That was fun. Know of a place to find more recordings like that?

That is pretty cool, I've heard similarly 3d sound with a Dolby Headphone track I found on one of my DVD's (Terminator 2 I think)

I'll just add that from comments on Headfi and reviews that the MDR-F1 isn't really anywhere close to the SA1000 in quality, correct?

Correct. The F1 is a nicely executed design with mediocre sound. The midrange is ghastly Otherwise it isnt too bad.

SA1000 is significantly heavier on the bass and balanced through the midrange. The midrange is relatively sucked out when compared with the HD-650 and SA-5000 but for the price it is more than what I expected.

Search the web for Binaural Recordings and you should find a fair few...I dont know why they arent more popular. Probably a good design project for you to understand how binaural mics work, how to make your own, make it and document the steps - enjoy the results

If you take a binaural mic with you to a concert and share the recordings...everyone who listens to it with headphones will feel like they are IN the concert...

Amazing innit?

I listened to that recording through the CD2000's and while it was very good, at no time did the sound move forward for me. It all seemed to sound from the sides, and moving around behind me. Tiny bit sad, because I could begin to sense what it "could" be like. And of course, this tells me that soundstage is going to be very, very important in my next selection.

Think I'll have to grab the SA1000 and hope this improves.

Thank you!

You will always have imaging issues with headphones. If you really want an "out of the head" experience you have to get the Omega-II or the HE90 headphones...

Good choice. Let me know how they work out. I love my pair! It spends more time on my head than any other headphone. I calculate this as "Head Time". The ratio of Head-Time to Price should be as high as possible to justify a headphone (in my opinion). This is the "Lambda" factor for a headphone

So far, out of all the headphones in my possession, only the SR-60 and the SA1000 have an acceptable Lambda. Which is why I am re-evaluating my priorities and, with it, my equipment.

Fun eh?

Just read all of this thread *phew* It's cool that GS has been posting recomendations for over two years.

Please Recomend me some Headphones based on these needs.
(scale 1-5 with 5 being optimal)
Comfort - 5 (going to be wearing these many hours)
Bass - 2 (don't really care, just enough to provide good quality)
Price - 50-100 USD can go higher if the value is there.
Physical Dimensions - 3 (not to concerned with this as long as I don't look like an idiot)
Sensitivity - ? I don't know what this means...

I have been using the earbuds that came with my ipod and they have been okay, I was originally looking for a wireless headphones, but from what I read the quality is not all that great.

Anyways I look forward to your recomendations.

I own MDR-V600, my first "studio quality" headphones. I like the sound and circumaural construction comfort but despise coiled cord - it pulls on the left ear cup and tends to clamp to anything uneven

Do the SA1000 have coiled wire too? Any good headphones in $100-$150 price range that don't have coiled wire?

Also, is there a really big difference in sound between V600 and SA1000?

Thanks

GSferrari, I went with your suggestion about 4 months ago and got the grado sr-60s and I absolutely love them. However, my roommate often complains about my noise level coming from the headphones. Are there any comporable headphones for a similar price tag that won't be as noisy to people are me or is this just a charecteristic of nice headphones? I'd like to be able to enjoy my sound without pissing him off. Having to switch to my ipod earbuds and having my $70 grados sit next to me is no fun!

You could get some IEM's. The sony EX-71's aren't bad (not that good either), and the Shure E2's are supposed to be pretty good.

Just finished my MINT amp with the buffers that came this morning and plugged into it with a cheapy pair of earphones (just in case). My first impression is "Whoa!" Even better with my HD580s. I am very impressed with this little 9V amp and it was well worth the effort.

Now I just need to put it in a case (a little gangly right now with wires inevery direction) and find out why the power LED doesn't turn on. Probably put to big a resistor in front of it. Hmmm. Now where is my multimeter?

Any pics? I really don't want to get rid of the grados but I like my noise privacy (other people can't hear what im doing, lol)

Here are some pics of the fully assembled amp with a new diode and one after installation in the case.
