Hate to be a noob here, but I am just curious as to finding if there are any upgrades I can perform directly on my 8100. I am sure stuff is underway, but one thing that has always bothered me was the time it takes for the hard drive to load stuff up.

Seeing here now that there is way more that can be done to these systems, I would like to see what all is available that can be done to my 8100, or I might just buy the XPS. Would like to play with the 8100 though first!

Yep, download the i8600 service manual, instructions are contained within.

You can sometimes oc the video card, but not the processor (but can change it)

Yeah, video can be overclocked through drivers and other software. However CPU and RAM cannot be as Dell locks the BIOS. This is a good idea, trust me, its not the best idea to go overclocking crazy in a laptop.

My main question would be exactly how high can we upgrade (change) the cpu to? Dothan 2.0ghz? or even higher Dothan chips... In other words, how high can the i8600 Motherboard go.
The fastest chip that will be able to go into the i8600 is the 2.0GHz Dothan that is available right now. The i8600 will not support the next generation mobile processor because they will have a 533MHz FSB.
when are those coming out? lemme guess, "when it's done" right? hehehe, like halflife2: "Half Life 2 will come out on September 30th, and you can quote me on that." -Gabe Newell ...hahah, that is the best quote ever.

Unconfirmed report have said the new processors will be delayed, but keep in mind that they're just unconfirmed reports.

The hardest part about knowing things that can get people in trouble, is not being able to blurt them out for the edification of everybody......

Suffice it to say, I bought the 755 and opted not to wait.
Doesn't matter for us anyway. As mentioned the new ones will run on a 533MHz system bus and will require a new chipset. The 2.0GHz Pentium-M 755 that is out at the moment will be the last stop for passengers on the i8600/ 600m line.

It may not matter for the current I8600 owners, but Humble Pie does have a valid point for people who are debating whether to buy now or to wait. Considering all the more-or-less-believable rumours, I have also decided to opt for 755, since Dell's mobile platform is unlikely to get significant upgrades till the end of this year.
