I don't understand why some laptops, like the T60P, take 3-6 weeks to ship??? That's ridiculous. Dell usually ships within a week.

It's usually due to supply of one component in the system. When you configure a Dell, you'll sometimes get warnings that say...This option could delay the delivery of your order...or something of that nature. But you're right, Dell doesn't seem to suffer these issues like some other PC makers.

They took so long to deliver because they got limited number of available thinkpads or they need to go through some customs procedure. Buy from the retail a bit expensive but at least you can cash and carry and not sit there and wait for your thinkpad to be shipped. Sometimes, when the thinkpad arrived, there might be some damages and if you want to change, it took another few more weeks for that thinkpad to come back to you.

as a new a zew z60m owner and a former dell owner i can say the following
1. the 3-6 week waiting term has nothing to do with the customs.
IBM\Lenovo are just not as good with thier laptop, Dell have it all ready to ship, Lenovo does not, they have parts shortages, building a machine is not as efficient as it can be and it seems that thier procedures are not as advanced as dell. they even took a week vacation on the new years (chineese) when my computer was 8 weeks late....The WORST part is that the web team has no clue about what is going on stock wise in their assembly line and even the phone reps that will answer you have no clue what is going on.
2. the transition from IBM to Lenovo created some customs problems that can take up to TWO months if you are extreemly unlucky (by this time its no longer than a week and mostly a few days) note that your warranty starts when they laptop ships from china so if your computer is stuck in customs you loose bigtime.
basicly it all comes down to bad management i guess.
