The Headphones Thread - Page 5

Grado makes some good stuff. Speaking as somthing of an audiophile, you may also want to check out Sennheiser. My HD570's are pretty nice and comfortable on the head. I find the Grado's can get a bit uncomfortable after extended listening sessions.

Speaking of which, regarding sealed phones, they are typically a bit less comfortable for longer wear, as they apply more pressure on sides of head in order to make the "seal". Sealed phones can also become warmer about the ears, as they preclude air circulation.

The HD570's refrenced above are not sealed. Hence you can hear people approaching, etc., unless you've got them cranked). In an office environment, folks sitting close by may hear low level noise if you have them cranked

I have the Sennheiser HD580 and HD-650 and the HD-212 Pro. I have the Grado SR-60/80 and the SR-325. The odd one in my collection is an electrostatic Stax SRM3+404 series combo.

I love them all

The only reason I am leaning towards the HD497 and HD212 is because of their comfort over the SR60. I believe you in that the SR60 is probably the best sounding for the price.... Oh, this is so hard. How does the HD497 compare to the SR60 really? I probably will not be able to purchase both of them and then return one. I can only rely on your comparison of the two. Does the HD497 fare far worse than the SR60? Is it a lot better than the HD212?

The inverted pear shape of the HD570's make for comfortable wear during extended listening sessions.

A friend picked up a used set of Grado SR-60's off ebay for $20 (including shipping, I think), so maybe an option worth looking into if you're on a budget.

I can't find any SR60s on eBay at this time, so probably no one is selling those right now...

CircuitCity has HD212's, and I happen to have a 15% off coupon. But since gs do not think they are that great, I probably wouldn't go with them.

But is the HD497 a lot better than the HD212, and therefore a worthy competitor for the SR60? Or are they a long way off from the quality of the SR60's?

The Grado SR-60 is VERY comfortable straight out of the box - the soft pads are very nice - trust me about this and do yourself a favor.

the HD-212 and HD-497 ARE NOT CIRCUMAURAL!! They also sit on the ear just like the Grados...

You cannot do better than the SR-60 for sound quality. The next best headphone is the Grado SR-225 which costs $200.00 something...

The next best Sennheiser is the HD-580 which needs an amp and is just not feasible on the move (IT IS HUGE)

Go to www.ttvj.com and order the Grado SR-60. Todd (I know him personally - mention gsferrari in your order for faster shipping - he wont tell you ) Todd is awesome with his return policy and he will help you find what you need if you find the SR-60 is not the one for you.

Deltawalker - go order the SR-60 - you will not be able to meet me in person to give me $2400 for my new 8790 in person - as a token of thanks - But I accept checks, Money orders and cash

Dude, I am still saving to buy these headphones! I have to make sure I leave aside enough cash for my future notebook...

If I call ttvj will I be able to speak with Todd or will it just be a company rep?

gs, do you have any high res pics of the SR60's from various angles? I'd like to see them.

Also, B&H has the HD497s for 49.99. So forgive me if I choose to go with them in the end, but I am really cheap and may not be able miss a chance to save myself $20.

thanx for the pics.

the first 3 pics on the first 2 emails are great.
But the last 3 emails did not work? I can see the name of the files but they are 0bytes?
YEH!?!!?!?

Ok i'll send you links ASAP!!
Wow...the SR60 is even more retro than I thought.

BTW, the mails from the .com address worked fine, but the ones from the .edu address did not contain the pictures. The files became dummy files of about 120 bytes.

removed bw kills!!!
The first two pics dont have the foams on.

The foams are aftermarket grado flat pads ($30.00 a pair) - the original foams are comfortable soft foamies - these ones make the sound MUCH better!!!

These look ****ing awesome, retro but they sound freakin awesome!!! Dont go by looks - people love this look - looks better than the gay looking Senn HD-497

Trust me - treat yourself to good sound and awesome "I am classier than you" look
post #95 of 674
Download the pics ASAP - I will take them off tonight...too much space taken up too much bandwidth and my university will kill me
post #96 of 674
Deltawalkerl- I used to routinley wear my HD 570's 8-10 hrs/day. They're comfortable and sound good. My buddies SR60's sounded good as well, but not as comfortable, and we both thought my Senn's sounded a little better.

gsferrari-- I note you left the HD570's off your list. Any particular reason why? Yeah, you can do better, but in the mid price range, I think they're pretty good.

Ciro informed me of this thread so I thought I would post up some pictures of my Beyerdynamics DT 770 Pros and my Marantz 2230B receiver.

Here you are!

Behold, the 2230B! I just love the contrast of the blue on the black...these pictures are very washed out, and blurry..crappy camera... Whatever

Here they are, in all their glory!

Yes, they are so soft... gotta love the velvet pads!

And of course, what good is a subwoofer if it isn't ported!? Yes, the 770 heavily relies on the internal resonance chamber behind each driver to produce more clean bass than most people have ever witnessed from a headphone...
Wow...that was a lot of very very large pics.

gs, I don't know how to say this...I missed the pics you posted. Could you try sending the last 5 through your .com email address again? If it's too much trouble or you don't have enough bandwidth, it's ok. I have a good enough idea what they look like from the first 3 pics.

You are right, the HD497's have a generic, mainstream look designed to blend in, while the SR60s obviously have the professional, specialized equipment look...what to do, what to do.

Those Beyers are freakin subwoofers!!! I have one on order because I heard so much about them !! I think they will be awesome for gaming...how amp dependant are they JeffL ??

delta - you cant go wrong with the SR-60/SR-225/HD-497 (570 is too bright and shrill afaik)/and the DT-770's are also highly recommended...there's a cheaper version called DT-250-80 I think which are also absolutely BASSACIOUS!!!
JeffL - if you ever consider selling your gear (Marantz or whatever else you have and are considering selling) - hook me up and we'll do a deal...I have some stuff I wanna sell too - lemme know if you are in the buying scene...

Here is a list anyway :-

1] 2X10" Subwoofers - Infinity Reference and MTX (something) 4 months old - $100.00 (High quality cables included)
2] Sennheiser HD-580 Precision - $130.00
3] Grado SR-325 - $200.00 (includes bowl pads/flat pads and 1/4 - 1/8 adapter)
4] Sony DVP-N685V SACD/DVD/CD 5 Disk Changer (highly recommended source level upgrade for the serious audiophile - you will notice the difference in a SNAP! when you use this in place of your crappy source ) - $200.00 plus shipping (This is brand new - out of the box - I got a new Shanling T-20 which smokes this source but the Shanling is $2500.00 )

Thats all im letting go of for now I guess...if you guys wanna sell me stuff - PM me...
