Just curious as to who's looking forward to picking up one of these machines once they're released.

Eh if they offer a good coupon with it , and get it down to around 2000-2400? And it has a 7900 GTX or SLI . I will get it for a Desktop, and then use it to go to gamming partys.

no way

No way. It's a nice machine, but do need to carry it just about every day...

M1710 will be the dream machine for me.

What M2010 has that I envy:

* Big, low latency screen (of course)
* 8+1 speakers and a 7.1 HD audio card with DDLive & Dolby Headphone (possibly)
* More HD space (Raid 0?)

.... that's about it. Against it are:

* Too heavy and big to carry around.
* No 7900 card? At least not GTX?

I agree about 100% with that.

Low latency screen - sorry but 25ms laptop 17" screens are bottom of the barrrel in LCD tech these days. I'm going to miss my 12ms screen when I'm away from home.

I don't need the speakers, but the DDlive for headphone use (Dolby headphone sounds fantastic when well done) would have been nice.

The rumour mill that I read said that it would come with Raid 0 and dual HD's. That's a huge plus to me and would have possibly pushed me in the 2010 direction, but...

20.1 is too big. 19" and 10ms is out there and it's a better design. X1800 I will never touch, end of story, so the lack of a 7900 option (though who knows if it isn't an option yet) closes the door.

If we know more about the 2010 features when the M1710 shows up I might consider, but for now I'm headed totally in the 1710 direction. I really wanted Raid 0 and a low resp screen, but 19" and 7900 were needed to get me to consider the option further.

I truly believe they could bring dual HD's to a 19" model if they chose (see Samsung). I know most would say SLI is more important, but if you have an upgrade path for the GPU that isn't needed as much as dual HD's. HD's go up in performance much slower and raiding those would have helped performance a lot, especially where Vista is likely to have a larger footprint and driver spec. A G80 upgrade (single card) is quite likely to outperform dual 7900's in SLI, making the dual HD's again the smarter option.

Oh well. Can't get what they won't make. M1710 for me, unless I hear things like the 7900 option or more details on the 2010 that make me hesitate.

I agree, actually. My headphones (the Creative HQ2300D) do Dolby headphone - and it's amazingly better than stereo. But they require S/PDIF (otherwise they only do Dolby ProLogic II), so I've only watched DVDs, not played games with Dolby Headphone. They support both DD and DTS, btw. I can really recommend them!

Same boat as you. Now all I need is take deep breaths and yoga classes and wait for the M1710....come on Dell!

I am also leaning in favor of the M1710. I may eventually consider something along the lines of the M2010 but first I want a decked out M1710 with 7900 GTX.

I am a little disappointed, however, that it sounds like the M2010 will have a lesser GPU than the M1710. I would have thought they would want to have the very best graphics possible to show off their touted concept notebook.

As anemone has noted earlier, the M2010 is not primarily a gaming machine, but rather a media machine. As to why it couldn't have at least the option of a better card, I can't tell.

I'm just noting that laptops with the same kind of audience, such as the Toshiba Qosmio G30 (with HD-DVD included soon), also use lesser cards (in that case the Go 7600).

I sure hope Dell puts a 7900 in this thing, then it would be a beast!

With the SPDIF adapter for the Advanced HD Audigy sound in the 1710, you actually get 5.1 output (THX certified if rumour is correct). The difference between 7.1 and 5.1 is not as crucial for me.

The size of the 2010 is huge and the weight will correspond. An SLi solution MAY be available. BUT, unless they are thinking of a gaming variant, then the 1710 will probably outstrip it too.

As a gamer buying a mobile solution, I have to say the 1710 eclipses the 2010. However, I think the form factor is cool.

Only if the specs are on par or better than the 1710 and it is well constructed. To me, the whole purpose of having a bigger machine is to be able to pack in more power and goodies. If it's got all that it would make a great desktop replacement; no more cables and clutter. It's got the feng shui and wow factor!

By 2010, I expect a computer to be inplanted in my brain
post #15 of 17
not for me. i'd prefer to get an m1710. It has just about everything you need for gaming and eats most desktops up for breakfast.

I think the X1800 was probably done for the better video quality ATI is known for. Remembering of course that the 2010 was designed as a Win MCE type of machine that had portable as a secondary option.

Think of it as a machine you'd take with you camping or something, where it would be the movie watching machine, the check email, and general stuff machine in a camper and not far from a plug kind of thing. That's reaching but the point is to think of this as a portable media machine and ATI does have slightly better video quality. Again I wouldn't go this fancy without the 7900 as video but the intended audience of this machine is likely to love the ATI option.
