able to access some sites but not others??

hi,
I have a netgear DG834g router with AOL. With my old toshiba laptop I had no problems accessing anything. When I first got my sony vaio FE, connection continued to be fine. However, the last couple of weeks the machine has started not loading a number of sites- fanfiction.net is one example; microsoft is difficult too. Thing is, I'm certain it's nothing to do with my AV/firewall/browser settings since I was able to connect to all sites via dial up!

I've tried reinstalling the drivers for the router and there's no difference- I'm still unable to access those sites. I don't even get a time out message- it simply acts as if it's loading the page, and then it (may) say done- but it's a blank page! The headers/ titles of fanfiction.net load, but nothing else.

Any ideas? I've read something about DNS settings???

Get a command prompt open and type "ipconfig /flushdns" without quotes. Then try again.

Tried that- no luck. Also installed and ran the winsock xp fix. Incidentally, I can't connect on hotmail either.

I think my parents may have a spare adsl modem. If all else fails I could hook up to it for those sites. I considered doing a clean install, but since I know that it's not a fault with my computer settings- otherwise i'd have the same prob through dialup- that seems like overkill.

Any other suggestions? Connecting through wired ethernet via the router is just as problematic.

Have you tried connecting directly, without using the router? It might help to isolate the problem on the router.

some routers (read: cheap home routers like ours) have problems when you use it as DNS "repeater" (I use that word, but it may not be the technical one). See my example: I have an extermely good router here, imo (Linksys WRT54G), but I noticed that if my ADSL connection stop for some time (maintenance), when it returns, the router may show some problems resolving DNS names. Normally, what I do is to use, as DNS servers, the ones offered by my ADSL provider, and not the router address (192.168.0.1).

Anyway, that happened when I was using the Linksys firmware. After I installed OpenWrt on it, that problem never happened again, go figure...

ps.: if you do what Shepoch said, and it works, it may be exactly that, since you will be connecting directly to the internet, and using your provider DNS addresses.
