The Headphones Thread - Page 11

I would say that for the price, the SR60s are your best bet. Now if you were planning on purchasing an amp, then I'd be able to justify spending more money on those others. As it is, the SR60 can't be beat in their price range. Even amped, you'd find more than a few people who stick with them for their sound alone. The only thing I'd have reservations about would be comfort. If you're planning on leaving these things on your head for more than 4 or 5 hours, take a few 10 minute breaks every once in awhile. You're gonna love having the SR60s, (or any Grados for that matter) when it comes to portability. The ear pieces lay flat. As far as the open vs. closed, it's up to you. Closed do not let any of the music bleed out to bother other folks, but some people say that the cheapies resonate and color the music. I'd probably regulate the open/closed choice to a matter of taste. In fairness to all the other cans you mentioned, they're great with the right amp.

GS, I was wondering if you could answer a few questions? I am looking to get a good set of headphones and don't know which ones to go with. I bet you wish you had a dollar for everytime you've heard that. I am trying to decide between the HD 212 Pro & HD 497. However, my impression of the HD 212's after reading this thread is that they are not serious headphones. Is that wrong? Are the 497's A LOT better than the HD 212's? I like bass, but yet it sounds like the 212's might be too much? Do the 497's have good bass? All this talk of bass on headphones is making me curious, because I can't remember EVER hearing good bass thru headphones, or even ANY bass at all. Of course I've never owned anything like these. I am mainly going to be listening to MP3s and Gaming. What do you recommend? Could you let me know what you think of the 212's and 497s if there were a head to head contest between the two. Should I consider going over the $100.00 mark? Could you explain the difference in $150.00-$200.00 headphones and SUB $100.00 headphones? Anotherwords what am I going to hear in a set of $150.00 "cans" that I won't with a set of $70.00 ones. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Does anyone have these headphones?

Headphones

These headphones look really sweet and i heard mixed reviews, but not enough to make a solid opinion on...basically some people think they're super duper good and others super duper ****ty.

Anyways, since u guys here at the forums are pretty intelligent. I wanted to know what u guys think. Anyone have them or know anything about them?

Also if these suck, can someone recommend something still stylish(these look awesome!) and wireless, that sounds great.

Thanks guys

Help!

I am trying to decide on a pair of headphones for use with my new notebook. I am going to be listining to music (mostly CDs, not MP3s) and gaming, but I am much more concerned with sound quality for the music. My computer has just an integrated sound card, and, sadly, no line-out. I am now concentrating (mostly) on two options:

1) Grado SR60 ~ $60

2) Sennheiser HD 555 & BitHead package at HeadRoom ~ $260

A bit of a price difference there .

How great would the sound difference be between these two options?

I have read that USB amps (like BitHead) are bad for gaming. Is this just a slowdown, or do they not work right? If I pluged the HD 555 into the headphone jack for playing games would I still get decent sound?

Do FireWire amps/DACs run into the same problems with games? If not, are there any good FireWire options?

I am sorry for dumping all of these questions on you. [ShamlessButteringUp]I hope that all of you great posters can help me with your superior intelligence and endless patience [/ShamlessButteringUp].

Maskull: I bought the HD555+BitHead package and it should be arriving today (8-13). I'll let you know if I notice any performance derogation. Of course, my method of testign is to see if I notice anything without actively looking. Just drop me a PM in a day or two if you don't see anything from me about this

I can offer some assistance here. Any questions in particular?

Depends on how good your ears are

The SR-60 straight out of the laptop will sound awesome. You may have problems with the buzzing, clicking etc. because of shielding problems but mute the unnecessary stuff in the audio control panel and you shouldnt have a major problem.

The Bithead will definitely add to your audio experience. it is essentially an external soundcard (Dac + Amp) without any EAX processing and all. Gamers might want a creative external soundcard solutions (Audigy NX-2??) but the Bithead has a better DAC for music.

The HD-555 is awesome for gaming but teh SR-60 with the Todd (www.ttvj.com) flat pads is the best bet for your money. HD-555 also improved my gaming because of its soundstage which is very realistic...

Basically it boils down to these :-

Grado SR-60 = $60
Grado SR-225 = $180
Senn HD-555 = $150
Senn HD-580 = $130 (great headphone but needs an amp)

If you can afford it - get the SR-225 (> $150)
If you cannot - get the SR-60 (<$100)

The ones in the middle are the ones you will have to think about. I personally wouldnt get any of them except the HD-580 which is just as good as a $400 HD-650 (with mild differences cosmetically and sonically).

Lemme know what you decide to do. I will keep checking back with this thread.

cheers!

I just got my BitHead & HD 555s and all I can say is wow. I've been playing Morrowwind for the 2nd time this weekend and I just couldn't tear myself away from it. It was amazing because I was picking up sounds I never heard before. Also, I haven't seen any slowdown in gameplay while using the BitHead.
Excellent. The Bithead will not cause any major slowdown. I play FarCry and Doom3 with the Bithead and HD-650 and **** my pants everytime :0

Great combo for gaming and music...

try the 555 with a EAX capable card and prepare to be blown away. (Either straight out of the EAX card or the line out of the EAX card to the Bithead to the 555).

Cheers!

I'll have remember to try that, but certainly not soon. I think I've spent enough money on the compy this summer. Of course, that's what I thought before I bought the headphones & amp, whoo boy...

I know this is like a half year late, but I just ordered the Grado SR-60. I love low bass and I hope they will impress me, these are my first serious headphones.
Thanks everyone,

I decided to go with the Grado SR-60s. Given my current finances, they were the saner choice. I may still upgrade sometime in the future, though.

Ok, I ordered my SR-60 from headphone.com and I just got an email saying the SR-60 is backordered. Their customer service blows completely and they apparently don't want to mention when they will be stocked again. Is there a site I can search for Grado resellers? Wondering if I can pick one up from a store here in DC

Edit- Good grief, how come no one has mentioned how much headphone.com's customer service SUCKS? I keep calling their 800 number with no response. They supposedly close in 2 hours.
actually www.headphone.com has one of the best cs out there. They will replace, accept returns, make refunds in case you are not happy etc. They go out of the way to help the customer.

Why dont you use email instead of calling in?

Other good resellers :-

www.ttvj.com

www.audioadvisor.com

cheers!

This may or may not be necessary. I have a portable setup (Rio Karma/Apple iPod + CMOY + Grado SR-60/Shure E2c/Shure E3) which gives me more enjoyment than my VERY expensive (think $4000.00) home setup (Sennheiser HD-650/Grado SR-225 + Rudistor RP5cav/Woo Audio 1 + Sony D555ES/Ack Dac/Bel Canto Dac2)

You will be VERy pleased with the SR-60. Do yourself a favour and buy those grado flat pads from www.ttvj.com and see the improvements in Bass.

You can make them yourself if you want.

vwap flat pads for the grados also provides a good sound.

I already did email them 3 times to cancel, no reply. Finally 2 days later I called again and was able to cancel it. The guy was pretty nice, but it makes me wonder why it took 2 days, 10 calls and 3 emails to cancel a simple order.

Then I ordered fro audioadviser, they immediately shipped it out and were cool, so I recommend them

Amir - I'm sorry to hear about the customer support stuff you went through over at Headphone.com. I sent their cs rep an email this morning and recieved a prompt reply. My guess is that she was overwhelmed at the time you were trying to contact them. If you look around the website you can see that the company is pretty darn small, with only 1 customer service rep for the whole of it. Be sure to let us know what you think of the headphones though.
