Well guys.. I suggest you read the following extract from Dell's website before buying a laptop!! ... I'm PISSED at Dell!!

ExpressCard FAQs

I cannot get my PC card to fit into this new system. Why is that?
If your system is one of those listed below (see answer to next FAQ), its slots feature ExpressCard technology rather than the previous generation PC Card technology, and such slots will not accept PC cards. ExpressCard is the technology generally featured on notebooks using Intel's Core Duo and Core Solo processors. We expect that over the course of 2006 more ExpressCard peripherals will become available to replace your old PC Card peripherals.

What systems do not support existing PC card technology?

The following systems launched from Dell do not support PC Card Technology

Inspiron E1705
Inspiron 9400
Inspiron 630m
XPS M140
Inspiron B120
Inspiron B130
Inspiron 1300
When will ExpressCard Mobile Broadband cards be available from Dell?
We do not anticipate seeing mobile broadband ExpressCards available in market until later in 2006.

Dell plans to launch the Dell Wireless 5700 EVDO ExpressCard for use on the Verizon Wireless network around May/June.
Dell plans to launch the Dell Wireless 5510 3G HSDPA ExpressCard for use on the Cingular network in August/September

You can't expect Dell or any other company to support old technology on new laptops. And it's not like they hide the fact that the laptop use ExpressCard. Hell, it's like getting pissed that you can't use PS/2 mice and keyboards, parallel printers and that 486 chip I got lying about...

Old Technology ? I would consider it old when there are ExpressCards out in the market at an affordable price...

Having an ExpressCard Slot right now is like owning a Blu-Ray Disc Player!!

Yes, but still. you can't blame dell because you ordered a laptop and didn't do your research. No where did they promise you a PCMCIA slot. And in all the documentation it says it uses ExpressCard. I'm sorry you can't use your card, but don't blame dell. They are trying to make thier laptops last longer by putting newer technology in it.

i admit its weird for dell to not use pcmcia, but at the same time, i feel you should've looked into whether it could support your card...

I find this changeover pretty annoying. I've got a PCMCIA hybrid tv hard in my 9300. What do i do with it when i upgrade? I havent seen any USB->PCMCIA adaptors around. PCMCIA is fine, why do we need to change to 'expresscard'?

Expresscard is probably faster.

Thus, it's the same reason why we changed from AGP to PCI-e, it's just better.

Megaphat, referencing the "car charger" in your signature, do you have an actual car charger for your laptop, or is it just a converter?

It's unfortunate that express card slots are not backwards compatible, but the companies need to make the move at some point - Dell can't wait for companies to start producing express cards because they won't do that until there are express card slots on the market.

Here are some pics of new express cards , (EDIT: oops had 7900go on the mind)including AverMedia TV tuners , although they don’t seem to be out yet

Anyone notice the pci express card logo looks like a bunny taking a dump

These pics look like more than concepts so there is hope for the future (maybe)
Hope this helps to quell some fear about getting new systems

That's not PCI-E. That's ExpressCard. Two completely different things

Tried google? typing in those two words brings up a huge number of results...

As for why, well, same reason as everything else, faster is better...

I agree, it was my negligence to not have known this beforehand... But certain things, like this.. USB ports and such.. are *usually* assumed to be what they are [does that even make sense ] .. I mean, it really never occured to me to look into what kinda PC Card slot it'll have...

Anywho, I'm sending it back tomorrow.. and Dell wants me to pay shipping ... oh well.. So much for an XPS.. They offered me another $50 off to keep it, but it was a no go..

Might want to edit that last post.

Why did they make 2 types of express cards? You got the one that is almost half the size of a PCMCIA one and then one that looks like an amputee PCMCIA card but its express.

Weird.
