New built PC not starting up

Thread Starter
SO I just built a new PC.. I put it all together at my friends place and didnt put the GPU in because i forgot it at home. I started the PC up at his place and it powered up, all the vents were working and i opened the DVD-RW and it opened fine, so i figured its all working. I take it home, pop the GPU in, it powers up, but my DVD-RW wont open anymore, i conect it to my LCD and nothing shows up, its just blank. The PC is working, the mobo has the green light on...So it powers up, nothing shows up on LCD and DVD-RW doesnt open, i take GPU out power up and DVD-RW still wont open. I tried a friends GPU and same problem. Both GPUs i tried are AGP...Maybe my AGP Slot on the mobo is dead?

Specs:
CPU Pentium 4 530 3ghz
MOBO Asus Xtreme P5VD1-X
80GB HD 7200rpm
512mb ram

Still using a cheap PSU 500w that came with case. Its a cheap case, was like 90$ with PSU, its some european brand crap...

I would say unplug the dvd-rw put the vid card back in and try again. YOu might notice that it will turn on and your dvd-rw drive is fried...Maybe.

Test drive and video card in another computer.
Test memory in another computer.
Test power supply with tester or in another computer
If all goes well then your motherboard or cpu might be fried.

mobo gives me the green light so seems like power is going through and CPU is working...Maybe DVD is fried

Umm... quick questions.

What type of video card are you using?
Doest it require a Y molex adapter?

If you're gonna be using various devices like multiple HDs, optical units or a really powerful video card you can forget about using (the cheap) power supplies that usually come included with computer cases.

For that, you will need a real power supply.

By rights, it should of beeped when you first powered it up indicating "no video card".

Hint: It's always a good idea to have a spare PCI video card in your tool chest to see if the motherboard and CPU are working. Ebay has tons of them. From what you have described it doesn't look like the CPU is working if the BIOS POST screen isn't coming up but you can't tell for sure until you get a PCI video card.

When you turned the PC on at your frinds house, did it beep?

Do you have a PCI video card to test? Definitely could be a PSU problem.

I know many Asus boards have voice enabled so with the speakers connected you may hear the error message.

Thought all motherboards has a speaker on it. It doesnt look like a speaker, just a little round cylander thing.

make sure all cards, ram etc. are in good and snug...and if you have another psu try it

Does it have onboard Video ? if so, plug your monitor into that, you may have to disable it in the bios. It may have enabled itself on first boot when it found nothing in the agp slot. When I have this issue, I unplug everything, drives, extra pci cards. Just boot with video and ram and see if you get post ( power on self test ) if you get video, add one thing at a time till you find the issue. Almost forgot, there are 2 power connecters for the mainboard power, make sure both are connected.

G'luck
