Please Help! Display Problem!

My 8890V is about 11 months old now. Worked perfectly until today. The display began to blink slowly: Like at first, it would go black and then spring back to life again after about 20 seconds. The next time it happened, about a minute later, I noticed that the screen wasn't totally black; if I squinted, I could just barely make out the Windows on the screen, as if someone had turned the "brightness" way down. While it was dark like this, I could still click away, and the computer would run ok. Then it would spring back to normal. Over an hour or so, while I tried System Restore and GoBack software to see if this would help, the flickering increased in frequency and progressively lasted for shorter periods. Now, it goes from normal to dark to normal again about every five seconds. Moreover, now when it comes back to normal, it flickers real fast for about 5 seconds. I also tried rebooting and changing the refresh rate, with no effect. It is beginning to scare me. Anticipating a potential problem, I quickly tried to back up on CD-R my most important work files. Halfway into putting the files onto the E: drive for writing, I get a Windows Explorer error and it shuts down the copying process. Thought it might be a coaster problem, but got the same result from another blank CD-R. I am not very tech-savvy, but will take advice and try anything at this point. Sorry for the long dissertation, but I figured the more details given, the better chance at a diagnosis. Oh yeah, I haven't updated BIOS or drivers since getting the computer. Why ? 1)Never needed to. 2)Didn't want to mess with a perfectly-running machine and risk screwing it up royal. Thanks for caring and thanks for any thoughts you can offer.

Here's a new development: I ran it on battery power for an hour without the screen going dark... Then, with 3 min of battery power left, I got the usual "Hook up to AC power soon, battery critical..." message. At that time, the screen dimmed again and when I popped the AC adapter on, the screen brightened up. Do you think that I have a loose connection inside from battery (or AC inlet) to motherboard that makes the MB erroneously think I don't have any juice? A short circuit might make it flicker from hibernate to normal and back again. Any thoughts? Does the screen going nearly black sound like hibernation to you? As in "inappropriate hibernation", flickering back and forth to normal power? If yes, then, what do I do to correct this? I have the power save option to "Always On" or something like that. Thanks for your help!

1st thing to try is to unplug the power adapter, then remove the battery. Put the battery back in, and insert the power adapter and reboot. However the display / CPU resets itself.

Whatever you do make sure you get it fixed before the warranty turns over...

Rig, not to pick nits, but how can you have an 11 month old 8890V? Mine is only 6 months old and I was in the first batch!

his about must be VERY approximate. Or else he has an 8887

I had a few flickering problems, but never to the that extent. If it ever starts flickering, I turn the brightness down then back up and it seems to help. As for your problem, I haven't got a clue. But it doesn't sound like there's a short in the AC Power. That's what I thought mine was (and may still be), but even so, it wouldn't go *that* dark.

Have you tried hooking up a CRT? You may be able to backup stuff that way. I suppose it could be a driver problem - conflict with something you've recently installed etc. Try the lastest drivers from Sagers site. Other than that, I'm stumped.

Screen flicker could be caused by the backlight going out. I would get on the phone with Sager.

CD burning - I would kill all unnessecary services and try again. Could be something as simple as your anti-virus scanning every file before it tries to copy.

Arghh! I hate that. Try it with a CRT first - I believe (could be wrong), when you swap to CRT it disables (or you can set it to) the LCD. Could indicate driver issues.

Oh yeah, 8887. My bad. Heheh. Let me try some simple maneuvers and then I'll repost when I can. Thanks for all the input. BTW, how do you adjust brightness again? I can't seem to find either a slider wheel or a software app to do this.

Same problem

I am having the same problem... well a little different. My screen (8887 also) has gone completely dim. No flickering, no problems with it until yesterday. I've tried to reinstall drivers (it's hard to do when you really can't see what you are doing!!!) but nothing has changed. Unfortunately I am in London right now which makes it difficult to contact Sager, and I don't have access to a CRT. If anyone has any suggestions please post.

I have an 8890, but I think it's the same on an 8887. Fn + F9/F10

Thanks. I tried reinserting the battery, with no resolution of the problem. I found a brightness slider in the ATI Video Card options under Dsiplay>Properties... Again, no effect. I do use it nearly exclusively with the battery in place, but on AC power.. Is this not good for the battery, then? They should say that somewhere...?

Well, in addition to the above, I tried reinstalling the latest ATI driver. Didn't work. I also took out the battery and ran it off AC power alone, thinking I may have a bad cell. Again, didn't work. I called Sager for help. I think it's beyond my capability to fix at home, unfortunately. Thanks for all the thoughts. -Rig

I dont know how people figure the flickering problem is software related. It seems odd that a lot of owners start having flickering problems after owning a Sager for awhile. I have a Sager 8887 and it flickers when it wants to and when it does it is hell. I do notice when it flickers i see a lot more heat coming from the back but flickering happens. I am a very novice computer user and tech and I have installed a clean OS with just drivers and still flickers when it wants to regardless of what tricks I do to make it stop.
HEHE I remeber when it first started just a flicker here and a flicker there. Now it flickers liek mad and drives me nuts but it stops eventually.

Just my 2 cents

Well i justed wanted to add one last thing to this post. Today is 02/11/04 and my notebook Sager 8887 16.1 UXGA screen has bit the bullet. The blinking problem with the screen flashing all black has been giving me headaches for about 8 months (Trust me it gets worst and worst). Sure it will go away after awhile but I am here to tell you that it goes from black to white now. Now my screen is all white flashing and it is not my OS causing it cause it even does it in while trying to go to the system BIOS. Well since then my notebook is no longer a notebook since i have to hook up a monitor to it now to use it now. So anyone experiencing this problem i am giving you fair warning that it gets worst not better.

Great machine but sucks for me since I am one of many having LCD screen blinking.....bllinking.....blinking....then white. If you dont see blinking white yet give it time o yeah my warranty expired so RMA is no longer solution for me but not too late for the rest of you.

Even without a warranty, I'm sure you can still get it fixed - it'll just cost you money. Gotta decide whether having a laptop again is worth the extra $$$. I couldn't live with having to hook up a CRT.

What it probably cost me to fix this dam notebook I am better off buying a 17 inch Lcd for 450$ that is exactly what i did. I mean i like my Sager but i put good money into something I expext to last a year without a RMA but o well i learn my lesson. Great machine dont get me wrong all but I refuse to put any more money into this machine.
