Does anyone know which manufactuer and model of DVD writer Dell puts in the D620? At $139 upgrade, it may be better to buy from Newegg or similar seller than pay to Dell. However, I could not find specifics on Dell's website so don't know whic models would fit.

The problem you're going to run into buying a third party DVD writer for the D620 is that the faceplate WILL NOT match up.....in fact, you'll have to butcher the faceplate of your new drive to accomodate the little DBay pull tab and by butcher I mean you'll have to notch the lower right corner of the new drive's face. I've contemplated buying the cheapest DBay Optical drive I can off eBay and using the housing and everything so I don't have to tear up the one that I got with the machine.

If dell uses the same drives as the Inspiron E1505, then its going to be a samsung TS-L532, of which I have one for sale for $55 shipped (its brand new) it came with my E1505 and I am switiching it out with another model I prefer...

PM if you want it..

Since the D620 is smaller than the E1505, I'm concerned if the drive is the same size. Mr. Evil's idea of a d-bay drive sounds like it will fit better. I assume the available D-bay drives from the D-610 will fit the D-620...

Actually, the Latitudes DO NOT use the same Optical drive as the Inspirons. Their drives are in a module called a DBay module. Basically the drive is a standard notebook drive encased in Dell's special cartridge. You CAN remove the special cartridge from the drive and install a new one. HOWEVER the problem you face is that the DBay drive faces are a good 1/4" thicker than a standard drive faceplate. Also, DBay drives have that little pull tab so you can swap the drive in favor of the secondary battery on the fly. I'll probably get me the cheapest one I can on eBay and see how I can mod it. I'll probably order a D820 with a DVD ROM standard and use my USB 2.0 external DVDRW drive until I can get one for the DBay.

I had an inspiron 600m that I replaced the drive on. Fitting the D-bay case takes about 10 minutes at most.

Yes, you can replace your drive with a new one and you dont have to worry about it matching up. There are 8 screws to remove the old drive from the bay it sits in, you pop the current bezel off (3 clips) and put it on the new drive, put the new drive in bay and pop it in. It took me all of 12 minutes and you cant tell a difference.

I ordered this one, and it works perfect

Saved $70 over the dell upgrade

To answer the original question, the 8x DVD-RW drive that is in my D620 now is identified in device manager as: SONY DVD+-RW DW-Q58A.
