Yep I'm using both the AR5004 and AR5006 in my Sager 9750. Got
the cards from this site:
http://www.netgate.com/product_info.php?products_id=279
and
http://www.netgate.com/product_info....roducts_id=109
with a Buffalo WHR-HR-G54 wireless router. I'm satisfied with the
signal strength and detection as I have a lot of trees between my
office and the house. That and I can get it to run on Windows XP,
Linux and OpenSolaris. I suppose I could have went MIMO but I just
didn't want to spend the bucks. I probably should have got that Aries2
wireless router on the www.netgate.com site. By the way there
is a second antenna connection when you open up the Sager for
dual anntenna mode.

Maybe having an Aries card in your computer already influenced your thinking, but at $140 that Aries2 looks pretty expensive considering it's somewhat dated. You can find better products for cheaper from Netgear, whom I have had good experiences from in the past.

Yeah but it least it's high power 108mbs. The Baffalo router is good
enough for now. At least it's got WPA and AES. My lantency is typically
1ms. I had a Netgear FVS318 a/b/g 108 wireless router firewall
and the signal was so poor I ripped it out. There are so many new
wireless technologies and it improves so fast you can get dizzy
from the choices. I think next wireless router I get I'm going to
make sure it has a mini-pci card in it and hopefully I can just
upgrade the mini-pci when newer technology comes out. Although
not a lot of wireless routers have the mini-pci in them. And the ones
that do if you want to modify the firmware and/or OS in the unit are
much more expensive. By the way you can get Atheros cards even
cheaper I've seen them in the 40 to 45 dollar range online. I just
mentioned netgate.com because they seem to be a good dealer.
It sure was an improvement over the ra2500 card that came in
the Sager. Though the 400mw card maybe a little overkill. http://www.notebookforums.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

I just bought the Atheros AR5006XS mini-pci card. 108mbs on Super A and Super G for 55.00 on ebay! Why even screw around with a slow intel card? After researching that Aries2 wireless access point, I found that it would theoretically blow away any "off-the-shelf" wireless device. It has almost triple the transmit power than all the other mainstream wiress devices. I am going to buy it and test it with the atheros card. Thanks for the referal, palowoda!

Just to add more info to the thread:

I bought one of those cheap internal wireless antennas on Ebay and installed on my 5720.
The preliminary results were:
1. I got a slightly better signal, and now it works in some places at the house where it would not find any signal before.
2. It works exactly the same way if I disconnect the built-in wireless antenna and leave just the new "extra" antenna
3. There are still problems with losing connection and lag, but at least it is good enough to surf the net (I don't dare to play online games on wireless...)
4. I noticed that the intel drivers (or the card, or whatever else I can't figure out) have some issues with DHCP. With dynamic IP address enabled, I was losing connection much more often than with a static address.

I'm pasting this post I made on another thread because it's relevant here:

My 5720 wireless works fine but it's not great. Recently I remembered that in my closet and stack of unused computer stuff I had a Microsoft brand USB Wireless-G device that I picked up for $15 last year and never used.

I installed the MS driver and plugged in the device. This stupid little $15 credit card sized device works much better than the Internal Intel card.

My suggestion if you don't want to swap out the internal wireless is just pick up one of these small USB wireless cards somewhere and use it instead. Several brands are available and they're pretty small. It's a little inconvenient I admit but it's a solution.

Sorry it took me so long to post this, but the Atheros AR5006-XS ROCKS!!!!
So does the Aries-2 wireless access point. I now have 108mbs all over my house. I play BF2 on wireless with absolutely zero lag. I'm always at 100pct signal strength, and I have a pretty big house. My card picks up wireless networks that didn't show up with the intel card. (but who cares, I have superA/G!) The difference is amazing. The card costs only $55.00. A must have for this wonderful notebook. So far, not 1 single interruption in service with this new wirless configuration. Not even a lag!

Windows VS. Software Wireless Utility

I don't think anyone's mentioned, but this symptom isn't unlike what I experienced when I had conflicts with Windows "built-in" wireless utility and the one supplied with my wireless card. Would hold a connection then when the conflict conflicted I would lose connection. Once resolved, wireless worked fine.

Oh, also had the internal wireless card go bad; they sent me another, I replaced it and has worked fine since. I will say, I've had the internal antennae become un-seated, and I opened it up, and re-seated it. Connection was fine then.
