High-res, 14" widescreen, do they exsist?

I've been looking and I can't seem to find one. Does what i'm looking for even exsist?

I've decided that my next notebook isn't going to be a 15+" book, it's just to big to be as portable as I'd like.

I've become very accustomed to the screen real estate that I have, not really the size, but the resolution, 1400x1050. For reference, I run 1920x1440 on a 19" on my desktop, so I'm rather use to high resolution. I'm really afraid I'm going to hate going to ~1280x800 on something like the Asus W3J.

Basically i'm looking for, 14" or smaller WSXGA, with a glare type display and a halfway decent graphics chipset, something along the lines of an X600 or better. I'm not picky

As far as I know, the newly released Dell D620 is the only laptop with a widescreen 14" with higher than WXGA resolution. It has WXGA+ which means 1440x900 instead of 1280x800, so a little bit better. Dell seems to be having some supply issues with their new Latitude laptops though and they removed the nVidia Quadro video card option. I heard nVidia was having troubles with those cards?

Well the Asus V6Va combines good specs, good resolution (1400x150) and its pertty light (5.5 pounds). It is however a 15" and not a cheap notebook.

Pretty much dell is the only one with the WSXGA right now.. However there is an Asus A8j 14"widescreen coming out... The specs are WXGA. Its not out in North america yet, but one Taiwan site list the spec as WSXGA. Only time will tell.

Asian brands don't like high resolution screens for an unknown reason to me... so forget Asus.

Anyway, WXGA+ in a 14.1 is like WSXGA+ in 15.4. I doubt they will go beyond that.

heres a link to a webpage that shows screen resolutions for laptop monitors. out of all laptop screens as of now, the 15.4 inch wuxga has the sharpest resolution at 147 ppi.

I guess I got it backwards, I'm not looking for WSXGA, rather WXGA+. Just something beyond 1280x800, because that's just to damn small (or big, depending on how you look at it

Something like 1360x1024 would be nice, or 1400x. Even this cheap HP has a 1400x1050 panel on it, granted its a 15" 4:3, but still

I might have to keep an eye on that Dell D620. If they bring that back out with the non-integrated graphics, I might have to jump on it.

It could be because asian fonts are nearly impossible to read at high resolution.

看得懂吗?

The above would look like little tiny black boxes that you wouldn't be able to see clearly. 这 and 达 or 厉 and 历 would be hard to tell the difference at high resolution.

Here's a bump from the dead...

So I've been checking out the D620 now that it's available with something other than integrated video.

I really really despise Dell. I've had problems with every Dell I've ever owned. But man is it loaded.. DL DVDRW, BT, Fingerprint, 100g 7200, 14" widescreen, 1gb ram, Duo 2ghz\4Meg L2, hell it even has a serial port, etc etc. I'm a bit disappointed in the light leakage and the lack of a SD card reader. I expect SD readers at this point.

Has anything else been released lately?

I wish Asus would have released the W3J in a WSXGA.. grr.

The HP nc6400 can be customized on the HP.com site with a WXGA+ screen for $50 more and has options to upgrade to the X1300 from GMA950. Link.

I was also pretty sure the Lenovo Thinkpad Z61t offered the high res screen but I can't find it on their site.

The Asus A8Js was just announced a week or 2 ago. nvidia 7700 go with a 14" 1440 x 900 screen. So far it's asia only, hopefully it will make it to the US soon, if ever...

To the GP: Yer one picky bastiche! I was looking for the exact same things in my next laptop.

Damn skippy I am. I'm not about to throw down 2k+ on something that is only marginal to me. We just orderd a Cobalt from Chevy decked out exactly the way we wanted it. Even though it's a "cheap" car, I wasn't about to spend 18 grand and settle for not having this or that. Screw that. You only live once. And if I have to get by without a lappy, then so be it. Atleast I won't be beating my self up with buyers remorse

That HP nc6400 that lazy offered up is tits, except for one thing. It appears to have a matte screen. The graphics are a wee bit underpowered too but should be roughly on par with my old-school 9800 Pro in my desktop, which would suit me fine. Hell, I still play Starcraft and Unreal (as in, the original Unreal that looked sooooooo bitchin' on a GLide driver. I miss 3dfx)

That HP is quite nice though, I especially dig all of the security features in it. I'm really half tempted to pick it up, but I've become so accustomed to the nice bright shiny display on my girlfriends MSI S262 that I'm currently typing on. If this thing had a bit higher res screen and a decent video card, I'd be allll over it. 12.1" widescreen is very useable and very light, I just need higher resolution.

Either way, that HP just ruled out the Dell. Maybe I'll wait for the A8J. The W3J was PERFECT for me, except for the damn screen resolution. Bah.

And not that I expect this from any PC laptop manufacture in my lifetime, but for the love of god, BACKLIT KEYBOARDS! Apple had no problem with this and everytime the self-proclaimed-computer-god-Apple-dork that I work with comes around with his powerbook or whatever the hell it is, he rubs it in every time. God I hate that man. Backlit keyboard, it can't be that freaking difficult! And something else, can we come to an agreeance on where the damn function key gets placed? On the first laptop we had, it was where the Ctrl key should be, the next one, it was placed where it should have been, in between the Ctrl and windows keys. Now on this MSI, it's back where the Ctrl key should be. I Ctrl + Enter in Internet Explorer all day long and that really pisses me off.

So anyhow, back to the Asus. According to their US website, this is supposed to be available mid-October. Looks like I'll have a new toy to play with as it meets all of my requirements.

Thanks Labmouse.

There's the Asus A8Js, which is 14'' WXGA+
Also the HP nc-6400, 14'' WXGA+ - there are a couple others, too - I think the 8400 and the 8440? I'm not entirely sure whether they have 15'' though.
And I think the Tecra M7 (tablet) is as well, but I'm not sure about the non-tablet version.

There are a few lol, you just gotta dig. I was looking for the same thing

12.1'' widescreen comes in the Toshiba m400 tablet with a wxga+ screen. Not sure if you want a tablet though.

EDIT: nevermind, already posted. Must have missed it...
