Can someone PLEASE insert a I6400 (X1400) into a I6000!? - Page 3

I'll definately be keeping an eye on this. If I could get a BIOS editor, I'd do the BIOS work myself to get the x1400 in my i6kD.

What kind of 3dmark scores are you getting after overclocking the x1400? Also, what are you using to OC? I thought most of the usual tools didn't work.

Where can you get a BIOS editor from and what sort of work needs to be done for the BIOS to detect the card? I would like to give it a shot (even though I have never done this before).

I just overclocked my x300 last night and I was able to run all games in a higher resolution (taking up the entire screen). I think the x1400 would be just enough more to get thos games running like butter.

The bad news is the BIOS of the I6000 will not recognize it, which is what I figured since teh x1400 wasn't created until after the I6000 was made, which means they had no knowledge of it when it was made(or knew it'd never go in the I6000). Which means that you will need a BIOS hack to get it to work. If I knew anything about it I'd do it myself, but I don't know the first thing about BIOS code or how to work/modify it. So, at the very least you know there is absolutely no physical modification necessary to get it to work, the cards are on the same piece of PCB, just with different stuff on them(the layout is different). The heatpipe is also the same.

So I hope this helps you guys out. Find someone that knows BIOS hacking and have them whip you up a custom BIOS with the gpu info for the x1400 and all the rest of the data from the I6000.

For anyone wanting to do this mod, good luck! I'm sure with some diligent work you can find someone on the net that will do the BIOS hack for you.

Camride, what exactly happened when you booted up w/ the system? Did the computer POST, did you see nothing at all?

There are a couple guys on another forum that may be able to help, but they needed some more information first.

Thanks!

yeah i tired oblivion the other dayand it was barely playable at the lowest settings

Well, the most recent chat session with Dell uncovered that there are no plans to update the I6000 BIOS to recognize the x1400, so it is now left up to the BIOS knowlegable online.

Does anyone want to take a stab at this???

Yeah, that's no surprise. There has to be a BIOS guru somewhere.

OK, so what would happened if I flashed the Inspiron 6000 with the BIOS from the Inspiron 6400?

not compatible hardware.......but be my guest
post #51 of 234
what hardware is not compatible?? the chipset from the 6400 still supports single core processors?

If I did flash it and things end up not working, can I just go back to the I6000 BIOS?

I'm just asking, btw...I'm not trying to get shitty.

if the bios lets you do it you probably will be buying a new mother board.

Would completecare work in this case?

the chipsets used in the I6000 is older than the one in the I6400
post #55 of 234
I don't think completecare would work since that's for physical damage I believe. Don't quote me on that though.
i hope someone would try it, i would love a better gpu, but the x300 is nice by it's self already
post #57 of 234
Not nice enough for Oblivion.

Ok, as for what happened when I stuck it in, the laptop actually powered up and started to boot, but absolutely nothing showed on the screen. It didn't light up or anything, but I could see the HD light going and hear the normal boot up sounds. So, my guess is the signal was not going through the x1400 to the display since it wasn't recognized. What I should have done was hook up an external monitor and see if that worked, since the external monitor isn't directly hooked up to the video card. Not sure if that would have made any difference, but it might have(damn hindsight).

Anyway, you DO NOT want to flash a I6000 with the E1505 BIOS, the motherboards are completely different so nothing would work right except maybe the vid card! You really don't want to do that, the chance of you being able to go back and put your old BIOS on there would be slim to none. So you'd be buying a new MB. But anyone that knows how to hack a BIOS should be able to do this without too much trouble. I'd learn how to do it if I wasn't getting married in a month, I just don't have the time.

As far as the x1400 being a worthy upgrade or not, I say it most certainly is! Not only does the x1400 support alot more stuff like open GL 2.0, HDR, SM3, AVIVO and a few other small things but the clocks are MUCH higher. I mean stock to stock you're looking at a 500-600 point increase in 3DMark05! That's no small feat. The x1400 is an excellent gpu for the price, and I for one am very happy with mine. Considering that the price for the x1400 is actually less from spare parts than the upgrade is($95 from spare, $149 or $179 as an upgrade I believe) it's more than worth it, even for a E1505 owner with a x1300.

So, we need someone to step up here and get this BIOS hack going. Who is good at programming and will spend the time to do this? We need someone to help us out here! I seriously would do it but for the wedding. If it doesn't happen by mid-June then I will take it over and do it once I'm back from my honeymoon.

aww you got a whole month until you get married! that should be plenty of time!!

lol j/k, congrats
Hehe, you're obviously not married! The month before is the worst, the planning gets insane and you start pulling your hair out trying to get everything organized. The more guests coming from out of town=more lost hair. I'm excited though, we've been together for over 5 years so it's about time. We wanted to be married about 2 years ago but a few things got in the way like finances and my crappy ass health. But we're finally ready now!
