Does your school even allow the use of personal laptop computers?
Why do you need a laptop at HS? Personally, I don't think HS is laptop friendly.

Its more than likely going to be stolen, dropped, confinscated, etc. Don't buy a laptop for high school. There is no reason to, it is unecessary.

What do they do in high school that warrants a laptop? I forgot.
there is absolutely no reason to buy a laptop for highschool. take it from a current junior with 2 of them. yeah its nice to bright one to class once in a while (ie...finals, when you have like 5 hours to take a test and you finish it in an hour...gotta do something the rest of the time).

but yeah...don't get one, don't bright it. you'll be a target for theft and you will definatly be a target in terms of your reputation somewhat crashing (unless like i said, its finals and you need something to do... or have a study hall to burn).

that said, an old IBM Thinkpad T2x or T3x should be plenty. (say that as a T23 owner)

Wow, is reputation that important in high school? Do they ridicule computer savvy students?

disclaimer: i have no intention of flaming you or embarrassing you computer_n00b. i only stand up for what is right and righteous.

computer_n00b, i've read some of your previous posts. i am confused whether you are the same person behind your name since you refer much about your "son" in your posts. whoever you are, you have also made very good laptop suggestions and reccomendations to other NFB'ers in your posts. i think you are quite well on your own on selecting a laptop for high school. also, i don't think there are laptops out there that fit your purchase constraints, especially if you stress very much on minimal noise and on a $800 budget only; if you add in a few hundred dollars more, you can shoot for the better averatecs. i've been around a few circuit citys and best buys here and there and i have to say that the averatecs are pretty quiet. a few friends and family of mine also own averatecs for their bargain price and portability. i'm sure that there are other laptops that are even quieter than the averatecs, but laptops can't be whisper soft quiet. i'm sensing that you want to use your laptop during class and you want it to be as quiet as possible for obvious reasons. don't worry man, i wish my 3880 was quieter so i can play cs: source in class. you're going to be in high school, classes will be noisy most of the time, so all the noise will dominate over your laptop noise. i think its cool that you look for a laptop at your age; having geek attatched to your name along with popular is a good mix. i hold many titles myself and have friends who are the epitome of all nerds and geeks. unless your high school is as small as my 400 student capacity high school and you know everyone back and front, its best that you keep a good eye on your laptop. remember that all schools in general are high risk areas. although many people think that a laptop at a high school level is unnecessary, i think that is will only benefit you more. all of my written work is typed nice and neat; almost everyone will eventually type faster than they write too. final word, chill about the noisy laptops buddy. there are bigger things that you should worry about. i'm sorry i went off topic. the averatecs are the best that i could come up with that meet your constraints. i think gateway's nx200 might be something to look at too but i don't have much to say about gateways.

Toshiaki's post fortune: everyone loves their laptops. don't be smug and say someone smaller than you can't have one. don't lie, don't perpetrate.

i live in a pretty blue collar area where the annual incomes of families which are represented in my school range from $30k - $150k (vast majority in the $70k-$90k range). So nobody is really dirt poor, but not really rich. There are about 3000 people in the building (staff and students) on a typical school day. So you gotta watch your stuff close.

as for reputation...that depends. If you bring it just once in a while, say for a project, to kill a study hall, or to watch a movie or something on final's days, then you're fine, if anything it will kinda help you. If you drag it every day... you will be nerdified.

As a 30 year old I can tell you, that being nerdified in high school is a good thing. The cool kids are doing dope and giving each other VD and heading to junior college. F them. Be who you are. When you get to college nobody cares any more if you were "in".
thats true....college is definatly a carte blanche. and just because you're non-nerd doesn't automatically make you popular....and even more so automatically does not mean you're gonna be a doper. however you're right...totally don't wanna be seen with the stoners and sl*ts of my school.

Get this, it looks high school-ish. Check out the Sharp Actius MM20, it's fanless so it's whisper quiet, it weighs 2.0lbs and is quite small and portable. It's also $900.

heh, that would be cool to bring the laptop to high school. i'm not sure about you, but for mine, i don't think that's legal. it's not in the "rule book" either. though there is a computer lab and library with computers.

maybe because it's not public ... ?

i should really bring my PPC but then i'd get too distracted

notebooks are allowed in a lot of school. the only restraint is that it has to be relatively quite and if during class-time you can only be taking notes or doing work on it relavant to the class. [no games!]

1) Get a laptop and keep it at your house (and amaze your friends when they come over, not in the cafeteria).

2) Listen... you got caught in a lie. No big deal. No need to say that your dad gave you his account to a place where its free to post. Be strait forward, be honest, and you'll have a good experience.

your dad and you have strikingly similar if not identical typing styles. don't pull a fast one with me buddy. chill friend, just don't do it again. i love being a covert agent.

Toshiaki's post fortune: we all learn from our mistakes, make sure you make lots of them.
