First, tell us what you have in your system right now and how much you are looking to spend (in USD$)

best card available for that laptop is the ATI mobility Radeon 9000 which is a 128 mb card. It was never offered for the 8500 but for the 8600, however, many users sucessfully upgraded to the radeon with no major hitches on the 8500.

The 8500 is still a decent machine, but the video card really shows it age these days. The 9000 is not a whole lot better considering the current state of computers, but is still a considerable upgrade to the 4200 go

It's not the ati 9000 but the 128 MB ati 9600 PRO. It's a pretty outdated card nowadays, dont know if it would be a good enough upgrade.

the 9600 would be a nice upgrade over the 4200.
