Troubleshooting XPS G2 probs on my own - advice welcomed

Hi all-

I'm a pretty frequent visitor to these forums though I lurk most times.

Anyhow, I've always had invaluable help from here. And rather than go thru
the frustrating walk-through a Dell tech, I thought to get your opinions with
my problems as of late. I have an XPS Gen 2 laptop (WinXP Home, 2.0ghz,
2gb RAM, 60gb 7200rpm) which has been extremely reliable for about a year.
Recently, however, I've been experiencing the following:

- Frequently get the error message saying that the power adapter is not the
right one, and to replace it with the correct adapter (though I'm using the
stock Dell adapter that came with the laptop).

- Laptop has been running extremely sluggish. While the UI has been
responding normally, apps and games have been pretty slow to response (in
some indication of this, I'm currently getting only about 35 fps in UT2004 at
1024x768).

- CPU load is always maxing out whenever an application is running. This might
be something that's normal, but I've never seen apps eat up so much CPU
before. Additionally, huge amounts of disk activity and mem as well.

Some things I tried already:

- Virus check (with a couple of different apps). Which revealed nothing -
seems to be clean as a whistle.

- Mem test (again with a couple of diff checkers). Again, seems to be fine.

- Disk defrag. I didnt think this was the cause, however, I felt that defragging
the drive would at least eliminate one factor.

Based on the above, I'm suspecting it has something to do with either the
power adapter message (and the laptop is throttling back the CPU) or, even
worse, the motherboard itself. I searched on here for issues with the power
adapter, and it seems to point in this direction (though there were no
symptoms mention like the above). I recently had Dell fix the laptop for
another prob - to which they swapped out the mobo. Hopefully if it is
mobo-related, its covered under a new warranty.

Anyway, if anyone has experienced the above, or has thoughts about what it
could be, I'm all ears (or eyes in this case).

tia,

It might be the power adapter. If it is not supplying the laptop with enough power than the laptop will not work properly.

Reinstall Windows. It'll only take you an afternoon, and it will fix everything that isn't hardware related (which will probably sort your problem out).

replacement power supplies arent that expensive through dell. I would try that first. Mine just crapped out with the same symptoms and they replace it under warrenty. all is good. Dont bother trying flea bay as i hear of alot of problems with them. i would rather spend the money first than a complete reformat. If the new supply didnt work you could always send it back.

The power connector is a 3 contact design. Outer barrel, inner barrel and center pin. The center pin tells the laptop what sort of dell power supply it is, if the connector is not all the way in or the wire for the center pin is broken the laptop will not recognise the power supply as being the correct one, even if the power supply is supplyin g the correct voltage.

All great advice guys (its why these forums are invaluable). I'll definitely check the adapter connection first to see if the contact points are faulty at all. And the additional adapter/Windows reinstall are also options I've flirted with over the last 24 hours. Adapter is only $70, so its not as bad as I thought.

Thanks again - will update this thread with any new info/resolve (in case others have a need for this info in the future).

Don't bother reinstalling Windows. Sounds clearly like a power issue. If within a year, Dell will replace it free.

Yep - it looks like it might be the power adapter after all. I reseated the three pin end as per Kissarmy's suggestion, and lappy booted up without problems and am now getting 130fps in UT2004 as expected. CPU still seems to max at different points, but I'm probably running a bit sensitive to those numbers now. I will contact Dell about getting a replacement adapter as it seems the likely suspect at this point.

Thanks again guys.
