Just bought my first lappy... a Gateway!

Thread Starter
I just purchased this laptop:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1140393613030

Don't laugh, I'm a broke college student who had a few BB gift cards lying around.

Anyway, what should I know about this particular model? Better yet, what should I do once it arrives...
I know I will definitely upgrade the memory, but what else should I consider?

Please feel free to recommend a case as well. Thank you!

Congrats on the lappy
Just a few ideas:
1. http://www.tweakxp.com/performance_tweaks.aspx
2. http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php
3. update all your drivers direct from the manufacturer web site if u can, especially the graphic, ide controller and the audio

cheers ...

Hey, it's nothing to be ashamed of, we're in the same boat! College pwns my bank account lol. Anyway, yeah - upgrade the ram and, if you want, toss in a 7200rpm hard drive (60, 80, and 100gb flavors are available). That should definately improve your boot time!

Hope your happy with it!

Just so ya know though, those are some of the worst componets you could get in a lappy.

But its college, all ya need to do is type and listen to music

Best Buy had the MX6121 for $599 as of last week. Pretty much same hardware, 370 celeron, 256 ddr2, 60g hitachi, cdrw/dvd, wireless, but with the 15.4 widescreen. I purchased one. SO far upgraded memory to 512 for less than $50. For surfing the net its great! just dont plan on playing games on it or using it for hifi sound. Thats what desktops are for.

I just bought the same laptop from Best Buy. I didn't want to spend much on a laptop as most of my spending change goes for upgrades on my three desktops. I needed something light to carry around to classes. I had borrowed one of my friend's Dell laptops and if felt like I was carrying a brick in my backpack.(It was did play city of heroes nicely though) This was one of the cheapest 5 pounders I could find. It is much easier on the back and fits needs perfectly. It's a great laptop for those who need to do papers for school, surf the web, and check your facebook page.
