The Headphones Thread - Page 10

Just shot an email to Jamey Warren at headphone.com to see if they will ship HD212Pro and Bithead to my APO box. If so then I'll place the order. Finally a decision is made! Thanks for all your help Gsminardi!

Yep...my pair have the crack too...must be two pieces of plastic.

And sorry gs I wasn't clear earlier. The only vinyl machine I have is part of an old Fisher quad cassette deck+radio+vinyl thingy. So I guess you could say I don't have any vinyl gear. I meant that when the album was first released, since it was the 60's, it must've been on vinyl. So now that I have the CD, it must've been digitally remastered by some studio.

Jamey is very cool...I've spoken to him a couple of times and once in person at a headroom tour.

Headroom tech support and customer support is excellent. They will take care of your problems no matter what.

Same for Todd - www.ttvj.com

The Bithead is ideal - DAC+AMP in one box and a high quality amp and DAC to boot!

But you can go a lot cheaper for a XITEL PRO USB DAC and a CMOY/PIMETA amplifier for a little less than the price of the Bithead.

If you want any clarification and advice lemme know - plenty of PIMETA amps on sale on www.headfi.com and they sound better than the total airhead (which sounds better than the bithead) LOL

Lemme know if I can help...

Several pads that will make the RS-1 sound better :-

1] Grado Flat Pads : contact Todd at www.ttvj.com ($25??)
2] VWAP Flat Pads : less bassy but more detailed than the Grado Flat pads ($15)

The RS-1 sounds good - no doubt. But it is no rolls royce lets leave that out of here...the RS-1 leaves a lot to be desired. The RA-1 is a nice amp for a Grado but it is a real joke as far as the price is concerned. The PPA blows the RA-1 sky high and it is honestly beaten by several cheaper amps for sound quality. Nice looks though...they should lose that cheap looking aluminum know on it

Looks like the BitHead won't be available until June. Where can I find the XITEL PRO USB DAC and does it need an amplifier still? I really do like the idea of an all in one unit like the BitHead. Also, how about the Total BitHead? Would that be better? Even if I do have to wait?
I think the Bithead is a nice piece of gear but it is too pricey for what it is...a DAC + AMP.

The xitel Pro USB (www.xitel.com) does the job of the DAC for $99.00 and you can get an awesome amplifier (PIMETA) for $50 - 100

A total of $150 - 200 which is less than the price of the bithead.

Besides - you can use this PIMETA amplifier to connect to your nice high end CD Player and use your high end headphones with it...sonic bliss!!

check out www.jmtaudio.com for various amplifier options...
used ones pop up for less on www.headfi.com - there are a bunch of amps on sale as we speak...

Cheers!!

I dont recommend noise cancelling because you pay a lot for something that doesnt work very well. Better to spend on the etymotics or shure.

You're mistaken. The noise cancelling in the PXC-250 works very well, and unlike the earbuds I believe you were refering to, the Sennheisers are very comfortable. I've used the noise cancellation in jets, coffee shops and several other noisey and distracting environments, and they amount of noise damping is not trvial. I have tried quite a few other headphones, including earbuds. I found the earbuds very uncomfortable and no better at noise cancellation.
The Sennheiser PXC-250s are expensive, but they are worth it if you want working noise cancellation without having to go to some uncomfy earbuds. They fold up very small for travel. Additionally they have a very pleasant, rich sound.

I had those headphones for 2 days before returning them. I respectfully disagree - the sound quality and the noise cancelling are worthless.

The ordinary PX-200 has better sound.

Which earbuds have you used? Nobody will prefer a noise cancelling headphone over a ear-canal headphone when it comes to cancelling - it is a no contest in favor of the ear-canal headphones.

Comfort is another issue though. I did not like the Etymotics headphones. The Shure headphones worked better for me with the foam tips. Absolute isolation and I could wear them for several hours before I felt the need to take them off.

I just read all the replys on this tread, as it seems to be one of the best ones to search for opinnions about headfones... I see that the Senheiser HD-497 and the Grado SR-60 are good options, and they are in my budget range! What I´m looking for is a pair of headfones for my laptop Asus M6N... I don´t want an crapp couse I´m used to a pair of Sonus Faber grand piano set... I need some advice from you guys:

1 - The two referred headfones are open, will that be a problem when in a library?
2 - Is my notebook, or any notebook, powerfull enough for theese headfones?
3 - Does the quality sound of the notebook requires for a good headfones set?

Thanks alot, I really can´t figure this out...
It could be a problem in the library. In this case I would recommend the following headphones :-

* Sennheiser HD-280 Pro
* Sennheiser HD-212 Pro
* Audio Technica ATH A-500 / 700 / 900

Yes the notebook is powerful enough. I used the HD-580 with my Sager 5660 without an amp and it was plenty loud.

The 3rd question is a bit vague. I think the Grado SR-60/Senn HD-497 offer a lot of improvement over the speakers in the notebook. However the sound output from the notebook is not the highest quality...noise, hiss etc. (not bad but it could have been better).

Hey, thanks for the fast reply! I will check those ones... You are saying that their quality is ok, but lower than the Grado SR-60 right...?
no - not necessarily.

I would rate them as follows :-

1] Grado SR-60, Senn HD-280, ATH A-500/700/900

2] Senn HD-212 pro, Senn HD-497

Ok then! Thanks again! Now the next problem is finding those here in Portugal...

Do you know where I can find pictures of the Audio Technica ATH A-500 / 700 / 900? Do like the looks of the Sennheiser HD-212 Pro, the 280 are a bit expensive right now...

The Shure Ec2 seems a good option too... But unconfortable right...?

Should I run from the px 200 or something like that? I saw somewhere that the HD-212 Pro has too bass...

still never got a reply from tom about those grado flatpads
post #197 of 674
i'm heading off to college very soon here and everyone i've spoken too says that a nice pair of headphones (full ear coverage, not like street style or ear buds) are a must have.

i'd been looking at getting Bose tri-ports, but for the money i'm sure there's something better out there. if people could please throw out some reccomendations of good headphones for $150 or less, it would be much appreciated.
i would check out the sennheiser 515s and 555s.

good reviews for both sets of full size cans in your price range.
Grado SR-80's for $70.00-85.00. Anywhere in that price range is a great deal for a pair of headphones that compete with $250.00+ headphones.

How to decide?

I've read this thread as well as others at head-fi and I'm looking in the <$200 range. They will be used mostly on my computer playing games, listening to rock music, and watching dvd's. They will not be amp powered for now.

I'm looking at:
Sennheiser HD-590 - someone at head-fi said not to consider these becasuse they are too bright for their own good.
Grado 125
AKG K271 Studio recommended by toddthevinyljunkie.com
Beyerdynamic DT250-80 - This on as well as the AKG and Ultrasone were recommended for gaming.
Ultrasone HIFI-650
Audio-Technica ATH-A900 - recommend by head-fi

Now is it worth to get these 150-200 headphones over the grado 60's or sennheiser 497's?

I'm also leaning toward the closed headphone type. But how to decide which one to get?
