It'll be compatible, yes. A lowly TNT card is DX10-compatible, just not DX10-native. The G71M is DX9.0c-native.

Loosely translated - whereas you needed a DX9.0c card to fully enjoy certain games, you'll need the same to fully enjoy DX10 games, such as the oft-mentioned-of-late Crysis game.

That's probably the STAC9200 2 channel HD audio card that's currently in the 9400 as well. Oh well... better than AC97 in any case!

Now this is something!!! There is no such thing currently... "Integrated" means on-board to me. That would be awesome if you had that option!

Especially true since the Audigy 2 zs Notebook is PCMCIA-based, and will not work with the M1710.

Really looking forward to the release!

I prefer the m90 cover, do you think you will be able to change this cover to the m90, and also game companies has to make money, and that means selling to the masses, I dont think they will bring out crazy graphics with dx/10 because who will be able to afford to buy a new system in the last year/2years and then another at the end of the year.

I am just waiting to see what happens with the price on this m1710 and then ill decide which one to go for, but I have the idea that dell is gonna make it crazy pricy, and it wont be worth it.

That looks like an express card slot only with no pcmcia That annoys me as my evdo card is pcmcia w/o an express card option atm.

Ok on the looks department: crummin silver! You can never have too much black. Black and red for the extreme version would have been perfect. Do you see a red Ferrari with a silver interior? NO. Old 170 definitely has better looks department and the owners are smiling right now I know it.

Merom is pin compatible with Yonah. It has already been done (dropping a Merom into a Yonah notebook). Check the boards for more info.

G80 is highly likely to drop into this heat and power factor, hence compatible with this notebook if Dell builds the card. The mobile chips carry a premium price and even Dell wouldn't mind selling a ton of those. Is it guaranteed? Nope. It is very likely to be capable of taking a DX10 capable GPU. Please note that it's actually WGF 2.x not really DX10. DX10 is just the public reference, not MS. WGF 1.0 is the current Vista layout and is based on DX9, and thus references to current Vista running just fine are incomplete. Also, most folks are just testing the Aero interface, not a fully running game on Vista. We all know running the interface isn't nearly as hard as a full Vista based game. Anyway, for WGF 2/DX10, the G80 will be there and is very likely to drop into the 1710. It is less likely, but still possible to drop into the 170. Have to see on that.

Again, it should have been all black with the red cover, or basically minimal silver. I'd bet if the 170 had come as entirely black no one would have complained.

Built in Audigy 2 would make sense for the extreme version and it's about time! I agree 100% that then we can use the Expresscard slot for Esata and get the "when at home get a full speed hardrive" experience. Alternatively they could have used Dolby Master suite, or even better dropped in Xifi, which has NO expresscard or USB equivalent. Creative would have sold tons of chips and Dell would have cleaned house, as well as having a notebook no one else could match. Oh well.

There is an extreme version and a normal version. Be careful in that what you see in different drivers and hardware are going to refer to two different machines.

I can't wait to see how many shops are going to open up signs saying they'll paint that ugly silver 1710 black for you and save your pain. Painted black, however is not going to be the same as if it had come black framed to begin with. Clearly this silver loving designer hasn't visited many gamers forums. Black black black black

sigh

Still probably have to get this if they do the Audigy 2 internal thing as well as the Yonah and G71. Honestly if they wanted to sell a ton of them, they'd offer a coupon to switch out the top parts to black based vs silver when the parts came in. Heck I'd even pay $50 to have that option.

The developer for DX10 said that it will be a 40% increase in performance (40% or so. I watched the video a couple weeks ago.) He said that even a 10% increase would be awesome.

There is much more then that. Its totaly different and isnt backwards compatible with DX9.

"DirectX 10 will increase game performance by as much as six to eight times"

Exactly. And thus being able to upgrade to a DX10 gpu is a BIG deal.

nah dont worry you will still have Dx9 installed on your machine.
You'll just have 2 version of DirectX on your computer.

Just got off the phone with an XPS rep. Initially he told me he could loose his job if he told me anything, but after telling him that the drivers were uploaded on their site already and the tons of rumors that are flying around the net he started giving me some info. All the info he gave me was pretty much everything we alrady know:

On board Audigy soundcard with AdvancedHD support
7900GTX 512mb
Core Cuo
ExpressCard

and so on. Then I asked about release date. I don't know if he was just trying to goat me but he said that as far as he knows it is not going to be released till June at the earliest. He also couldn't give me a price point, but said that a decently config'd model should run about $2700.

Just got the latest issue of Computer Gaming World (May issue) and it shows a nice 2 page spread of these new models. One Red and one black. It looks like both keyboards are grey and one interesting thing is the track pad seems to have a lit XPS symbol on it. The advert doesn't give specs but says it starts at $2399
post #116 of 209
Onboard audigy prolly on the upscale red model if there is also a HD97 driver out there. Audigy prolly means Audigy2, leaving the Xifi for the Expresscard port "someday".

Other stuff is normal defacto items but good going on the Audigy
post #117 of 209
Black is the basic, red is the souped up one
post #118 of 209
