m675 wait is killing me!

Hey folks - noob here.

Quick snapshot: I ordered an m675CS on 1/19 and they gave me an "estimated arrival date" of 1/30 - tomorrow!

The problem is, Gateway's site tells you next to nothing about progress when you check your order status. Just yesterday, I checked the site and the status showed "Your Gateway order is being fulfilled in our manufacturing facility. Your estimated shipping date is 1/30/04."

So now it seems the order is only expected to SHIP tomorrow instead of to ARRIVE tomorrow.

I'm interested to know what other Gateway purchasers have experienced in terms of shipping times, and how long one should expect it to take from the point the machine ships to the time it reaches you in a continental U.S. location.

FYI - I ordered a customized cs version (3.2ghz, 1gb 400mhz RAM, 80gb HDD, etc.) They threw in free shipping, so I assume that will be the slow route, as opposed to next day air...

I ordered a stock M675XL on a Sunday (1/11) and received it on (1/14). According to UPS tracking, it shipped directly from their Tennessee facility. It slipped smoothly into my workflow, so I've been very happy so far.. The stock model had everything I needed and I figured I'd upgrade the RAM to a GB of the 400MHz type somewhere down the road...

OK - still waiting. Help me plan for its arrival?

Gee, thanks Romo for rubbing it in!

Well, I suppose that's what I get for doing a custom config.

ARGH! Today is 1/30 and the order status still shows that its being "fulfilled in manufacturing"! I guess it WON'T be shipping today... That's really too bad, I had built up some hope of possibly using it this weekend. Well, time to smash some more bananas in the meantime in the hope of a defect-free arrival!

As an aside, does anyone have any suggestions for what to do when the machine first arrives? This will be my first laptop purchase in over 10 years, so I'm a bit rusty. What things should I check for? Any particular programs I should run to confirm that I got what I ordered and it's running at an appropriate speed?

Sorry, for the salt on the wounds... it was a shock to me, seeing the tracking status switch the day after I had placed the order! If it makes you feel any better, I had originally been tracking the status on a ZD7000 order I had made around the 5th of the month which was supposed to ship on the 21st. Coincidentally, it arrived the same day as the 675 --- but was refused & sent back that same day...

When you do get yours.. I'd recommend the first thing you do is plug in the AC adapter to top the battery off, while you're orienting.. Always good to fully charge the battery first. You can run System Information in the Control Panel to verify your config.
Once you're online.. you can go to http://www.sisoftware.co.uk & download Sandra. In addition to the system info & benchmarking functions. It's got a good burn-in wizard to put your system through it's paces and make sure everything's working as expected. It's a good stress tester to weed out any potentially faulty components.

Speaking of waiting info the HP site is even worst ... says Order Approved - in progress ... WHAT thats it!! NOT even a shipping date (the guy told me approx. 3 weeks) .. i've been waiting for my HP NC8000 that I orded on the 16, yeah yeah only 14 days I know. But its a stock one so I guess its really popular .. oh I got 600$ Cad off too cause it was a special offer .... guess I pay in time instead of $$$

More waiting...

Ah crap! I just got a call from Gateway Customer Support. They said they've run into an "unexpected parts delay" on my order and that now they estimate the shipping date to be "anywhere between today and the 10th" of February. I can cancel the order at any time, but what good would that do?

Oh happy day - they offered to expedite my order and "bump up" the shipping so that it would arrive by "3 day Select"! Instead of what... the slow boat from China?

Anyway, please excuse my bitterness... and to think that I stepped out of waiting for the Sager 8790 thinking that this would be QUICKER! If this does go all the way to the 10th, and the 8790 comes out by then, I may have to step back into that line...

Thanks Romo for the tips. Maverick, I feel your pain!

I just got my M675XL Wednesday and let me tell you...it was well worth the wait. The "WOW" factor of this beast is incredible. Sometimes I like to just look at it. have owned several other lappies, but this one I am most proud of.

I had looked at going the "CS" route as well, but the latest "XL" configuration was right on, so I went that route. I have spent the last couple of days transferring/updating programs, etc. Once I get everything loaded and up to date, I plan on doing a back up so I can do a clean install whenever/if ever she starts slowing down. That is about all I can recommend.

Congrats on your new laptop, man. You are going to LOVE IT!!!

Hey Doug - thanks for the encouraging words. Your (and Romo's) XL systems look very nice! If I may ask, how long did it take from the time you placed your order?

Just emailed Gateway asking about their warranty and service issues regarding Int'l orders. I'd really rather have a Sager, but having to pay shipping to and from for any issues really irks me.

If Gateway has a better policy, they might have a customer. The Accidental Damage Program is a definitely plus over other companies, too.

Glad to hear that you're happy w/ your machine.

Coolwind, I also ordered a 675CS to hit my price point. This was after reading many of the great posts here (romo, BargainSeeker, etc), and also seeing one in person (so sweet).

The delay depends on what components you ordered. On Jan 17th, I ordered mine with 2.8GHz, 256MB 400MHz memory (to upgrade later), 128MB video, 17" screen (now standard), DVD (no burner), floppy, 30GB hd (to upgrade later), and wireless-g for about $1700.

It was originally scheduled to arrive on the 30th, but a week into it the date was replaced with a generic "delayed" message. After my "shakes" subsided, I sent an email to the rep who confirmed the original order, and she was able to find out that both the wireless-g and the 256MB 400MHz memory were delayed. The memory wasn't due until Feb 10th or so. I asked her to check out some other options for memory, and she was able to bump me up to 512MB 400MHz (single stick - in stock) for no extra charge. That upgrade would've cost $200 configuring online (yeah, ridiculous). I was impressed with the service, but final judgement waits until I actually receive it (est ship: Feb 5th). Man, I can't wait!

My 675x took less than a week to get to me, but I ordered with the default config.

Stark, if the 400mhz mem and the Wireless G were what held your order up, we're in the same boat. The person that called me from customer support could not identify specifically what the component was that was causing the holdup, but said that the high-end notebooks have been extremely popular and that they were running into parts shortages. Best wishes for a speedy delivery of your machine!

[Today's status: still "being fulfilled in manufacturing" - 2/10 expected ship date - argh!]
They were only out of stock on the 256MB sticks of 400 memory at the time I talked to my rep, but maybe their supply of 512MB sticks wasn't enough for the orders coming in to fulfill your 1GB.

The good news for me (which hopefully implies good news for you soon) is that the wireless came in and mine has been built and shipped and should arrive this week Now if I can just keep from staring at the UPS tracking screen, at least for an occasional meal...

I just recieved my 675cs and I am one happy MoFo. I have a coupe questions though. I baught it with the crappy memory and hard drive because I want to upgrade myself. What drive and ram would you recommend? Is ther any compatibility issues with any ram i should know about before i buy?

thanks

Stark Raving, how'd you customize the laptop? I can't seem to find the place where you can customize the laptop as much as, say, Dell let's you. Did you have to talk to someone in person?
Well, looking at the site today, I don't see the option for the wireless-g, but it was there quite recently on the second screen of the configuration (where the wireless routers are currently listed). A wireless router isn't quite as helpful without a wireless card, built-in or add-on, and I don't see an option for either at the moment. They seem to change the options quite regularly. Whether it's based on supplies or marketing, I don't know.

I did notice, however, that they now have a $100 rebate on the M675CS, and free shipping. I'm trying to get ahold of a rep to see if I can have that applied to my order, since I haven't received it yet. Fingers crossed on that one, but they've been very helpful thus far.

Other than the wireless, everything else was available in the configuration area, which starts at:
http://products.gateway.com/products...=m675cs&seg=hm

I found out from UPS that it's being shipped from China. There's not much tracking info until it hits the US I guess. Just "in transit". I was a little surprised no one mentioned the origin before. I expected it to come from South (North?) Dakota.

i believe their manufacturing plant or whatever is in tennessee. that's where mine came from.

Stark, man I envy you. I ordered on 1/19 and STILL it's showing as being fulfilled in manufacturing! If it truly comes from China, it'll be awhile before it reaches Oregon! Ah well, I'll just continue shopping for software I can finally run on this bad boy!

Arson: the popular suggestion seems to be Apacer PC3200 RAM. Make sure you get the right kind. According to others who have lived the experience, Geil memory causes problems. Check this thread for more info: http://notebookforums.com/showthread...5&page=2&pp=15

There's a user on this forum named Spork who's done the memory and drive upgrades - check for his posts. I believe just about any 2.5" notebook drive should work - most people seem to prefer the Hitachi 7200rpm series.

wutwjd: You can customize by selecting the m675cs model. This will let you pick everything from screen (15.4 vs 17") to memory, hard drive and video card. I advise you to double-check your config very carefully before placing the order. Also, if you want the free shipping or AAA discount, you'll need to save your config and either do an online chat with sales or call them with your config number. Happy Shopping!

6 days to go (so I'm told) for my m675cs!

Coolwind, I'm curious about the screen for the 675cs that you have on order. According to your equipment information line, the screen is a WSXGA+. Is this a new option that is available? I thought that the m675 only came with a WXGA screen, not the higher resolution WSXGA+ screen.

I too am waiting on one of those. My "estimated ship date" is 2/11.
