The Headphones Thread - Page 4

I checked out that recording. Quite impressive, although I wished to hear whatever comes after the cut-off. It is also quite...suggestive...I wonder if the kiss and the murder case is somehow connected...

No this is not the company that bought Sensaura. I think some soundcard company (Creative ) bought Sensaura...

Hitman 3 : Contracts is coming out for PC in Summer and will support Headphones with its "Binaural Surround Sound" feature...

How you guys doing. Been watching this thread for a week now, and due to your suggestions and many hours of thinking i decided to get the grado sr-85. I know it has to be amped, but i am gunna ask my roommate a computer engineer to build me a cmoy one. Wanted to thank you for your input, we'll see how the combo turns out once we get started and finished with building the amp. Headphones should arrive sometime this week.
SR-80 you mean And they dont HAVE to be amped. I often use my SR-325's straight out of the headphone port on my Rio Karma and laptop - no problems. With a portable player that has a line out - the amp will make a huge difference to the sound quality - thats all.

The CMOY is more than enough. I use it at times to drive my HD580, SR-60 and SR-325 - does it beautifully with enough power to spare on the volume control. Pick up a 9V adapter (with the 9V battery type clip) from RadioShack to save on battery costs

Yea 9v was what i was planning on, i don't think a lithium battery would be worth it. Yea sorry it was SR-80, tedious jobs at work fry the brain. I just decided to amp it cuz i was looking for a bit deeper base, and it seems alot of people are using the small cmoy amp with it. Figured it would go well with it, and what the hell be nice to have headphone amps anyway since most of my listening time now is with headphones. Thanx again for the correction and all the info you've given in this forum

One way to mod your CMOY will be to cut an opening on the top of the mint tin and use aplexiglass window instead. Add a few low power LED's in a color of your choice on the inside (separate power supply for these please - perhaps a AA battery) and show off your soldering skills.

Another suggestion - tape the insides of the tin with an insulation tape before you mount your PCB and the rest of the equipment. Also - when making holes for the headphone out/ line in/ toggle switch / volume control and power LED - try to insulate the metal around the hole so that the sockets/etc. dont come in contact with the case. You will encounter RF/RMF noise (not bothersome but not required either).

Dont thank me for the input - head to www.headfi.com and you'll learn in NO TIME

I will get the HD-497 once I save enough money. (Seriously, I am saving for headphones.) As you said, the SR-60 probably sound better than the HD-497. But the SR-60 is after all supra-aural, while the HD-497 seem to surround the ear instead. I guess the added comfort of the HD-497 will be worth the decreased sound quality. Plus it is $10 less.

gs, do you have a promotion code for headphone.com that I could use? Just a thought...
No - not one I can pass around at least considering I just placed an order for a Headroom Bithead for my future laptop :P sorry...

Just decided to add this in this thread :- http://notebookforums.com/archive/index.php/t-10755

pretty comprehensive but maybe a little outdated

gs-
Not to change the subject, but what's your take on a nice set of small external speakers for a laptop? Would it be possible to drive them with a something like a transportable headphone amp?
Small external speakers are usually powered. If they are not powered then you can drive them from the headphone port on the laptop.

What speakers are you talking about. Most "multimedia" speakers dont deserve an amp Most high end ( more than $50.00) speakers are usually self powered.

Cheap speakers dont benefit from amps - headphones are "expensive" once they step into the $50.00 plus bracket - and these benefit from an amp - you can hear more detail with headphones...

Carry a stereo amp and a electric generator, along with some oil with you. That way you get big sound anywhere you go.

But seriously, I have never heard of portable amps for small speakers. They are either active or only requires the power that a headphone port provides. I have used portable guitar amps though. I guess they work on the same principal.

What do y'all think of Audio Technica ATH-M40fs? I just got those, and I love em.
heard of em but never heard em
gs, how much worse is the HD212 than the HD497? Does sealed phones suffer from a lot of drawbacks? I am afraid that the HD497 is going to disturb people...
The HD212 is NOT a musical phone. Its nice for MP3's but dont expect to WOW yourself with its "reference" quality...it has AWESOME JAW RATTLING BASS!! which makes it great fun for first person shooters and music is not too bad - just not top of the class.

The Grado SR-60 is only a few $$$ more and far more worthy of "audiophile" quality!!

Why dont you just give it a shot!!
