Ext. harddisk access over WiFi?

This may strike many as a dumb question, but can I access my three external harddrives over WiFi? I only have two usb ports on my laptop, but I have a WiFi router with additional ones. So I thought if it worked it would be great. I have tried using a USB hub, but find the transfer speeds drop to ridiculous levels. It only works effectively for the mouse and external keyboards.

If not, is there such a thing as a bluetooth router, that allows you to plug in external utilities and have wireless access?

If any of the two above works, how would you control unauthorized access?

Thanks

Generally the usb ports on WiFi routers are for use as a printserver, have never heard of someone accessing an external hd through them.

They do make network storage drives but I have yet to see a router support network USB drive access.

You need an old desktop to put a USB 2.0 card in it (or just install the drives in the box, that could provide even more efficent access) and put it on your network wired into the router. Then you can just map drives over your network to the other PC.

BTW Even if you could rig up something over Bluetooth it would be painfully slow. BT is not the best option. It sounds like you may have a kinda shitty USB hub. If you can't go the route of another PC try a different hub.

I have a friend who has three of those USB attached storage devices. As far as he's told me is that those are solid as anything.

You just need an external enclosure with the appropriate cable input. hook it straight into your router.
