Will they run counter-strike 1.6 or source (lowest settings). Looking at a laptop for uni next year and i'm stuck between getting a more portable one with integrated or a larger one with say an x700.
I'm on a low budget too

help!

Best one so far I think is not such a portable one but it is the amilo a1667g
2.26ghz athlon 64
1gb ram
x700 128mb

thanks, Michael

well ...

i play CS @ 800x600 and FPS is locked at 60
if i play @ 1024x768, FPS is locked at 30

obviously, a x700 would blow it away. my thinkpad pwns that game.

My Intel 915GM can play Quake 3 and Jedi Knight 2 comfortably at 1024x768 @ high detail. Not sure on Source engine games.

X700 is a pretty decent graphics card and you'll be able to play most games with it. Depends how much of a gamer you are I suppose. If its just the occasional older FPS (ie Quake 3 engine) then go for integrated. Perhaps you can try and find a Radeon 200 IGP, they are the top end of the Integrated graphics scene.

A lot of the integrated graphics cards don't work on the newer games, like Call of Duty 2. Just be careful! You can probably get a decent "dedicated" card at Dell for fairly cheap. What's your budget?

well the fujisu-siemens i mentioned was £880 (around $1000 i think) I love oblivion but i'm willing not to play that at uni and wait till holidays to play it on my desktop Would be nice to play either counter-strike with mates back home on the lappy though. So not extreme gaming, but capable of running games such as football manager (more RAM and processing based game) soldat which will run fine without it and maybe cs.

Where is that Amilo from mjpzx2? I'm from UK and have spent the past week looking for a new notebook, I might be able to help you find one in the price range.

Well I found it on www.dabs.com first but a good £30 cheaper on www.savastore.com

Type it in there and it will pop up. Also on dabs there is the amilo a3667 which is about £780 (cant remember exact price) and has a turion 1.8ghz

£744 here, laptopsdirect.co.uk

http://www.acernotebooks.co.uk/Acer_.../version-1.asp

Acer 1652zwlmi - £700
Pentium M 1.7ghz
1 gig of memory
100GB HDD
X1300 graphics

X1300 graphics not as good as X700, but should still let you play most games. Possibly Oblivion as well (just don't expect high res and detail settings)

ah cool, that amilo 1667g is a toned down version of the one i saw I think.

This machine might interest you since you're off to uni.

Acer 5512wlmi - £770
Pentium M 1.73ghz
1gig of memory
80gb hdd
X700 graphics

And it has a built in tv tuner (analogue and digital) Come with little portable ariel and remote control. Might be handy for afternoon viewings of Countdown, Murder She Wrote, Columbo, Neighbours etc...

No worries, I'm in the process of buying a new laptop at the moment, so I've spent the past several days browsing, browsing and then browsing some more at all the different models out there in my price range. Think I've settled on the 1652zwlmi though.

Oh, one more I forgot to link to,
http://www.acernotebooks.co.uk/Acer_.../version-1.asp

Acer 3023wlmi - £640
Sempron 3000
512mb memory
80gig hdd
x700 graphics

That's the cheapest notebook i've seen with x700 graphics, so if its graphics that are your number 1 priority that's your cheapest option.

Saw a laptop which looked nice as it was just 12.1" widescreen. But the graphics is 128mb x300. Could someone explain this. Is it integrated or dedicated. It also has a little asterix and an explanation which doesn't make sense to me ^^

How does it compare to an x700?

Here is the context it is in.

EDIT: does anyone know of a 12.1" with decent graphics in, or is the technology just not small enough yet? (assuming the x300 isnt decent graphics )
X300 isn't that bad of a graphics card. At least, its better than the Intel IGP, but its the bottom end of the dedicated graphics cards.

A laptop that small is unlikely to have a decent graphics option (ie X600, X700 ) X300 is probably the highend that a 12" laptop would have.

Good price though for what it is.

Thanks for that. Reckon it could handle Counter strike source?
I don't see why not, Source engine is pretty scalable. You'll have to keep it on low detail though. I'll try and find some benchmarks of the card

Can't find anything with CS:S, but here is a benchmark of several laptops with different raphics cards. Its in Russian, but the pictures are at least easy to understand! Look for the LGLS55-1555, that has a 64MB X300 card, and will give you some idea of performance
