Ordering a 9750 tomorrow! Suggestions?

Hello everyone!
I am more than likely going to order a sager 9750 tomorrow.
It will serve mostly as my fiance's work/gaming computer, and will mostly be in an office or at home. I will continue to use my 5720 as the quasi-mobile machine that it is ^_^
Now we just have to come up with a nice paint scheme for smooth-creations to do with it!

I do want some opinions on some things though.
First, do you think it is worth it to upgrade from the AMD X2 4400+ to the 4800+?
I know in a desktop I would say No, and just overclock the 4400 to the 4800's speed. I am not sure if this is possible in the 9750.
Also, is it like the 5720 with the PATA related oc option? I dont think it is, but maybe I am wrong.

Also, does anyone have the 9750 with the WSXGA screen as opossed to the WUXGA one? How is the screen? We have not really decided on which to get yet, although I love the UXGA on my 5720.

Another thing, which wireless card is it again that supports 64bit ?
It will probably run 64bit linux of some sort either unbuntu or gentoo.

Well thanks for any input!

Good luck with your purchace!

Personally, I dont think its worth it to upgrade past the 4400 mark. But then again, I'm cheep and dont have the cash to do it so take that for what its worth lol!

As for hard discs, I would go SATA and put them in a RAID 0 config. Top performance that way!

From what I've heard theres no bios overclock option in the 9750 so having a PATA or SATA wouldnt affect that.

I cant help with the screens on that model too much since I dont see them often at all. But I'm rather partial to WSXGA (1680x1050) on most 17" laptop LCD's. Some people will call me crazy for that but I just think anything smaller is too hard on the eyes. Although at time of typing this I have a migrane and in my slight migrane induced insanity I want a 1024x768 screen to help make it go away!!! lol

Sorry, Kitty, but I dont know which wireless cards support 64bit.

Then you're not alone. I also decided to stick with the WSXGA (1680x1050). I've used that resolution on a previous laptop (HP nx7000) for the past 2.5 years, and it's more than enough. I'm also getting a bit older, and want to spare my eyes the drain of a too big resolutions. Personally I would only take 1920x1200 on the 19" screen...

This time we didn't opt for overnight shipping... Too much when you can get ground for free, and pct is in Texas which isn't that far away.

I will post an in depth review once It arrives, and have comparisons with the 5720 and such.
I know that a lot of people come here for the wealth of information and I would like to do anything to help people find what their looking for, especially if its a sager from pctorque

Have you decided what OS you're going to use?

Personally, I can't wait to see what artwork you choose for this one. Keep in mind you've set the bar pretty high with your 5720.

I really want to try to run dual boot XPx64 and Linux of some variation. Not too sure. I like to mess around with these kinds of things. And why not benefit from the 64 bitness
I really have no clue for artwork. It will be up to my fiance if he wants. We might be moving too soon for it to get done to tell you the truth. Our wedding is only 6 weeks away, and we will probably move soon after that. If it is going to get painted it will have to be asap

He had found this wallpaper and though it might look good on the back with the rest of the entire notebook painted the like it is fire. He drew out a design and was trying to get it scanned and into photoshop.
He said it would have Sager on it written in fire on the back of the lcd lid as well.

What OS would you reccomend? I know BigTrouble has a 9750 and says that Gentoo runs wonderfully.

Cool picture! That would make his laptop an eye-catcher for sure.

I'm using Gentoo x64 myself. I've had no problems with it at all.

One thing you might keep in mind is your RAID setup. I don't know of anyone who has used that onboard RAID with x64 linux. You might consider going software raid on both sides - win & linux. These built in raid devices are really software raid anyways [raid is done by the driver, hw merely stores the config for boot]

Maybe BigTrouble has tried it.

Hurry up and wait

Nice system kitty!

I ordered mine back on the 31st and am still waiting. PCT says all 9750's are on back order from Sager, so no one can process an order right now.

Hope you didn't want it like next day or anything I know it's hard once you've decided to get something of this quality the wait seems like forever and its only more painful when something goes on backorder!

That's odd. My fiance talked to Luke yesterday and everything seemed ok. It says it is now in the building stage.
Well, I don't need it really soon, but it would be nice

Nice choice! This machine is supported very well in linux. I have 3 partitions set atm, one winxp(32bit), one Ubuntu (32 bit) and one Gentoo (64bit). IMO, Gentoo is the best way to go if you want 64bit. I've configured 3 Gentoo servers and was amazed at how well portage handled 64bit builds. Ubuntu works very well too, but the repositories are lacking decent 64bit binaries. Gentoo's repository (portage) does not have that problem. Things are also going to get a bit obfuscated in Ubuntu with the impending release of Dapper. New releases always confuses everyone on what repos to use.

If you plan to use wine or cedega for game in linux, just realize that you may need to create a 32bit chroot to get some of them working in a 64bit install. That's basically just a 32bit version of linux running within your 64bit install. It works really well once you get the hang of it. I play CivIV and Pirates! in Cedega and the performance is really good.

I got all of the hardware working except the webcam, which I didn't even try yet. The 7800 runs REALLY well once you get the newest nvidia drivers loaded.

Gentoo isn't easy if you don't know much about linux. You really need to follow the handbook closely. And even then, you'll probably have to start things over once you realize all the mistakes you made. It's all done in the command line (I would not use the live scripts) so you'll really learn how linux works in the process. It requires alot of patience. It took me 5 days to get a decent Gentoo build up (fully configured gnome).

Finally, don't use raid if you're gonna install linux. You'll have a hell of a time getting the proper drivers loaded with any distro. I run linux on one drive and windows on another and use grub to select the OS. That's the easiest way to go.

That phoenix art is just pure sweetness! I'd just love to see that on a Sager!

another day no sager!

Welp, its the end of another day and still no word from PCT on the sager backorder status.

Sorry to say it might be awhile kitty

Luke just stated earlier that they were going to be in today.
Either way, shouldn't take too long. I would say two weeks max!
I checked on my 5720 and its old order status. It is funny, I ordered on the 17th and it arrived on the 20th.... again I had opted for next day air because I really needed it quick!

Well, dont drive yourself crazy waiting.

I called PCT last Friday because the website said that the order was still awaiting confirmation. My call prompted the notification that the order was sitting in limbo because my credit card had a different ship address than what I used on my order. I called my credit card company the same day and corrected it and called Luke back and he said it would be processed.

Later Friday it moved from the order confirmation stage to the building stage. I checked before I left the office for the weekend.

Strangely on Monday morning I was emailed for my order with an UPS tracking number from PCT. It appeared that my order was built and being shipped.

Now I am a very emotional girl and excitement always overpowers me. So I couldn’t hold back my excitement and went onto UPS to check my tracking. Oddly, it turned out my order was being shipped to Ohio though I lived in Pittsburgh, PA. I emailed UPS and received no answer. Today, the UPS tracking showed my alleged package sitting in Ohio awaiting final delivery. This worried me so much I called UPS with my tracking number to confirm the ship to address. The woman at UPS was very nice and told me the address was in fact Ohio and not Pittsburgh. The only way they would adjust the address is from notification from the seller. Back to PTC.

I called Luke again today to ask if my laptop was shipped to the wrong person or if I had been told someone else’s tracking number. He told me my laptop was still being built, (day 4), and has not been shipped. Then he updated the website similar to what he has done each time I had called him.

I cant fully communicate my disappointment in this situation.

Hey at least your getting updates from PCT on your order status. I seem to only be able to get info regarding the situation from this public forum.

If you are pretty new or have never used Linux before I would definately suggest installing Suse. I have the 64bit Suse 10 on my gateway laptop and the install was as easy as a windows install. I would install Suse, play with it for a bit and then swap over to another version of Linux. Gentoo or Ubuntu would be my choices. Ubuntu will ship you CD/DVD distros for free. I actually grabbed 32 bit, 64bit and mac version all at once and they shipped them to me at no cost. Of course you can alway grab them off the net. I am very interested in how the Sager performs. I'll look forward to reading your findings.

Good luck with the laptop and best wishes on your wedding.
