hard disk or controller problems

Thread Starter
I have a Sager notebook computer (2300) that has recently developed some sort of hard disk problem. Since I'm not a technical expert in such matters, my description of the problem will be a little non-tech.

When attempting to boot (Windows 98) the disk will make some unusual clunking noises, as if the head is reseting or parking itself. This goes on for quite some time with the ultimate result being a "Disk not found" or "Insert disk.." type error. Other attempts have proved successful in booting up and I've managed to save important data. After boot up, the disk seems OK (Scan disk shows no errors).

My questions:

1) Does this seem like a controller problem? If so, how hard is it likely to be to replace the controller? (My understanding is that it's a chip on the motherboard.)

2) Are there any diagnostic (software) tools I can use to find out what's wrong. I'd hate to replace the hard drive only to find the problem still exists.

Sounds like a bad sector to me. I recommend getting Spinrite from Gibson research to see if can identify what is going on, http://grc.com.

Note, Spinrite only works on partitions that are fat based, so if you have NTFS partitions, it can't work on those.

I would RMA the drive back to sager and get it replaced. I had problems with mine also got controller errors in windows. The drive is a toshiba and with the luck toshiba's been having you might have gotten a questionable drive.

After having had a few hard drive crashes, I can say that it is definately time to back-up anything you want to keep. Once they start that they can go at any time. If it is still under warranty, send it in. If not, I'd replace it fast. Also, I wouldn't run it anymore until you are in the process of copying it to the new drive.
