Problem with new Dell E1505

I got my new E1505 in today and as much as I like the laptop I feel there is something wrong with it. There is a kind of electronic hissing sound coming from the back left part of the laptop. I really drives my ears kinda crazy. I took out the battery, ran it on battery, disabled the wireless, reinstalled wireless drivers but still have same problem. Does anyone else have an idea what this maybe? My screen is perfect with no light leakage so I'd really rather not return it but theres no way that i could ever get used to the hissing sound...

I hope this problem can be fixed. Battlefield 2 was playable even with all the bloatware and a gig of memory. I really like the computer but the buzzing is driving me insane...I'd appreciate any input to fixing this problem

ok well it does not make the screeching sound while in the bios... but as soon as its starts to boot up again it makes the sound. If any one has any ideas let me know, thanks

I didn't notice any noise on my e1505

but there's a similar problem with my old 700m.

I remember that, the way to solve it, is to disable some feature of the usb controllers. can't remember exactly.

you can try to search dell forum. good luck!

well i tried the disabling the power saving feature of the usb controllers but all this did was alter the pitch of the noise or silence the noise for a few seconds...

try disabling the fan, its back there. if it goes away, you just hear that

I don't think its the fan..it have to put my ear right to the fan to hear it running. I can here the high pitched whine from like 8-10 ft pretty easily. It also changes depending on what you click on.

I had the same problem. The sound was driving me nuts so I had to call service support tech from dell. My loud high pitch buzzing sound was coming from the memory panel. The tech told me to remove the hard drive, the memory, my usb mouse, the battery, and the ac adapter. Then she told to reinstall everything. After an hour and a half she concluded that the sound was coming from the hard drive. I told her the sound was coming from the memory panel and she insisted that it was the hard drive. I told her that I've read some information from the dell forums. I guess there were many others having the same problems with the high pitch sound. She then said that they were well aware of the problem and try to bare with the sound for 2 weeks and the sound from the hard drive would eventually go away. She was wrong! I've had the notebook for a week and the sound didn't seem to be getting better, it got worse. So then I left plenty emails about the problem and got no response. I've tried calling and they kept transferring me to dell support and finally I got pissed off and went to chat with dell's customer service online. One person left the conversion because I was responding too slow. I type around 33 w.p.m and I was trying to describe the problem with the notebook and the guy aborted the conversion. All I want to say is Dell's overall service with customers SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I finally talked to a nice customer service rep. and she gave me a rma number to return my dell E1505... No more Dell for me.

damn that sounds like bad news. I wonder if changing out the memory would make a difference..well i guess after i get through my con law exam tomorrow, and econ stats test the next day i'll have to see about sending it back to dell. This whole problem has been rather distracting, not to mention the instant headache the sound induces. I probably won't be giving up on dell though, the price/peformance is hard to beat.

edit: just saw your specs. I guess switching the ram is not going to help, I have 2x512mb of 533mhz ram

i have a E1505 and i have no hissing or high pitching sounds...

to my understanding, there are only a couple places that can make such sounds:
1. fans
2. hard drive
3. DVD-ROM
4. speakers

if my has it, i will demand an exhange immediately because
those sounds will drive me nuts !!!

I've noticed some strange high pitched noise from time to time on mine too - it's very very minor though and intermitent. Definitely not something I can hear from 10 or 12 feet away like you're reporting...

you guys aren't talking about a pretty quiet beeping sound are you? cuz i get that when i put a dvd into the dvd drive and it spins up...

no this sound would pretty surely drive a person insane after a while. I noticed mine on the first boot of the computer so I'm suspecting its a problem that came straight from dell.

My sound was pretty loud, but it went away for a little while when I unplugged the ac adapter, but then it came back and started hissing again. Luckily I was able to return it for a full refund with no restocking fees.

I'm trying a reformat before calling up dell. i'll post the result when i'm done. Doesn't seem to make the noise while formatting...maybe this is a good sign..

If disabling the power management on the usb ports do not help, I would say that the buzzing/high pitch sound you hear is because of a bad capacitor or voltage converter on the motherboard itself. This happens on other brands too, not only Dell. So in worst case it's a quality problem with the motherboard, and I would ask for a replacement. Buzzing sounds like that cannot be tolerated, it drives people crazy.

weird..the buzzing started when windows started installing the devices..I'll try the usb thing one more time once windows finishes installing

Yes, it can be the graphics driver or anything else that triggers the noise. I had a IBM ThinkPad with more or less the same problems you describe, and in the end I managed to reduce the noise by disabling flash on websites, run the cpu at low speed, and switching media player.

When I opened up the computer, the noise came from a voltage converter on the motherboard. The problems start to arise when Windows installs drivers for the devices, and thereby starts to interact with the devices more directly. In any case, the base problem for me was a a quality problem of the motherboard. And new reports say Apple users experience the same problem with their new MacBook Pro's.

Well dell insisted that the problem was the harddrive despite my best attempts to convince them otherwise...so I bought a hitachi 80gb 7200rpm sata drive and replaced the old drive. As most of you probably expected replacing the harddrive didn't make a bit of difference...still the high pitched sound that give me a headache in 2 minutes. I'm going to have a fun chat with dell here pretty soon. At least I have a good harddrive for whatever laptop I do end up getting to replace the e1505
