My brief 4780 review

Thread Starter
I have had my 4780 for a few days now and thought it was time to drop my opinion.
Build: Best quality build of any lappy i've owned--had a couple Dells and the 5680.

Screen: Very large and very nice--this thing has a lot of real estate. I notice less ghosting with this than on the 5680 and Dell 8500 w/ sxga. The angles aren't as good as the 5680 however. One big stuck white pixel--maybe I shd name it like Al did his.
When opening the lappy you must hold the bottom side down to keep from pulling the whole thing up--no big deal.

Keyboard: The best laptop keyboard I've ever typed on. Very firm with no give underneath. Touchpad--very responsive--better than Dell.

Heat: Left side gets warm as is well documented, but is not scalding--this after a couple hours of BF42.

Speed: Excellent, but not quite as fast as 5680 imo--had same config--might be dual channel. Still plenty fast.

Sound: Very nice--better than 5680 and most others I have heard.

Gaming: Just as smooth as the 5680--stretching not very noticeable or bothersome.

Camera: Just as everyone else said--very poor in avg light.

Fans: Very quiet and not on most of the time unless gaming. Seems to have two speeds--high and low, but high isn't nearly as bad as anticipated. I would say it is not as loud as the 5680 fans(would wake me if I left it on at night).

Overall: I like it, however, the pixel is an eyesore. I will wait to see how it grows on me before making any rash decisions. Almost made one yesterday on dell 8600, but decided to give it some more time--who knows the 8790 might appear one day.

Hi cddd543,

Thanks for your review, as it covers all of the aspects that are important!

One question though: Did you ever consider the Gateway M675 before purchasing the 4780? If so, what was the deciding factor that led you to go with the 4780 over the Gateway?

Thanks!

More expensive--can't configure it yourself(that I could find). No 7200 rpm hd--ram slower I think. Plus I had read negative comments about Gateway laptops. Didn't give them much thought beyond that.
