you can read it! The 4005 isn´t listed anymore(only 4002 and 4006)! But 4006->120GB! I have the 4005-> 100GB!

I once read in a forum (loooong ago) about an user buying an Acer Ferrari 4005 (I think; it could be 4006 as well) from a website, expecting it to be shipped with a 100GB HDD. Upon delivery, he was delighted to find it to be shipped with a 120GB HDD instead. So I guess that some venders can put in the HDD of their choosing, thus resulting in some venders like NexTag displaying specs with 120, while BestPrice showing 100 GB.
If you want, I've included a link below that shows prices from 16 venders on NexTag.com

I'm interested; how much was it? And was it a 4005 or 4006?

4006
It was $21XX and it came with a $150 rebate, in the end it was about $2030 or something..

I was flipping through a PC World Magazine and found an ad for the Ferrari 4006 stating 120GB. It also says April/May 2006. Does this mean that maybe there will be a new model in June? I just wish newegg would show 120GB on their site so I feel more confident before I buy.

Another reason I wanted to buy from Newegg wad because they have an optional extended warranty service which I would get. Did any one else purchase a similar extended warranty from them or anywhere else? If so how much did it cost and have you had to use it? Do you think an extended warranty is worth $380.00 for two years or is that a bit much?
You dont need to buy from newegg to get extended warranty, you can find it in many places, there's even a guy selling them here:

http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=143316

and yes, IMO $380 is too much (unless it includes accidental warranty, in that case its good)

Acer offers extended warranty for all of its laptops, doesn't matter where you purchased them from. Go to the website below
http://www.acerpanam.com/synapse/for...=7117&areaid=2
And you'll notice on the right hand side a tab that says "Extend your warranty." You just have to register your laptop within a given number of days after you've purchased it.

Will Acer support mail you the replacement parts or do you have to mail your laptop away for repair?

According to Newegg, they offer on-site support but it is more expensive. I do not know if they cover "accidental damage"

Here are the details

Like......? I was also thinking about the Acer TravelMate 8200 but I heard of some people who have had issues with that system. I also heard the Dell XPS M170 was a good system but It seamed a little bit to big/heavy for me. Plus I promised myself never to buy from Dell again since I had so many problems with my inspiron 8500. (Dell's support is horrible)

I am open to any other notebook recommendations you may have.

Thanks again.

MSI-1039 would be my top option right now. 15,4" with the X1600, loaded for less than 2K:
http://www.xmeld.com/html/msi1039.html

However if you can wait a while (maybe 1-2 months) Asus is coming with some pretty good stuff like the W3J (Dual core, X1600, 14.1") and some others... they should all be within your price range or cheaper

Hey I have a Dell Inspiron 8500 too! And I totally agree with you on Dell's customer support (at least their online chat support anyway; they....really suck lol.) And I'm looking to buy an Acer Ferrari too hehe. R u my evil twin??

Thanks for the recommendation! This is another system I can consider before I make my purchase. I can wait a few months. I was planning to make a purchase either late June/early July. I know by then there will probably be a whole new line of systems available. Maybe I am doing research a little too soon.

I wasn't able to find any reviews for the MSI-1039, do you know where I could find some?

The reason I want to get a new laptop is for college in a few months. According to your signature you are in Johns Hopkins University Class of 2010. I will be going to Towson (Class of 2010), which is also in MD, very close to Baltimore. I may be your twin, but I am not evil.

lol, perhaps I'm the evil one then, heh?
lol jk.
