My Dell D820 Is In Testing!

I have been reading lots of informative posts on this site for a while as I been planning a laptop purchase for my wife's business. The $400 off coupon finally convinced me to pull the trigger on a D820 yesterday (about $1500 before tax, configured perfectly for our needs, shipped free). I actually called Dell and spoke to a small business sales rep to make the order (and to see if they would sweeten the deal a little over the Web price). The rep could not give me a better deal, so I asked if he could give me a complimentary shipping upgrade to 2-day or next day as we need the machine ASAP. He said no, but promised to ask his supervisor to expedite my order and "put it in the front of the line". It sounded like a typical line of sales-BS to me, but I had decided to order the machine and my wife had given me the green light. I figured I may as well order it before she changes her mind and tries to save a few bucks by going with an Inspiron. Well, I just checked the status of the order online and the estimated ship date is April 28th, but the site indicates that the "Kitting" and "Build" phases are complete and the machine is now in "Testing"! Awesome! Apparently Dell is finally cranking out these machines. If anyone is interested in my configuration (I mean my wife's configuration) I would be happy to post it.

Maybe the higher-end Nvidia video adapter is OOS? At least it looks like they are starting to get these things out the door. Of course, my wife could care less about the machine. She just wants a reliable business laptop. I am the one that is psyched to check out the new family toy!

You can definitely get more computer for the $ if you go Inspiron. I chose the Latitude because of the build quality primarily. My wife does not baby her laptop (as I would) and she is used to a pretty high-end Thinkpad from her previous job. This is to be solely a business machine so a video solution for gaming was not an issue. If you are thinking about a D620/820 you might consider pulling the trigger today as it looks like the $400 deal is expires tonight (unless they extend it).

Under your specs, it says:

1 1 465-2039 Windows XP Professional, SP2 with media, for Latitude English, Factory Installed

I noticed on the Dell site you can get XP with "no media"

Does anyone know what this is?

And EZ_B, when you get it, can you let us know how it is? Specifically, I wonder if the 9-cell battery protruding a bit is an issue at all.

"no media" means they don't send you the disk for an OS reinstall.

DarthPierce is correct. For some reason, Dell gives you the option of ordering the machine without an OS reinstall disk. Not sure why anyone would select that option... As far as the 9 cell battery goes, the rep that sold me the computer stated that it is the same size as the 6 cell. The 9 cell protrudes on the D620 but not on the D820. I should be able to confirm this soon as the machine is now in the "Boxing" stage of production. I'll post some pictures when I get the new toy.

I can (almost) verify that by saying that the D810, D800, I8500, and I8600 all have very similar chassis to the D820, and in the 810,800,8600, and 8500 the 9 cell battery does not in any way extend outside the body of the laptop.

I would think it EXTREMELY weird if dell decided to go with a protruding battery after not having it for years on the same model line with no increase in capacity..... as a customer, I wouldn't stand for it!

Thanks to both of you for the info on the 9-cell battery.

I saw that thread with pics of the D620 with the 9-cell protruding, so I assumed the D820 was the same, but I forgot about the larger size case because of the 15.4" screen, and I'm also looking at the Thinkpad T60, which has the 9-cell protruding from the back, even in the 15" models

Anyway, I look forward to your impressions and your confirmation on the 9-cell.

I have eval units on order for the 620 and 820. They have both shipped. I know that there is 1 package showing up tomorrow but I'm not sure if it's the 620 or 820. I won't be back in the office until Monday so I won't know which one it is until then. Almost makes me want to go into the office tomorrow to find out...but not quite.

Well, I checked the Dell site this morning and my D820 was still in "Boxing". Waited for an hour and checked it again and it has shipped! Those Dell folks are even working on Easter! Just a couple more days and it will be mine!
