Inspiron 8600 died?

Hi, guys... been a long time reader here but now am joining the club. OK, I had my 8600 since December of 1994 when it first came out (roughly 1year-4months), keyboard keys were loose after about 3 months and now 2 are out, and that's with minimum use. For a $2200 laptop, it is pretty dissappointing!!!! Of course, I heard the 8600 line were badddly made, a myth or a fact? My girlfriend makes fun of me with her 5-year old mac with perfect functionning keyboard, yeah... I am still trying to convince her to switch from the Dark Side.
Now, the laptop won't boot up. It goes up to "dell" screen, "XP" screen and then ..... unmountable boot volume... blue screen. It won't open in safe mode, nothing. Is my hard drive dead?

You had your 8600 since Dec 1994? Must be a typo. Dells, you get what you pay for. My 8600a is acting strange, ie mouse driver not loading. I'm looking to buy a new nb as soon as blu-ray/hd drives are released.

Take out hd and put it in an external box to see if it is dead or not.

I hope it is not my hard drive, I have so many pictures in there. How can a hard drive die only after a year or so???!!! what the heck? Yeah, I meant 2004. I can still run diagnostics on laptop, but just can't boot up. Any other suggestion?

Try reseating the hard drive and checking ALL the connections.

Hard Drives are cheap. You can get one for under 100 nd install it yourself for nada. Just use the media they sent to you. Easy as pie. It is a bad drive though most likely. Go to newegg.com and snag one.

Yeah... I did not want the HD to die. Is there a way to pull some data (pictures) from the HD even though laptop won't boot up?

They keyboard is also rather cheap to pick from dell directly or ebay. The install is also painless. The 8600 line isnt perfect but far from the horror story you make it out to be. 1100, 5100, 5150, 5160 are just I few I can think of that should have never existed.
