Need help on crackling sound

Well my wife's 17" powerbook G4 started to make a crackling sound. It sounds just like a speaker that is busted. But here's the thing it is coming exactly from the front left corner. I looked online for pictures of an open case powerbook and it seems that is where the harddrive is. But I have never heard of a harddrive that makes a sound like this. My wife said that for the last two weeks some programs have been hanging or just will not load up.

To be honest I only have heard of desktop harddrives going back so this is new to me. If anyone has had a bad harddrive problem can you please post if this sounds like it.

If I do have to buy a new laptop harddrive, can I just buy any 2.5 harddrive? And, do I need to buy a harddrive docking for it to fit in or will it fit into the 60 gig that is in there?

Sincerely

ElvisG

Explain crackle- statis sorta tihng? Warpping paper, plastic bag? Keep the top off and listen to the HD, see what noise it make (if you can). Load a program and see if the noise changes. If it does, then you should get a new one (or call apple and have a check).

Any 2.5" HD should work in you pbook, if you're getting one of the new ones (120 gig +) check it isnt too tall. It'll fit in the slot.

Sounds like a speaker that is busted but the sound is coming from the front left corner. I checked the speakers and they sound perfect cause I played an mp3. They only thing it could be in that area is the harddrvie.

So if I buy any hd that is smaller then 120 gigs then I don't need to buy any kind of hd casing for the new hd to fit in?

correct, there's is one 120 or 160GB 2.5" drive, the brand of which i can't remember offhand which has a 12.7mm height as opposed to the more universal 9.5mm drives. u want the 9.5mm option.

correct, but u will need an ATA drive and not the newer SATA ones. the mounting on them is universal so u'll just need to swap out the drive into the notebook's harddrive cage, which involve the rubber mounts. not difficult, just mentioned it to know what to look for. u'll need to take the pegs out form the old drive and screw them into the new one. the pegs sit in rubber tubes which provide shock dampening and allow the drive to "float" as opposed to being directly bolted to the logic board.

Yup, he's right. Folow that and ye'll be sorted. And hey, if you dont want that HD, feel free to send it my way (trying to rebuild a pc- it doesnt matter about performance or reliability, just needs to boot).

Thanks for all the help everyone, I'm going to wait until the harddrive fails or becomes so loud that she can't stand it and replace it. I would replace it now but it's my wife laptop.
