my question is, do you think the m1710 will have a better battery saver function then the m170? i know most duo core processor notebooks do, and also, do you think that for the price, around 2500, ill be able to get the same performance out of the m1710, as i would my m170
post #2 of 31
the graphics card will perform better....and the core duo is better for multi tasking....but the higher clocked dothan-pentium ms will perform better gaming wise. its up to you. personally i would rather have the newer model m1710. good luck

If you're willing to spend that much might as well go for the M1710.

I would just keep that one... i mean- thats a fantastic computer- duo or no duo.... i love my P-M the way it is. Plus... I absolutely hate the looks of the XPS M1710 :-/ looks like a 9300 type paint job

Does it cost money to cancel an order?

it just seems, after talking to a few people that, dual core processors are taking over and pretty soon, i wont be able to play up to date games on my lappy.

How long do you plan on keeping it?

at least 5 years, hopefully more!

5 years for a gaming laptop is unrealistic. Games progress too fast. In a year you'll want to run Vista 64 bit and the reality is that none of the M170 or M1710 will be able to unless we can upgrade the bios on the m1710 by then but that's a big if. you'll still be able to run XP or Vista 32 bit though.

Will the M1710 last longer than then m170? Probably but not by a lot....and the only game you'll be able to play on both of these laptops in 5 years is solitaire....

it just seems like to get a dual core xps that would out perform the m170 that i built, it would cost a great deal more. whats your thoughts on that?
get the dual core, no question imo. I would NEVER buy a new pc that is not dual core.

To get the top duo core and the same config you are looking at +$500 what you are paying now...if not $1000 more. It will depend on the parts available and the pricing on it. We'll know more when it comes out which is probably a question of hours.....I suggest you wait and see.

That's what I'm doing

If the prices are nuts, I'm getting a M170 for cheap. In 1 or 1.5 years I sell it and buy the next generation of XPS with 64 bit duo core, vista and all the trimmings.

If the prices are not too bad I'm going M1710.

totally agree!!..

"Special Edition Formula Red Notebook starting at $3100"

Get the m170. Either way you slice it, your coming in at the later part of the laptop changover. Save your money and get a nice @ss laptop and put your saved green away for a vista laptop/new xps line of laptops.

m1710 is over rated

I just bought one for $1500 on the outlet site and I am feeling good!

just to answer your question and this is a desktop granted, not a notebook, but it will give you an idea. At the time this was the top dimension you could get at dell (I think it was during a non xps period...at least I dont' remember there being any at that time)

Dimension 8100
Pentium 4 1.7ghz
Geforce 3 64mb (the TI's weren't released till a couple of month's later)
1gb rdram (I've since added 512, I started out with 512)
Windows Me
40Gb hard drive
usb1.1 (4 ports)
10/100 integrated NIC
56k modem
DVD/CD-rw combo drive (man I was so psyched that you could have a dvd drive and a cd burner in the same drive!!!!. Of course now adays that is the status quo)
mouse (ball type, no opticals at that time)

Well, you asked for it....I gave it to you... I"m sure there are people with more advanced systems at the time, but that was "Dell's" flagship in July 2001 (ok..not quite 5 years, but close)

And yes, I think a "gaming" machine will not last 5 years and stay up to date, however, a computer can easily last 5 years and still be usefull Since he's getting the XPS though i'll assume it's for gaming and everyone is right, 5 years is way unrealistic......a year is getting unrealistic nowadays....LOL

I would go m170 if you can still get some of the killer deals that were out. Sounds like they may be gone.

Either way, in 2 years or less you will want to be upgrading. 2 year old systems are having trouble with Oblivion and there are lots more new things coming in the computer world in the next 2 years than there were in the past 2. Recent technologies that the laptop does not support 64--bit and SLI will also gain traction with developers.

Oh and SubTeeFuge, please change that silly picture. A nice lady here at worked just walked by while I was writing this and it was not the best experience of my life. Please...
