dell replacing my e1705 with ati x1400

ok well dell is replacing my current e1705 that has a nvidia 7800go witha ati x1400! i wanted to know if i should accept this or reject it?

Reject it. What is wrong with your E1705? The 7800go is a much much better vid card than the x1400. If you game at all, I wouldn't do it. If you don't game then all it will do it get you a little better battery life.

it is making a humming / buzzing type sound that they can not get rid of. they had me replace the heatsink and both fans and had me do numerous tests but still not figured out. i spent a lot of time to the point a sup said they would send replacement but i just noticed that the new system will have a ati card now!

I would hold on the replacement for now. you have at least a 1 year warranty right? Hold on for a few months when the 7900go is available. I wouldn't accept a x1400 DOWNGRADE unless they offered me $400 for it lol. Thay way I could turn around and buy either a 7800gtx now or a 7900gtx later.

i have another 3 years of warranty left. do you think they would notice if i just switched the video cards? i doubt they are going to give me any incentive as my e1705 was a replacement for an inspiron 9100 that they couldnt fix.

Or you could make sure you recieve the replacement first and then swap GPU's....lol

I recently had to have a hard drive swap for an XP client at work. The courier / engineer wants the other hard drive before he leaves.

Unless, you give the guy a coffee, speak nice to him, you may not get away with this.

(edit: the rails were not on the replacement drive and the guy was happy to wait until I swapped them)

thats what i was thinking about doing. i am complaining to them right now and they are telling me that the ati card is a better or equalivant card to what i have do you guys think they would notice if i switched the gpu? they will send me the replacement unit first and they i send the old one back. will this cause problems with the warranty later if something happens with the gpu?

In a situation like this I feel you would be fully entitled to swap the cards regardless.

You paid (or not, but in your possesion It's your PC), your return will probably end up in one of their refurbished stores.

As I told you in my PM I can send you my ATI you swap it with your 7800 when you get the "new" ATI swap it back to the 7800 and ship me the ATI and that's it. You can't lose there. just the shipping cost.

idk if this is gonna sound rude or not, but that is one dumb idea. he said he is going to receive the laptop then send in his.

You need to get a credit since the ATI is a downgrade. Guess they assumed that you didn't know the difference between the ATI and Nvidia. If you can hold off, as was pointed out in another post, that might be what you want to do so that you can get a replacement system with an equivalent or better card.

Yes, his/her current laptop has a GO7800. So this is taken out, and an ATI card is sent back (what it's being replaced with).

Then, install 'old' GO7800 back in new laptop ?

Am I missing something here ?

Yeah, I don't se how that is a bad idea at all? I would go for that, since the guy helping will get a new x1400(possibly a better OCer?) and the OP will get to keep his 7800go. I would do that if it were me.

Otherwise, just wait until the new gpu comes out(7900) and just get the replacement then. I can't believe they tried to tell you the x1400 is equivelant to the 7800go! That's a solid 2 steps down in the gpu hierarchy, which is a big difference in performance. Dell reps can be pretty damn stupid sometimes.

hears to Camride that read the post. Any way I am sick of this forum your triing to help some one and you get critisised when some don't get what you are triing to do.

So sad some time. I know my writhing is not the best "dixlecsic" but the general idie was there if he would not get the new laptop in time to change the VC.

after along chat session with dell the rep stated that he would note that i should receive the nvidia card installed in the machine, i asked if this would be possible as they didnt offer the card right now, he stated they would look into this and not to worry as i should receive the best configuration for that component. so when the replacement unit shows up hopefully it has the correct card otherwise i have have 2 options to either just swap the cards betweek the two laptops or call and complain and hopefully maybe the new card would be out so i can just have them upgrade me! I would wait on the laptop replacement but i have a feeling that if i tell them to cancel it that they wont bother to reprocess it if i were to call back when the new 7900 comes out. (getting a replacement is not an easy task) took me 4 hours being xter'd to different reps and finally speaking to a sup to make it happen. i will keep everyone updated when the new system arrives with what they send me. i thank everyone for your suggestions and help.

Ok well I received my replacement E1705 today and I have to say it is does not have a Nvidia 7800GO video card (as promised and assured) and the lcd is really bad! I can see dark spots in it and also there is a dead pixel!! (I had never seen one until today!) Well I have given up on complaining to dell so I will just swap the video card like others had suggested and I guess I will swap the lcd too since the old screen looks way better. Hopefully I wont have problems with the video card or having them replace it later since my paperworks states that I got an ATI card.
