which one do i sell? dell or gateway?

well, i am tired of buying and selling/returning laptops and now i have two, needing to get rid of one. i have a dell XPS M140 and a gateway MX6421. i honestly don't know which one i want to sell yet. here's the pros and cons.

gateway MX6421:
pros: great looking screen, 15.4" screen.
cons: HOT ac adapter, fan is always on, sluggish performance.

dell XPS M140:
pros: design (yes, i actually like it), battery life! speedy little machine.
cons: screen seems washed out, color-wise, HOT ad adapter, warm touchpad area.

i know these are nitpicky things, but $800 is no small chuck of change and i want things to be near-perfect. heck, i might try something else in 6 mos. after the remaining one gets paid off.

any thoughts? they both cost about $800 and one needs to go. any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sell the Gateway

Hello!

Judging from your own list of pros and cons, Calliso9, it sounds like you should keep the Dell XPS M140. I suspect its "washed out" screen will bother you far less than the constant fan noise and generally poor performance of the Gateway MX6421.

I strongly prefer Dell over Gateway because their notebook computers are, in my experience, better supported and far more reliable.

Just my 0.02.

i concur, too! so, who wants to buy a gateway?

I owned a Gateway desktop, and it was horrendous. The components were very lacking in quality. It only lasted 3 years, then the motherboard and HD failed.

And then I look at those Gateways with the cracks in the screen hinges...

So yeah, keep the Dell.

I bought the Gateway MX6421 for my grandparents and thought it was a pretty nice machine. I didn't test it much, but it seemed to run nice and fast. Maybe something is wrong with it if the fan is constantly running, as this one was nice and quiet. I actually liked it alot and if it had an actual graphics card I would have considered getting one myself. Either way, it sounds like you're more attached to the XPS so I'd keep that one.

edit: Oh, and as far as Gateway's sucking, they have actually really worked hard to get their quality up over the last 2 years or so. I've found that most of their new systems are very well built and are pretty nicely priced(at least comparing without coupons). Our school district has been buying alot of them lately and they have not only been the cheapest in the bid but they're handling the workload pretty nicely. If you wrote off Gateway from a bad experience a few years ago I'd take a look at them now. They've really turned themselves around and are offering very high quality products now.

well, the HD crashed in the dell last night!

as for the specs on each machine, they are about the same. the dell has a slightly better processor (i think), the dell has a faster RPM hard drive, screen is smaller on the dell (14").

overall, the dell just performs better. well, except for that whole hard drive crashing thing.

Reliability of Gateway Laptops

To Camride:

I'm pleased to hear that you've had positive experiences with Gateway laptops. Unfortunately, Consumer Reports shows that they are statistically much more prone to severe problems than any other major brand (Consumer Reports - Buying Guide 2005). Personal experience and a wealth of anecdotal data generally support their findings.

For the curious, Consumer Reports rankings, from most to least reliable, were: Apple, Toshiba, Sony, IBM, Hewlett Packard, Dell, Compaq, and Gateway.

True, keeping oneself open is always good, but I found myself one sweet laptop for a great price, which as been 100% solid, so I'm inclined to check Dell out first. But yeah, I noticed Gateway trying to do something new. They even ditched the old logo, with its negative connotations of cheap quality and no name memory, motherboards, disc drives and power supplies.
