The Headphones Thread - Page 31

post #601 of 674
No problem galahad05. A few people dislike the Grado look, and they can be a little bit uncomfy. I've owned a pair of Sennheiser 5xx series and nothing great on sound quality (or build) very flimsy, and badly designed headphone cord/connectors.Since the RS-1's (and all of the other Grados) are open they leak ALOT of noise, and provide zero isolation. With them on my head with no music playing I can hear the laptop HD clicking away. Personally I dislike totally closed around the ear type (big Sennheisers) just too sweaty and ears get too hot, and I find closed phones have a one noted boomy sound to them.

macpk01 is this for portable use or with the laptop? Are there any models that appear to be what you like? ie PX200 (small closed on ear) Sennheiser 201 (large closed back) or Grado SR-60 (open superaural) Browse here ...

Oh if anyone is having problems with headphones cracking/distorting it's probably the headphone amp in the laptop being insufficient. You can improve sound quality and stop distortion with a portable headphone amplifier, a Cmoy or Aphead 47 will do, about £30-£60. Ideally you'll want to use line out (if your computer has it) Or you can go crazy by feeding signal digitally to a DAC then to a headphone amp, but that's costly/not portable - either full size components, or multiple battery powered boxes (there is a portable DAC & headphone amp but it's pretty costly)

Well, received my SA1000 and tried it out

Nice, comfy, cable weighs almost nothing, just what I wanted.

Now, this is open cans (my previous MDR-V600 is closed and I even considered AKG K271 for a while before deciding on SA1K) and it takes getting used to. Excellent "ambience" Next to no bass at low volume That's compared to my V600 and expected: they definitely need quite a bit of burn in before sounding proper. Interesting effect is when I cover SA1K cans with my palms they sound better. Maybe they meant to be made closed

Anyway, I am very happy with the purchase

Thanks for excellent advice on this thread

Price - 4
Physical Dimensions - 2

Hmmm...You want it to be portable?

Lets see...

* Portable/ semi-portable
* Decent Bass
* $100.00
* no amp - sensitive enough for iPod/PSP

I am thinking of IEMs like the Shure E2 but you want these to be "circumaural" as well.

SA1000s are sensitive and circumaural but I cant imagine how you would carry them to school.

Suggestions:

- Sennheiser HD-25 (NOT the HD-25SP)
- Grado SR-225 (this one is not circumaural and you should be able to find them used for around $120.00 - if that is muchos dineros...get the SR-60 + Todd Flat Pads)

Cant think of anything else right now...first option is pricey but see if you can find used for less. KICKASS headphone.

Let me browse through the other options and recommend a few more...

Yeah, I had the Shure e2c. They were just a little too hard to take( meanig slow process). So, I returned them.

Hey anybody ever used these?

Thanks

Guy´s this isn´t much related to headphones, though I ordered the shure e2c. Just wanted your opinion about sound quality: Wich one is better, cd walkman player or mp3 player?
post #606 of 674
Batas, you can't really generalize, however low bitrate MP3's will sound alot worse than the original CD, so the CD player will sound better. But with high bitrate MP3/OGG or lossless FLAC it'll depend on the sound quality from the device.

Yes, I understand... But my question is, in the 100-150€ range, what offers better quality, mp3 or cd walkman device? Hmm.... Shure that I would encode mp3 at 320Kbps... So many doubts...
post #609 of 674
Can't really answer the question. They're both portable audio players, each different pros/cons but if you have alot of music and want to carry your collection with you I would go for a MP3/OGG player. Their are several types, flash or hard drive based, different capacities and HD type (1.8" and I think even micro drives, one uses 2.5") HD mp3 players are more prone to damage but can store lots of music - I have a 40GB iriver so imagine 50-100MB per album, that's around 500 albums! I also have a portable CD player but I don't use that anymore.

So right now its the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro vs. AKG K 26 P . Any opinions? OR the turtle beach 5.1s. These will be for music, gaming and movies.

Both nice...HD-280 obviously feels more "substantial" and comfortable. The AKG is a supra-aural (sits on the ear) while the Senn is circumaural "around the ear".

I would get the AKG for shits and giggles...sounds good, cheap, portable and if it breaks - you wont cry over buying another one. Thats why I bought the Koss Porta-Pro 2 (which is another headphone you should consider).

I just sold my grado sr-60s and got in my akg k 26 p headphones. So far I really like them, but each pair of headphones have their tradeoffs.

Grado SR-60:
+the deep, clear, organic sound of the open canned grados can't be replicated by closed cans
+cool retro styling
+listening to these headphones just makes you pleased because they sound so nice
+comfortable
-open can characteristic did not allow me to listen to them in the library or in the room while the roommate is studying
-kind of big for casual listening, received some funny looks

AKG K 26P
+/- they sound good, but still can't really replicate the grados
+portable, they fold up nice and compact
+closed can allows me to listen to them whenever I want and no one else can hear me
+BASS! these things have thunderous bass, they go too loud for me to handle without distorting. So if you are into bass, these things are great.
-The way that they collapse kind of makes the two peices on top a tad uncomfortable. But its still not a huge drawback, you get used to it.
-Closed can sound, grados had nicer highs

All in all both are great headphones. I miss the sound of my grados but I can listen to these akgs anywhere. Oh well, I guess I will take good sound, portability, privacy and a couple of dollars in my pocket over great sound, medium portability and a slight lack of audio privacy for now.

I am going to retire from this thread for a couple of months. I've made a few recommendations over time that still hold good. Take your pick from the abundant choices that are presented in this thread and make an informed decision.

Good Luck!

I'll be back sometime

Just know that your help is always appreciated. I have really enjoyed my MINT amp when listening to music on my laptop. The clipping that I was experiencing before is totally absent and the sound is full and more enjoyable. I was listening to a Vivaldi piece and could actually hear members of the orchestra moving around, coughing and flipping pages. I had never heard this much detail in the piece before. Thanks again for your help and I hope to see you around the forums.

I don't like any behind the neck headsets. I just bought a new Coby set of headphones for 15 bucks at Freddies. Came with Studio style headphones (for recording and gaming) earbuds (for school) and an adaptor so I can jam out on my guitar without waking the dead!

I also don't like behind neck style but I bought some anyways. It is the only kind I found that is bluetooth 2.0 xterasys bpmh model. it includes: bt2.0 headphone headset (can function as both wireless stereo headphones and headset for phones)+ bluetooth 2.0 audio dongle (to pair the headphone with not bluetooth device to stream audio). All in all it is a fair value for $110 (it does do multiple things).
