What is your own personal opinion of the XPSM140?

I am really convinced and set on buying this one, after my 700m got stolen in France last year along with my luggage, but thats another story. The 710m even with many discounts is well over $1000 with my configurations and I bought my previous 700m at only $880 shipped. So I thought about it and click Compare All Notebooks. I was set on either the E1505, but as I saw the close to 7-pound frame and th eprice going drastically high as I added my configs. I started to look the other way. Then I looked into the XPS category for fun and saw the M140 weighing in a a little more than 5 pounds, the lightest next to the 700m. I was pretty impressed as I read the specs and it seemed like a good laptop. The Dell Media Direct, Intel Extreme Graphics were fine with me, this wasn't a gaming platform .I spend the last month building up my own little monster of a desktop (AMD Athlon x64 4200+ x2, Asus A8N-32SLI, nVidia 7800 GTX 256, 300GB 7200RPM Seagate, and more), the last thing I needed was the XPSM170, there was already a crater the size of the moon in my wallet. Besides, the thing would be too heavy for me to lug around the world whenever I traveled. I've been travelling with my 8-10 yr. old Inspiron which weighs in at 10 and it's been hell. So I loaded it up with what I need applied my 10% and the price was just a bit over $1,000 which set exactly to what I could afford. Anyways, with what I'm using it for (not EXTREMMEMEMEEEE gaming, but the occasional CS, Sims), while on the road some video editing and burning whats on my camcorder, surfing the web, showing relatives overseas photos, videos, listening to some music, is this the 'top for me?

sorry for the long read.

I just got mine and i love it, really feels like a high end pc with out the dedicated graphics card but the intel gma900 is not that bad if your not a hardcore gamer...

I originally got the XPS M140 but did a return after two days because of build issues. I bought the 710M instead. To my mind, if you were lucky enough to get an XPS M140 without the usual issues that plague the machine then it's a keeper, since you will have a newer processor and all the bells and whistles (i.e., features like instant on, MCE, size and weight), plus the long lasting battery. But I still think that the 710M is a better machine for the traveller or student if you talk about portability.

I'm very happy with my M140. My opinion on the build issues is that it's hit or miss, and I think they were some of the earlier models that shipped. Like the reed switch problem, you don't hear about that one anymore. I got mine at the end of January and couldn't be more pleased with it. I was lucky not to get a bad screen, so for me, there have been no problems whatsoever. Granted, the GPU is integrated, but gaming for me is a bonus anyways, and this thing can handle the majority of games out there just fine. People bash this thing because there's no discrete GPU but, hey, playing intensive 3D games 10 hours a day wasn't what I had in mind when I bought it. It's not as light as the 700, but then you already know that. So in conclusion, based on your needs, you should be pretty happy with this system, I am.

I love mine, makes a great lightweight companion for my e1705. Runs WoW suprisingly well. I get about 3.5 hours on the 6 cell, awaiting the 9 cell battery.

I know nothing about the machine as far as use goes, but my own personal opinion (hee hee, you should have worded your title different) is that it is not worthy of the XPS branding. When it came out, I was like 'sweet! a cheaper smaller gaming machine!' only to find that it's just cheaper and smaller, not a gaming machine. It should be called like 800m instead.

I've purchased 3 over the past 3 weeks... I haven't found any other laptop so far that matches the M140 price and performance. Right now with all the sales to make space for the new models, I think its a good bang for your buck. While I'm using an XPS Gen2, the M140 is perfect for my wife, mom and dad to surf, light game and take around on trips.

Just my .02.

Great student laptop. Just the right size, excellent battery life (even on the 6 cell) and good enough for light gaming.
