A8JM vs. W3J

What are the pro and cons over eachother? I am moving on up from my Z71V to something more portable. Having a tough time deciding between the two.

Wait till they come out. That's the only way that you are going to know the pros and cons of each one, internally. On the exterior, I would have to say the w3j looks much more attractive, with the brushed aluminum top, and the design. The A8Jm is actually pretty nice looking imo too, just not as nice as the w3j.

Also, the x1600 is a 12 pipe card, but it only has 4 ROP's, while the 7600 will be an 8 pipe card with 8 ROP's. It should be interesting to see how they perform in comparison to each other, but based on past video card designs, I am going to have to give the edge to nVidia for speed. It probably won't be by much, but I estimate that the nVidia will be faster.

The W3J is supposed to be the luxury Class of Asus. Kinda like comparing Toyota to Lexus.

From what i have heard the A8J might start at 1500CDN as opposed to 2100CDN. We are also supposed to be able to Customize the A8J. Thats the one i got my eye on right now.
Prelim bencmarks show the Nvidia 7600 neck on neck with the X1600.

I saw on ASUS' website that they feature what they call "Mobile theater" on some of their laptops. This apparently includes a small remote that goes neatly into the PCMCIA slot. Does anybody know if this feature will be available on the W3J?
Nope, only the more media center based laptops, like he W1 and W2 series has that feature
post #6 of 20
it says on the asus site that the A8JM will have a go7800.

I wonder if there is difference in display quality too. Nice models, i might go for one of those. Anybody know where I can take a look on ASUS laptops around toronto-hamilton area, showroom?

CanadaSys has a showroom in the GTA, on Warden/Steelses.

Though you can only see the current models, not the unreleased ones(obviously). But it's still nice to look and play around with

WOW. When will the A8JM become available? I was looking at the Wj3, but this one looks even more promising.

A8Jm... late May, not confirmed.
what is the price of A8Jm going to be I wonder
post #13 of 20
I've heard different numbers. Based on everything I've read I think it'll be about $100-$200 less than the w3j. I've read that the W3J is likely going to retail at $1799, but Asus' website has it MSRP'd at $1699. So that would put the A8JM at anywhere from $1499 US to $1699 US.

How's that for vague?

that's right, even Asus have not decide the MSRP yet, but people are free to guess.

Just looked at the specs again for both machines, but threw in the A8Ja also. It looks like to me that the main differences are:

W3j
3 USB Ports
No DVI port
256 Ati x1600 graphics card
No built-in webcam
8 Cell battery
2.2 Kilos with weightsaver.

A8Jm
5 USB Ports
DVI Port
NVidia GeForce Go7600 512MB
Built-in webcam
6 Cell battery
3 Kilos?

A8Ja
Same as A8Jm except for graphics card
512 HyperMemory (part shared) Ati x1600

Price about the same +- $100

Am I missing something?
A8Ja says it uses 512MB of HyperMemory for the X1600. That should leave it performing well below the 256MB discrete X1600 in the A8Jm.

IBS, Recheck the weight on the 8j series. Not sure but do you mean 3kg? Checkin on the Asus site the weight is not actually specified in the dimensions/weight category.
Yes, I thought it was a little weird. Like you say weight is not specified, but in the W8Jm available thread theres a link to a reseller who says its 6.98kg.

But with so similar specs, it would mean the added 256 graphics card is one hell of a heavyweight, accounting for almost five kilos difference. But Im sure youre right though. Ill add it to the comparison together with the hypermemory comment.

somehow, I'm guessing that they got pounds and kilograms mixed up. it's most likely 6.98 pounds, which would be 3.17 kilograms

I'd say the dealer has listed the shipping weight, which includes the adapter, packaging and box.
