Airplane use

I am going to be flying from VA to CA soon. Luckily, all the large planes I'm flying have power for laptops in all seats . however, since the fans are in the bottom of the case, is there any recommended way of holding or supporting the 8887-x so that the fans get air? I am not sure if the food trays can hold the "desktop"

Thanks

Well, get there an extra hour early for them to pat you down, run tests on your laptop, full body cavity search, etc... Every time I've flown w/ my 8886 I've been molested to no end by the security folks. But hey, they're just doing their job and you have to admit, the 888x is certainly worth gawking at if all you ever normally see are Dells and Toshibas....

But yeah, unless your in first class, the 888x will NOT fit very well on the tray table--especially if the @#$% in front of you reclines their chair (it's too tall w/ the screen flipped up). Use a thick magazine. I use that plasic usb cooler thing w/ the 3 fans that you can get a newegg.com for $17 bucks. It works great in the car too. You don't want it on your lap b/c of both the heat (which isn't really that bad) and the fact that you'll be stifling the fans.

Do this

Get on board and ask the stewardess for a serving tray. I've done this when i carried my PDA, Discman, Michael Crichton Prey all at once

I placed the tray upon the food tray but I dont think you can do this because the LCD will not open fully - especially if, like investorguy said - the guy in front turns out to be a jerk.

[u]BEST OPTION :

Go there early and get the seat by the emergency door - window mind you. This way no leaker asks you to get your stuff out of the way just because he wants to reach the aisle.

One you are there the seats dont recline so the guy in front wont have a prayer if disturbing you is his intention

Then all you need to do is find a pretty stewardess and get her tray...

Best of luck!!!

emergency row

yeah, i might do that.... i have to check out that usb cooler too, maybe both! another nice thing about emergency row seating is you get more legroom! I couldnt remember though if Emergency row seats had food trays.

By the way the airplanes power ourput does NOT support the 8887 laptop. The watts are too low on the plane . If you do use a airplane adapter you might run the risk of overheating and damaging your 8887 system!!!

Is this legit? Has anyone else heard about this? Please let me know one of the reasons i ordered a laptop was for my business trips.

I've never gotten a chance to use it, but all the signs said it was a standard DC port (like on a car). I have an AC/DC adapter--not the all-in-one thing that PCTorque sells, but a brick w/ a plug in. Everything gets hot when I use it, but not in a scary way. I assume it'd be enough of a buffer to keep away any problems, but I honestly don't know....

He may have a point there

the 5660 and 8887 use 90 watt supplies. I think the airplane supply is only 75w!!

In this case worse than damaging your 8887 you might take the plane down.... hee hee just kidding...

ask beebster - he might know - I remember vaguely that the same topic came up somewhere else - trouble is the forums is so huge now that its hard to keep things streamlined...

wattage

so far, what i had read said the power supply in an airplane is sufficient to keep it running, but not charge the battery. i dont think you can fry a laptop by supplying not enough juice to it, i mean, it can still draw from the battery if it needs to.

I just talked with a lady at Powernotebooks and she said they have received no complaints about the airline adapters they sell for the 8887. although she didnt know about the supplied power.. she said if it was too low it would just drain your battery more slowly if at all, so you would get longer life with it in. it wouldn't hurt it

Hey Ayefly!

When the pin is pulled, Mr. Grenade is not our friend.

Did you hear that they caught someone in Gatwick airport (UK) today. Seems some nut wanted to smuggle a grenade on to a plane in his hand baggage!!!

those posts said either you cant use the car charger on an airplane without an adapter. or that you cant run the laptop and have the battery charge.

no experiences with people actually using one on an airplane.

however, i will test it out March 1st when i fly to CA from VA

Also do this !! V.Imp !!

CARRY A PARACHUTE!!! HA HA HA

Couldnt resist!!

Let us know how it works out...

still confused

after reading all these posts....i still dont get if you can use it on a plane or not...lol.....i have the 8886....is it possible for me to use it???i might be going on a flight in april and i just want to make sure..thanx
post #15 of 31

Its not possible

Not happening.

Unless airlines bring in 90W supplies (Highly unlikely unless they divert power from the engines and airconditioning to your Sager)..you will not be able to use your Sager in an aircraft longer than the Battery will allow.

I dont know how far it will help by underclocking CPU and GPU to the lowest possible setting, dimming the screen to the bare minimum and removing all disks from the drives. Now you may plug in the 75W supply but I doubt it will have any big effect on how long you can use your battery.

I will be flying on a 6 hr flight to London sometime in May - unless someone tries before then I guess I will do the experiment and post the results

Cheers!!

but would it just be the way other people said it....it probably wont charge it....but it also probably not use batteries either???

battery time

I think it will run it without charging the battery, however, I am not positive. I am flying from VA to CA this thursday... so i will find out then and let everyone know how it goes.

did it work ayefly??

Yeah, I'm interested in how the flight went too avefly...Also, i've read a couple people say that their laptop gets hotter when they use the airplane for power...can anyone explain why if the plane is under-powering the notebook, it overheats?
This may or may not be relevant, but if you are planning to use your laptop on the plane you should know that some airlines use proprietary power hookups. I got the airplane power adapted from Powernotebooks with my 8886, and while it was great for powering the laptop from the car while camping, it was useless on a transatlantic BA flight. They wanted to charge me 90 pounds for an adapter. (they will not lend you one. I tried)

The plug looked like nothing I have seen, so it is probably designed so that you have to buy their adapter.

Just curious - what airlines do you know of that have inflight laptop power, and how many of them do NOT have this proprietary power limitation?
