*OFFICIAL*: Dell XPS M1710 *Pictures*! *RELEASED TOMORROW!* - Page 5

It's been said before but it just looks like a crappy 9300 (no offence 9300 owners!). They shoulda kept with the black and silver colourscheme or changed the colours from the 9400, it's supposed to be Dell's top of the line machine - and considerably different to their lower end laptops.

I would very much like a black or red backcover though, never liked the silver one I've got on my XPS.

These are my two cents, in the mean time, I'm happy with my i9300.
1. No
2. No

1 - Not a feasible thing to upgrade a 2/3 year old laptop just via cpu when there is newer architecture out/will be coming that would make more use of the system.

Same goes for the graphics cards. DX10 cards I beleive will not come out until the realease of Vista. Sometime around that period is when you will start seeing DX10 cards. Its much more profitable right now to keep making DX9 cards and milking the market for all it's worth. Wouldn't you agree?

The XPS logos on the lid of the laptop are clear plastic that have 3 clear leds each per logo (6 total). Each led is capable of displaying a certain color palatte. That of which we have seen.

The kicker? If dell was SMART - they would drop the xps logos (either keep them or make them unlighted) and use the same plastic for the metal part, but clear with LEDS on each end. So, as the system is controlled, the entire silver area (would be clear now) would light up whatever color you set in the quickset.

Would it be hard to do? Nope. Not at all. All the electronics are there already. They just need to add the clear backing that would allow the color change leds to light it up!

Then again, dell isn't smart.

Hmm.. I might try this with my insert whenever it comes. I got a spare cover panel here with the led boards. Might give it a whirl

Will be interesting to see what this new one will cost. And as tman2093 just mentioned, the "old" M170 seems to "look" nicer? But, they fixed one thing that really bothered me about the 9300/M170, and that is, they have no real docking port. Glad to see they finally fixed that omission. Wish my new M170 coming my way soon would have had a dock port. D'oh!

DX10 doesn't include any kick ass new features like you guys are anticipating, at least in the terms of graphics card abilities.

The programming model is different but it's not like DX10 has Shaders v5 or whatever.

Remember Microsoft is anticipating that GMA950s will be capable of running Aero with glass.

Considering that the metal part of the LCD backcover seems exactly the same size as the one on the XPS2/m170s, i think we're gonna see some crazy 1710 cover swapping.

I like the XPS 2 design better too, this one sucks.

You can't swap just the metal/silver part. You would have to swap the entire top cover. The metal part is non removeable, and is part of the cover.

Hold up until you see it in person. It might fresh and clean in design, but the pics might not do it justice. Wait up, before you judge.

While I concur with the people saying "DX10 won't offer much over DX9.0c," I'm not so much concerned with that as I am that the G80 should very well be HDCP-equipped.

...call me paranoid, but that WILL end up biting people in the ass eventually.

People saying DirectX 10 won't offer much over DX9 are kidding themselves. Just watch Crysis tech video. I think buying a new video card with DX10 in the horizon is a waste.

XPS/Inspiron M1710

Audio Drivers

Creative Labs Integrated Audigy invitation
Creative Labs Integrated Sound Blaster Audigy ADVANCED HD Audio

Hmmm, interesting (there maybe no need for an audigy expansion card )

Good - something to look forward to with the 1720 or something down the road with Merom.

ExpressCard eSATA in place of the Audigy 2 ZS...hopefully by then, though - eSATA will be standard.

Do you think the student discount will work for such a new model(when it's released..). I've been holding off on a new laptop for school, and I think i'll probably get the m1710. Merom and DX10 sound tempting, but I can't really wait until... what, the fall? I need to have fun during the summer
post #99 of 209
Probably later than the Fall. Merom will be out before the G8xM boards, most likely, though.
so the M1710 will not be compatible with dx10!?
